PATENT JAMES RICHEY, OF MARYVILLE, TENNESSEE.
COFFIN.
.SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,878, dated May 28, 1901.
Application filed December l l, 1900. Serial Nok 39,520. (No model.)
T0 tZZ whom, it nutylconccrn:
Be it known that I, JAMES RICHEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maryville, in the county of Blount and State of Tennessee, have invented' a new and useful Casket or Coin, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in caskets or cofiins; and the object thereof is to provide a cofn or casket which will be airtight and waterproof and of simple and inexpensive construction.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, particularly pointed out in the claims, and clearly illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Fignre lis a longitudinal-sectional View through a coffin or casket constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig.. 2 a transverse section of the same.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 5 designates the outer casing of the usual form of a casket, and consists of an outer and an inner layer of wood, between which a packing of waterproof paper 5 or similar material is placed. Secured to theV inside of this casing and near the upper edge thereof is a bead or strip 52 of Wood, which passes entirely around the interior of the casing.
Fitting in casing 5 I provide a stationary metal lining 6, which at its upper edge is bent to'surround the bead 52 and has its upper edge secured upon the upperedge of the bead.
8 designates a cover of wood entirely surrounded by a metallic covering 8 and having a ange 8l formed on its lower end, which when the cover is in position rests upon the bead, to which it is secured by screws 9. Betweenlthe contact edges of this bead and the cover I provide a rubber packing Se, so that when said cover is in position all air will be excluded from the interior of the casing.
Said cover is provided with a glass plate l0, tightly secured in grooves 11, formed at the upper edge of the cover by suitable cement, and this plate can constitu te either the entire upper wall of the cover or only a portion thereof, as may be desired. An outer cover 12 is provided, having flanges l2, which rest on the upper edge of the casing 5. This top protects the inner top, which, as will be seen from the drawings, extends thereinto.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. A casket having the body thereof formed of an inner and an outer wall, waterproof material arranged between said walls, a bead se* `cured upon the interior of the body near the upper end thereof and extending around its sides and ends, ametallic lining upon the interior of said body, and bent at its upper edge to incase the bead, a lid resting upon said bead, a metallic covering entirely incasing the walls of said lid, securing devices for attaching said lid to the bead, and a packing interposed between said lid and bead, substantially as described.
2.-A casket consisting of a body portion, formed of an inner and an outer wall, waterproof material interposed bet-Ween said walls, a bead upon the interior of the body and eX- tending around the side and end walls thereof, and at or near its upper edge, a metallic lining upon the interior of said body, having its upper edge bent to surround the bead, a lid having a ange at its lower edge resting upon the bead, securing devices for attaching said lid to the bead, a metallic casing for said iid, and an outer lid resting upon the upper edge of the body of the casket and inclosing said inner lid, substantially as described.
