ADJUSTABLE HOLDBAGK FDR CRUCIBLES.
To all whom t may concern:
Bc it known that I, HERMAN BEULKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Castle, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable IfIoldbacks for Crucibles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in supporting devices and more particularly to a supporting device or hold-back for crucibles, used in connection with machines or devices for pouring molten metal and the primary object of the device is to provide an improved hold-back which is capable of application to crucibles of various sizes.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a device which may be quickly and readily applied to any shank used for supporting crucibles and a still further object resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, ine);- pensive to manufacture and one which will be very eilicient and useful in operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device showing the manner in which the same is applied to use. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail side elevation of the device. Fig. a is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail plan View of the device. Fig. G is a vertical section through the sliding block used on the device. Fig. 7 is a front elevation of my device removed, showing parts in section; and Fig. 8 is a side elevation of a slightly modified form of the device.
In describing Amy invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which- 1 indicates a crane-bail, such as used in overhead devices, in the arms of which are rotatably mounted the arms Q'cf a supporting shank, said arms engaging with a Specification of Letters Patent.

circular or ring-like member 3, which directly receives therein a crucible 4;.
My invention contemplates the provision of a means for retaining the crucible in an upright position and, to this end, I provide my improved hold-back or supporting member. The same consists of a split ring 5, applicable to one of the arms 2 of the shank, said ring pivotally retaining between the free ends thereof one end of a rod or arm G. Joined to the opposite end of the arm or rod 6, in any manner desired, is a Y-shaped portion 7 which is curved downwardly and thence upwardly to form a straddling outer end portion on the device, the outer arms of said straddling portion 7 being arranged vertical and parallel, as shown at 8.
A clamping device is provided for adjust able engagement with the vertical arms S of said straddling portion, consisting of a pair of inverted L-shaped arms which are arranged to contact respectively with the inner opposed faces of the arms 8, said L-shaped arms 9 being secured at their lower ends t0 the transverse strips or plates 10 which are arranged in engagement with opposite faces of the vertical arms 8. The upper ends of the inverted L-shaped arms 9 are held in proper position with respect to one another by means of a pin 11, on which is mounted a spacing sleeve 12. This substantial clamping device is, as will be seen from the construction disclosed, slidably arranged between the arms 8, the upper hooked portion thereof being adapted for engagement with the upper end of the Crucible 1. In order to retain this clamping portion in any adjusted position, the arms 8 are provided with alining horizontal slots or channels 13 and the lower portions of the arms 9 are provided with similar slots or channels 14: adapted to register therewith. A pin or bolt 15 is adapted to be disposed through the registering channels or slots 13 and 14:, whereby said arms 9 will be held in any ad justed position with respect to the arms 8. From this construction, it will be seen that the device is applicable for use to crucibles of various sizes.
In applying the device, it will be seen that the straddling portion 7 on the one end of the arms 8 will straddle the one arm 2 of the shank and the hooked ends of the arms 9 are designed for engagement with the upper end of the crucible. In order to lock the arm G securely in engagement with the arm of the shank, the rings 1G and 17 are provided and through the inclination of the arm 6, when the device is positioned, it will be seen that said rings may be forced into frictional engagement. with said arm and the arm of the shank. rfhus through this medium the crucible may be securely held in position in the circular portion 3 of the shank, at all times.
Slidably mount-ed on the arm G, is a block 1S, the upper end of which is slotted to provide ears 19 and pivotally mounted between these ears is the bail holder 20. This bail holder consists of an arm which is bifurcated or forked to straddle the one arm of the bail and said bail holder is arcuate in elevation. The free ends of the arms of this bail holder are designed somewhat angularly, as shown at 21 and are adapted to receive in engagement. therewith the upper edge of a strip or plate 22 which is secured to the front faces of the arms 8 at the upper ends of the latter. An addit-ional strip or plate 23 is secured to the rear face of the arms 8 by the same means which secures the strip or plate 22 thereto and the outer ends of the strip or plate 23 are bent upwardly, as shown at 24C to form stops or guides, whereby to retain the arms of the bail holder 2O in position when the same is lowered. The bail holder 2O straddling as it does, the one arm of the bail and engaged with the members at the upper ends of the arms 8, will, obviously, prevent the rotating of the arms 2 in the lower ends of the arms of the bail, 1, which is understood to be held substantially stationary in an upright position, as shown in F ig. 1 of the drawings and the clucible is thus retained in an upright position. By raising the bail holder 20, however, and sliding the block 18 in a direction toward the ring 5, said bail holder is disposed to its ineffective position and the arms 2 may then be rotated in the arms of the bail 1, whereby to upsetl the crucible for obvious purposes. In view of the particular' manner of applying my improved device to use, it will be seen that the crucible will, at all times, be held securely in position in the circular portion of the shank.
