To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD P. CARR, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Orucible-I-lolding Device, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to a crucible holding device and consists of novel means for holding a crucible by the employment of which one man can be dispensed with when the crucible is being poured, with consequent economy in the cost of production.
In the devices heretofore employed for holding crucibles during the pouring operation it has been necessary in conjunction therewith to employ an extra man who retains the crucible in proper relation with respect to the holder by holding on to the same with a hook or other device in order to prevent the crucible slipping from the crucible holding device as would otherwise occur after a portion of the molten metal has been discharged from the crucible.
In order to overcome the necessity of em ploying an extra man for this purpose and thereby reduce the cost of manufacture, I'
have devised a novel construction of crucible holding mechanism wherein the possibility of the crucible slipping from the crucible holding device is positively prevented.
To the above ends my invention consists of a novel construction of a crucible holding device which includes means engaging the outer periphery of the crucible which is adapted to be interlocked with means engaging the forward end of the crucible.
My invention further consists of a novel construction of hold back hook and novel means for clamping the same in assembled position with respect to the crucible holding device.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that'my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a clip for holding crucibles embodying my invention, the same being shown in assembled position with respect to the crucible. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view of a portion of Fig. 1 showing more clearly the clamping mechanism.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings :-1 designates a crucible, the greatest diameter of which intermediate the ends of the crucible, the crucible being of the usual construction and provided with the rim 2. designates an annular member or holder, the inner diame ter of which is less than the greatest diameter of the crucible. T he holder 2- is provided with the arm at, the outer end of which is preferably rounded as indicated at 5, whereby the same may rest on a suitable support when desired, so that the friction between the end of the arm 1 and the support will be reduced to a minimum. The holder 3 is also provided with an arm 6 preferably located diametrically opposite the arm a, said arm 6 being provided with a forked handle 7 whereby the same may be readily grasped by both hands of the operator.
8 designates a bracket which is secured to the annular portion of the holder 3 by means of suitable fastening devices such as the rivets 9 or their equivalents. The bracket 8 is outwardly deflected to form two sides 10 and 11, thereby forming an aperture 12 therebetween and the sides 10 and 11 are connected by the end portion 13, the lower end of which is recessed at let in which the clamping lever 15 is adapted to be seated when in clamped position, as will be understood by reference to Fig. 1, the clamping lever 15 being mounted on the pivot pin 16, which latter engages the sides 10 and 11 of the bracket. The forward end of the clamping lever 15 is provided with a cam face 17.
18 designates a hold back device or retaining member preferably consisting of an integral piece of material, the upper end of which is deflected to form a hooked portion 19 which is adapted to engage the upper end of the crucible 1 as will be readily apparent from F igs. l and 2. The hold back lever 18 has preferably a contour similar to that of the aperture 12.
The manner of assembling my device will now be readily apparent and is as follows The annular holder 3 is'placed on the crucible and the hold back lever 18 is dropped thereon so that the hook 19 engages the rim 2 thereof, it being understood that the end of the hold back lever 18 passes through the aperture 12. The annular holder 3 is then raised to a desired height and the free end of the lever 15 actuated to cause the cam end 17 thereof to engage the outer face of the hold back lever 18 and clamp the same with respect to the annular portion of the holder.
It will now be apparent that when the crucible is being poured the hook portion 19 of the hold back lever 18 engages the forward end of the crucible and is secured in such a manner that the crucible will be positively prevented from slipping or becoming disengaged from the holder 3 when the metal is being poured.
My novel construction of clamping device is constructed in such a manner that it is not affected by the heat of the crucible and there is no liability of the same getting out of order. It will be further apparent that my device may be cheaply and economically manufactured and subjected to rough usage without affecting the same, and it may be readily and quickly secured in assembled position with respect to the crucible.
Although my device is especially designed to be used with crucibles, it will be apparent that it may be employed in connection withother similarly shaped articles.
.It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction of a device for holding a crucible which embodies-the features of advantage enumerated asidesirable in the statement of the inventi on iande the above description, and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advan- *tages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a crucible holding device, the combination'with a device engaging the periphery of the crucible intermediate the ends thereof, of a retaining member engaging the upper end of the crucible, and means in cluding a cam for locking said member to said device.
2. In a crucible holding device, the combination with a device engaging the periphery of the crucible intermediate the ends thereof and provided with a plurality of grasping members, of a retaining member engaging the upper end of the crucible, and means including a cam for locking the retaining member with respect to said device.
3. In a crucible holding device, the combination with an annular member adapted to engage the outer periphery of the crucible and provided with grasping portions, of a bracket secured to said member, a clamping member carried by said bracket, and a hook having one end adapted to coact with said clamping member.

In a crucible holding device, the combination of an annular member, an arm extending therefrom, a second arm extending therefrom and having a forked end, a bracket secured to said member, a lever pivoted to saidbracket and having a cam face, and a retaining member having one end thereof deflected and the other end adapted to be engaged by said cam face.
5. In a crucible holding device, the combination of an annular member, a plurality of arms extending therefrom, one of which has a forked end, a bracket secured to said member and provided with an aperture, a clamping lever pivoted in said aperture, and a hold back lever adapted to pass through said aperture and be engaged by said clamping lever, and the forward end of said hold back lever being deflected to engage one end of the article to which the device is secured.
6. In a crucible holding device, the combi nation of an annular member, a plurality of arms extending therefrom, one of which has a forked end, a bracket secured to said member and provided with an aperture, a clamping lever pivoted in said aperture, said bracket having a recess in which said clamping lever is adapted to be seated, and a hold back lever adapted to pass through said aperture and be engaged by said clamping lever, and the forward end of said hold back lever being deflected to engage one end of the article to which the device is secured.
