Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 15, 1913. Serial No. 795,337.
To all 'whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that we, GEORGE OL'IvnR and loHN T. Boon, citizens of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Combination Spray-Torches and Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
@ur invention relates to a novel foundry appliance and has for its object to provide an appliance having a wide field of usefulness in a foundry, it being adapted to be used as a torch for drying the cores and molds; as a suction cleaner to withdraw the sand from intricate molds or castings; and as a blower to apply lamp-black or other coating or facing material to the cores, pattit? terns or molds.
Our invention comprises a device having a plurality of lngitudinal passages in a flattened handle portion, which passages all convergeinto a common discharge nozzle which is adapted to receive a detachable combustion chamber when used as a torch.
@ur invention further comprises the novel arrangement of the passages in the handle and the provision of separate valves therefor and particularly in the arrangement of the valve for the fuel inlet passage. Accord ing to our preferred arrangement the three passages are superposed and the central passage disposed in line with the discharge nozzle, is connected with the air pressure supply. @ne of the other passages is adapted for' the admission of air when the device is used as a torch, or sand when used as a cleaner, or liquid when used as a spray, and the third passage serves as a fuel inlet and is opened by a valve arranged so as to prevent the accumulation of sand or other matter in the discharge neck of the fuel inlet passage.
A further object of our invention is the improvement of the detachable combustion chamber which consists in providing the lat Ater with a neck adapted to fit over the charge nozzle of the handle portion and in providing at the forward end of the chainN ber a lamp and wiclr so disposed as to main tain the jet constantly ignited.
Uur invention further comprises the cle-- ytails of construction and arrangement of parts which are hereinafter more particularly described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which lligure l is a vertical longitudinal sec tion through the appliance when in use as a torch. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line -m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the appliance in use as a sand cleaner. Fig. 4t is a similar view of the appliance in use as a spray.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
The appliance in its preferred embodiment comprises an integral handle portion l comprising a perforated lug or ear 2 and three longitudinal passages 8, 4 and 5, respectively, which passages open through the rear end of the handle portion and have the threads tapped in their open ends. rlhe pas sage 3 is provided at an intermediate point with. a valve 6 and the middle passage 4- is likewise provided with a similar valve 7, which valves are controlled by stems pro jecting from the side of the appliance, as seen in lFig. f2. At its front end the appliance is provided with a discharge nozzle 8 into which all of the passages converge, the passage 3 having an inclined port 9 leading into the nozzle, the middle passage having a contracted port 10 opening in line with the center line of the discharge nozzle il, and the passage 5 having an up turned port ll disposed at right angles to the passage and opening into the nozzle 8 opposite the port 9. A. vertically adjustable conical valve l2 is suitably packed and is threaded through a boss 13 at the forward end of the handle portion, having a knurled lrnoblll by means of which it may be adjusted vertically to open or close the tapered valve seat formed by the port ll.
The nozzle 8 is enteriorly tapered .and adapted to receive a detachable frnsto coni cal shell forming a combustion chamber l5 having a flaring neck portion 1G which will malte a tight ht over the nozzle t3. chamber is preferably in the shape of a frustum having a large number` of ports at its larger inlet end and provided at its contracted outlet end with a lamp chamber l@ which depends from and is cast integral with the chamber and projects beyond it, having preferably a curved bottom and an open top 19 which stands in line with the bottom edge of the open end of the chamber 15. t wick 20 in the lamp maintains a The 1 Ill@ constant iame at the end of the torch to prevent it going out while in use.
A suitable source of compressed air, such as the tank 2l, has a leXiblehose pipe 22 connected thereto which has at its end a threaded nipple 23 adapted to be screwed into the threaded inlet end of thepassage 4. When used as .a torch, a fuel supply tanlr, such as 24, is employed having a flexible pipe 25 and nipple for engagement in the inlet end of the passage 5. In use as a torch the valve 6 is closed, the combustion chamber is fitted in place on the appliance and the wick 20 lighted, after which the valves Tand l2 are opened .and the air and fuel mix and are discharged through the nozzle 8 into the combustion chamber l5 in which they are vaporized. rlhe burning wick ignites the gases as they dow from the discharge end of the combustion chamber.
When the appliance is used as a sand cleaner, a hose 26 is connected by .a nipple 27 to the rear end of passage 3 and the end of the hose 26 is inserted in the casting or mold which it is desired to clean by suction. The combustion chamber 15 is removed, the valve l2 closed, and the valves 6 and 7 opened, whereupon the ejector action of the jet of air passing through port l() will create a suction in the passage 3 .and pipe 26 to accomplish the ends in View. When used as a spray, the hose 26 is introduced into a vessel or container 28, which contains the substance to be sprayed and the action of the jet of air is the same as that just described in connection with the device used as a cleaner.
lt is desirable to have separate passages for the fuel and for the material sprayed and to arrange these passages on opposite sides of the air passage to give a dat handle portion which can be easily gripped and held in one hand when the tool is in use.
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
.ln combination, Va device having a nipple and means for supplying fuel and other material to the nipple, a frusto-conical perforated shell orming a combustion chamber and having a sleeve detachably secured to the nipple, the outer end of the shell being open and being the smaller end thereof, and a wick cup secured externally to the outer end of the shell and projecting beyond said shell.
ln testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