1n Fig. S, I have shown a slightly modified form of my invention, particularly adapted for use in smaller work, where no crane is used. 1n this form of the device, a shank is provided having a central ring or band-like section 26 formed therein to receive a Crucible Slidably mounted on one arm of the shank, is a ring-like member 2S, similar to the member 5 described in the first mentioned form and pivotally carried on this ring-like member is an arm 29, the outer end of which is designed angularly, as
' shown at S0, to form a clamping or engaging hook adapted to be engaged with the upper end of said Crucible. Ring members 31 and 32 are loosely applied over the arm 29 and the arm of the shank 25, and in view of the inclination of said arm 29, when the hook portion thereof is effectively engaged with the Crucible, these ring members may be disposed on the arms to bind tightly thereon. When so disposed, it is apparent that the arm 29 will be securely locked in its operative position to secure the Crucible in the band or ring portion 26 of this shank. The shank with the crucible securely held therein, may then be carried from place to place and operated, as desired.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved device, the operation thereof will be readily understood and it will be seen that l have provided a device which is simple and durable in construction, ineXpensive to manufacture and one which will be very eiiicient and useful in operation.
lVhile l have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a bail and a shank mounted for rotation in the arms thereof; of an arm pivotally supported at one end thereof on said shank, the opposite end of said arm being bifurcated to form a straddling portion thereon, the free end portion of said strad'dling portion terminating in a pair of parallel and vertical arms, a clamping member adjustably carried between said last mentioned arms, adapted for engagement with an object carried by the shank, means to securely clamp the first mentioned arm to the shank, and means slidably mounted on said first mentioned arm adapted for contact with one arm of said bail whereby to prevent the rotation of the shank therein.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a bail and a shank mounted for oscillation in the arms thereof; of an arm pivotally supported at one end thereof on said shank, the opposite end of said arm having a fork-like straddling portion joined thereto, said straddling member terminating in a pair of vertical parallel arms, a hook-like member adjustably carried between said last mentioned arms and adapted for engagement withan object carried by the shank between the arms of the bail, transverse plates secured to the upper ends of the arms of the straddling member,
- means to secure the rst mentioned arm to the shank to prevent movement of the former with respect to the latter, a siiding member carried on the iirst mentioned arm, and a bifurcated arm carried by said sliding member adapted to straddle one arm of the bail, to prevent the rotation of the shank and parts carried thereby in the bail, the iree end of said bifurcated arm being adapted to rest on the transverse plates at the upper end of said straddling member.
3. in a device of the class described the combination with a bail and a shank mount ed for rotation in the arms thereof; ot an arm pivotally supported at one end thereof on said shank, a fork-like straddling member curved compoundly and joined to the opposite end of said pivoted arm, the iree end portion of said straddling member terminating in a pair of vertical parallel arms, a hook-like member mounted 'for vertical adjustment between the arms of said straddling member and adapted to engage an object supported on the shank between the arms of said bail, ring members carried on the first mentioned arms and also encircling said shank, whereby to secure said arms and parts carried thereby to the shank, a sliding member mounted on said iirst 1nentie-ned arm, a Y-shaped arm pivotally carried on said sliding member and adapted to straddle one arm of said bail to prevent the rotation of the shank and parts carried thereby, and plates carried on the upper ends of the straddiing member adapted to receive the free ends of the arms of the Y- shaped member in contact therewith to atord a rest for the latter.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a shank adapted to support an object; of an arm pivotally and adjust-ably carried thereon, a hook-like member adjustably connected to the free end portion of said pivotal and adjustable arm adapted for engagement with an object carried by the shank, and means carried on said arm for engagement with the shank to secure said arm in its eliective engaging po sition.
