To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Bnnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Bending Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pipe bending machines and consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof as will behereinafter fully described. and pointed out in the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as.follows:
Figure 1 is a plan view, of the machine.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2.2 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an end view-of the clamp.

1 marks the table, 2 the legs, 3 the cross piece of the frame supporting the ta'ble, 4 a rotatively mounted centrally located sheave having a groove corresponding to the size of pipe to be bent, and 5 a sheave operating in conjunction with the sheave 4 and having a corresponding groove.
A sleeve 6 extends through an opening 7 in the table and is secured in the sheave 4. It is provided with a head 8 holding the sheave in proper position on the table. The sheave 5 is journaled on a pin 9. Th pin extends through a slot 10 in the table top, this slot being curved with the axis of the sheave 4 as a center. The pin 9 extends through the slot 10 and has'a head 11 formed on its end below the table. Rollers 12 are mounted on an axle 13 and operate between the bottom of the table and a plate 14, the plate 14 being suspended from the table top by means of bolts 15. A lever 16 is provided with a pin 17 near one end whlch is adapted to drop into the sleeve 6 and thus form a pivotal mounting for th lever. The lever has a squared opening 18 which 1s arranged on a squared extension 19 on the pm 9. A nut 20 is screwed on to the top of the pin securing the lever firmly on the pin. A

When it is desired to insert a pipe the lever 16 is removed. This is accomplished by removingthe nut 20 which permits the lever to 'be lifted off the pin, the pin 17 being merely slipped into the opening in the sleeve 6. The sheave 5 can then be moved away from the sheave 4, the slot 10 being provided with extensions 38 to permit of this radial movement of the pin, there being one of the slots 38 at each end of the slot 10. The lever is then put in place and the lever swung by means of the handle. This carries the sheave 5 around the sheave 4 bending the pipe to the curve of the periphery of the sheave. The rotative sheave at the center prevents any strain longitudinally of the pipe "and assists in preventing a rupture of the pipe. The rollers 12 engaging the under surface of the table secure the sheave 5 and also through the lever 16 the sheave 4 in place on the table top so that there can be no moving of the sheaves away from the top or away from each other. The squared end of the pin 9 looks the rollers in proper relation to their path of movement. After the pipe is bent it may be desirable to remove the sheave 5 from the sheave 4 at the end of the bend and for this reason the extensions 38 are provided at both ends of the slot. Further it may be desirable toreverse the bending action under which circumstances the two extensions are desirable.
It will be noted that the sheave 4 determines the curve of the pipe and consequently the size of this sheave is of some im portance. Difi'erent sheaves may be supplied of different sizes. l/Vhere the sheave is shifted the shoulder 33 and the clamp are adjusted so as to bring them into alinement wit-h the periphery of the sheave. With any change of sheave 4 there must also be a change of the sheave 5, a larger sheave 5 being used with a smaller sheave 4:.
What I claim as new is 1. In a pip bending machine, the combination of a table having a curved slot therein; a grooved former concentric with the slot; a sheave; a bearing pin for the sheave, said pin extending through the slot; a swinging mounting for the bearing pin having a pivot at the axis of the former; a roller secured to the mounting and operating on the undersid of the table at the side of the slot; and devices for holding the roller in alinement with its direction of travel.
2. In a pipe bending machine, the combination of a table having a curved slot therein; a grooved former concentric with the slot; a sheave; a bearing pin for the sheave, said pin extending through the slot;
a lever swingingly mounted at the axis of the. former and secured to the bearing pin; and a head on the pin comprising a roller adapted to engage the under side of the table for holding the sheave in parallel relation with the table and means for maintaining the roller in alinement with its direction of travel.
3. In a pipe bending machine, the com bination of a table having a curved slot therein; a first sheave; a sleeve on which the sheave is rotatively mounted, the axis of the sleeve being at the axis of said slot; a second sheave; a pin on which the second sheave is journaled extending through the slot, said sheave having a squared extension; a lever having a pin extending into the sleeve and an opening through Which the squared end of the pin extends; means for securing th lever on the pin; and av head on the pin below the table top forming a guide operating against the under side of the table for holding the second sheave in parallel relation with the table.
