Description
c. E. cusBEE, CASH SALES BOOK.
APPLICATION FILED JULY I7, 1909.
car sra'rns inn one CLARENCE E. CLISBEE, 0F REVERE, MASSACHUSETTS.
CASH-SALES BOOK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARENCE E. Cnrsnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Revere, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Cash-Sales Books, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to cash sales books such as are used by salesmen in stores for keeping the record of the various sales of goods and the amount of the sale.
One type of cash sales book which is now more or less commonly used has each leaf formed with a series of detachable sections,
each having a space to receive the amount of the sale and a similar series of spaces formed on a non-detachable portion of the leaf where the amount of the sale is re corded, and still another space or series of spaces on a non-detachable portion of the page or sheet where the amount received is recorded.
It frequently happens that when a .dishonest salesman makes a sale and receives therefor the exact change, he will enter on the sales book an amount less than the full amount of the sale and will retain in his possession the difference between the amount entered and the true amount of the sale, sending up to the cashier with the detachable section only that portion of the cash received which is entered on the book.
My invention has for its object to provide a novel sales book by means of which any such dishonest transactions on the part of the salesman can be more readily detected than is possible with the sales book now generally in use. v
In accordance with my invention I pro vide an arrangement or form of book which permits a salesman to make a permanent record of not only the amount of each sale, but also the time when the sale was made. I
Referring to the drawings wherein I have shown some embodiments of my invention,
Figure 1 is a general view of a cash sales book made in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of two adjacent pages thereof; Fig. 3 shows a modification.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ruled and imprinted to form designated spaces for receiving the amounts of the dif ferent sales, so that when the book is opened at any point the left-hand page will be blank, while the right-hand page will be imprinted'as above stated. The page is made with a plurality of detachable sections 3 capable of being separated along the dotted lines 4, and to secure'this end the page may be perforated or scored along Patented Mar. 7, 1916.
Application filed July 17, 1909. Serial No. 508,205. r I
these lines, or otherwise treated to make the separation easy. These spaces 3 are in tended to have recorded thereon the amounts of the various sales and when a sale is made, one of the sections 3 with the amount of the sale recorded thereon will be detached from the book and will be sent to the cashier with the money. In addition to the spaces 3 the page is provided with additional spaces 5, each of which is imprinted to designate a certain period of time.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2 I I each space 5 is arranged to indicate a fifteenminute period and there are four such spaces, each one indicating a quarter of an hour. It will be within my invention, however, to make these spaces indicate ten minute periods, in which case I should preferably have six of them, or they might indicate half-hour periods, in which case, it would be only necessary to have two, or they might be arranged to indicate any desired interval of time. In the embodiment herein shown the spaces 5 are designated 1st quarter, 2d quarter, 3d quarter, 4th quarter, to
indicate the different quarter hour periods. In using the above-described sales book, let it be assumed that some time during the period between three oclock. and quarter past three a salesman makes a sale of and receives from the customer a one dollar bill. He will enter 85 on the space 3, as shown in dotted lines; will enter the amount 85 3, in the space 5' designated 1st quarter; will enter the amount received from the customer, $1.00, on the opposite page 8, and in connection with this $1.00 will write the numeral 3 to indicate the hour when the sale was made. The-detachable section 3 will then be torn ofl' and sent up to the cashier with the money. 7 If during the period between quarter and half, past three the salesman makes another sale amounting to $1.75 and receives $2.00 from the customer, he will enter the amount of the sale on the section 3, will also enter it in the section 5 imprinted 2d quarter, and will enter the amount of the money received, $2.00 on the page 8, and write in connection with it the numeral 3 to indicate the hour when the sale was made.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a different form of my invention wherein the method of in dicating the time of the sale is slightly different from that shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In Fig. 3, the leaf has the detachable sections 3 on which the amount of the sale is to be entered, and if desired these detachable sections may also be imprinted or divided in such a way that the amount received may also be entered there. The leaf also has other spaces 10 similar to the spaces 3 but forming a permanent part of the leaf, and these spaces 10 may be divided or imprinted to receive both the amount of the sale and the amount received. The leaf is also provided with other spaces imprinted to designate the hours and minutes, for instance, at 11 is a space in which the numerals 1 to 12 are placed and which indicate the hours of the day, and at 12 is a space in which different periods of time are indicated by minutes. As shown the numerals 10, 20, 30, t0 and 50 appear indicating tenminute periods. The leaf may also be provided with other spaces 13 arranged to receive the amount of the sale. In using this book whenever the salesman makes a sale, he enters in the spaces 8 and 10 the amount of the sale and also if desired the amount received, and the amount of the sale will also be entered in the space 13. The salesman will then draw a mark through the numeral in space 11 indicating the hour when the sale was made, and another mark through the numeral in the space 12 which will indicate approximately the minute when the sale was made. For instance, if the sale was made at 2.05 p. m., the salesman would mark through the numeral 2 in the space 11 and through the numeral 10 in space 12, thus indicating that the sale was made somewhere between two and ten minutes past two. This embodiment secures the same result as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, although by a slightly different arrangement.
In this Way by means of this invention a permanent record is kept not only of the amounts of the sales and the amounts received, but also the time when each sale is made.
In detecting a dishonest salesman, it is customary for the proprietor to send an accomplice into the store at certain times and direct him to make a purchase of a certain salesman and give the exact amount in change. WVhen the accomplice makes this purchase or purchases he notes the time of each, and at the end of the day, the book of the salesman can be looked over to see if it contains entries at the time when the purchase was made by the accomplice corresponding to the sales made to the accomplice, and if there is any discrepancy, the proprietor knows the salesman has been dishonest.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A cash sales book comprising similar leaves, each having on its outer edge a row of consecutively-numbered detachable sections extending from the top to the bottom of the leaf, each leaf also having back of said sections a plurality of time-indicating columns extending from the top to the bottom thereof and imprinted to designate different parts of an hour and numbers corresponding to and situated opposite the numbers on the detachable sections, the remainder of the leaf being blank whereby whenever a sale is made a salesman may mark the amount of the sale on one of the detachable sections and may enter the amount received from the customer in the blank space opposite said section, and may also enter the amount of the sale in the proper time-indicating column opposite said detachable section.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
