WILLIAM BRISTOL, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR T0 THE BRISTOL CCMPANY, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION 0F CONNECTICUT.
INSTRUMENT-CASING.
insana.
To all whom it may concern:
le it known that l, WILLiAM H. Brrsfron, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful improvements in lnstrument-CaSings, of Which the following is a speciiication.
The invention relates to improvements in casings for measuring instruments or gages, and more particularly to the cover er lid which is adapted to seal the interior thereof against the entrance of dust, moisture or other foreign material.
lt has for its object to provide, of sheet metal of suitable thickness, a lid or cover for a casing; and which lid, though comparatively light, shall be su'liiciently durable and reinforced to sustain the glass plate as well as to ailord ample material for attachment of a hinge. A saving of material is effected in the improved construction and a lighter weight cover produced, whereby stress on the hinge is reduced to a minimum.
A further object of the invention is to afford means to retain suitable packing to render the casing dust and moistureproof- The nature of the invention will be best understood when described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in vvhich v Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pressure gage provided with the improved casing cover. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section there-- through, the gage mechanism being omitted.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates a casing of suitable material and is shown cylindrical in form, said casing being adapted to retain the measuring apparatus 11 as is well understood. Apparatus thus mounted in a casing is usually of a sensitive nature and requires protection from dust, moisture and` other foreign materials; and for this purpose, there is generally hingedly conn^cted to the casing a cover or lid such as the cover 12 herein shown, and which retains a glass front or plate 13. Heretofore, these covers were constructed of suitable castings which necessarily rendered them heavy and which, moreover, required considerable ma` chine Work thereon to provide the necessary holdingr members and the desired nish.,

It is the object of the present invention to provide a cover which may be rapidly and cheaply formed out of sheet metal; and for this purpose, the same is constructed of two parts-an outer ring 14 and an inner ring 15. -The outer ring 14 is shaped to suit, having preferably an upper overhanging or outwardly flaring rim 16 of the doubled over portion of the material and an outer wall 17 extending inwardly toward and adapted to tit over the edge of the casing 10. The inner wall 18 of said ring extends over the plate 13 with which it contacts, being turned slightly toward the casing. The inner ring 15 is channel shaped and is fitted Within the outer ring, being secured thereto by soldering at a number of points. The outer wall 19 of the ring 15 extends inwardly toward the easing 10 following the wall 17 for a portion of its length and is then turned away from the same to provide a groove 20 adapted toretain suitable packing 21 resting, when the cover is closed, upon the edge of the casing to securely seal said casing against the entrance of dust, moisture and other foreign material. The other wall orlip 22 of said inner ring aords an abutment for the glass plate 13 which is held in the cover by a suitable cement 23 and by iiexible clips 2li which latter may be attached to the bottom of the channel shaped ring 15 and extend under the glass to hold the same. The walls 17 and 19 at their contacting portions provide, moreover, sufficient material for the attachment for one leaf of a hinge 25, the other leaf of which is attached to the casing 10.
I claim 1. The combination with a cylindricalcasing; of a cover therefor comprising an outer channel shaped ring and an inner channel shaped ring of sheet metal iitting therein and suitably secured thereto, the outer sides thereof being separated at their edges to provide a packing groove to retain suitable packing adapted to cooperate with the edge of said casing; and a plate held by said rings.
2. The combination with a cylindrical casing; of a cover therefor comprising an outer channel shaped ring and an inner channel shaped ring of sheet metal, fitting therein and suitably secured thereto and the outer sides thereof being separated at their edges to provide a packing groove to retain suitable packing adapted to cooperate with the edge of said easing; a plate held by said rings; and a hinge, one leaf of `which is*V secured to the walls of both the said rings and the other to said Casing, whereby the.
outer ring and olfset therefrom at its edge said cover is hingedly connected thereto.
3. The combination with a cylindrical easl ing; of a cover therefor comprising an outer ring and an inner ring of sheet metal, the; former being doubled upon itself for a portion and flaring outwardly to provide a suitable rim for `the cover and one wall thereof extending over the easing and the other toward the easing and adapted to ii-t over ythe same, and the said inner ring `haying a wall extending toward said casing following` the similar wall of said outer `ring and offset therefrom at the edge thereof to afford a packing groove vcooperating with the edge of said easing; and a plate held by said rings.
4. The Combination with ya cylindrical casing; of cover `,therefor Comprising an .outer ring and an inner 4ring .of sheet metal, the former being doubled upon itself for a portion and flaring outwardly to provide -a suitable rim for the cover and having .one wall thereof extending over the easing and the other ltoward the `easing and adapted .to
it over the same, and the said inner ring haring a wall extending toward said :easing following the similar wall of said outer ring and offset therefrom at the edge thereof to afford a packing groove vCooperating with the edge of said casing; a plate held by said rings; and a hinge, one leaf of which is secured to the two inwardly extending walls of the outer and inner rings and the other leaf to the said Casing to hingedly oonneCt ,the @over thereto.
5. The combination with a Cylindrical easing; of a Cover therefor .comprising an vouter ring and an inner ring of sheet metal, the former having one wall thereof extendingf over the casing and the other toward the easing and adapted to fit over the same, and the said inner Yring being channel shaped, one wal'l thereof extending toward said easing and following the similar wall of said to afford a packing groove cooperating with the edge of said Casing, and the other wall .of said ,ehannel shaped ring extending a short distance toward said easing to provide an abutment; and a plate .held between the wall of the outer ring extending over said .eas-ing .and rthe said abutment.
i6. rlhe combination with a cylindrical casing; yof aeoyer ,therefor Comprising an outer ring and an linner ring of Sheet metal, the former being doubled upon itself for ,a portion and flaring outwardly to provide a -suitable rim for the eover and one wall thereof .extending oyer .the .easing and the other toward the easing and .adapted to fit over the same, and 2the said inner ring being -ehannel shaped, one wall thereof extending toward said easing and following :the similar wall of said outer ring and `offset therefrom at its ,edge to afford a packing groove Aeooperating with 'the zedge of said easing, and the ether wall of said .channel shaped ring extending a short distance toward said easing to provide an abutment; a plate vheld between the wall of the outer ring ,extending over said casing andthe said abutment; and a. hinge, one leaf ,of which is secured to the two eQpe,rating inwardly extending walls of the .outer and inner rings .and the other leaf to the `said ,easing to hingedly conneet the cover thereto.
