CRUCIBLE HANDLING DEVICE Filed Dec. 7, 1945 Ill/111110111111 1 Im/mtor W 1,, I ttore]:
Patented Jan. 4, 1949 UNITED STATES PAT ENT IAOFFICE 2,458,141 M I CRUCIBLE HANDLINGDEVICE Frank D. Bromley, Portsmouth,R. I. Application December 7, 1945, Serial N o. 633,401
Myinvention as described herein, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, consists of a device for handling crucibles or other like containers, an object of which is to provide a crucible carrier and manipulator adapted to eliminate danger in the handling thereof.
Another objectof my invention is to provide a self-adjusting crucible carrier.
A further object of this invention is to provide a combined carrier and pouring device for liquid or other containers.
Another object of my invention is to provide a crucible handling device adapted for use in connection with containers of various sizes and shapes and whereby to secure the container to the carrier.
A primary object of my invention is the provision of means whereby highly heated crucibles, ladies, or acid carboys or other like containers, the contents of which are dangerous, can be carried in safety without danger of breakage and which can be tilted for pouring the contents without danger to life or limb of handlers or workers.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of my device,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3--3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a detail top plan view of one member of my device, and
Figure 5 is a detail longitudinal sectional view of a hinge arm.
While one embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the above referred to drawings, it is to be understood that they are merely for the purpose of illustration and the various changes in construction may be resorted to in the course of manufacture in order that the invention may be utilized to the best advantage according to circumstances which may arise, Without in any way departing from the spirit and intention of my device, which is to be limited only in accordance with the appended claims. And while I have stated the primary field of utility of my invention it remains obvious that it may be employed in any other capacity wherein it may be found applicable.
In the accompanying drawings, and in the following specification, the same reference characters are used to designate the same parts and elements throughout and in which I0, refers to in a U shaped handle grip 3|.
my invention in its entirety and II, indicates a base or seat fora crucible or other container I2, said seat being provided with an annular upstandingrim I3, for preventing the container from slipping from the seat.
Hinged at various points around the seat and to said rim I3, at I4, I5, I6 and II, are a series of arms 18, I9, 20 and 2I, the free ends 22, of each of which incline inwardly and outwardly at 23 and 24, the inner incline being somewhat shaped to conform to the wall 25, of the crucible I2, and the outer incline for automatic adjustment of a hoop or band 26, thereupon.
Attached to the opposite sides of the hoop 26, are handle members 29 and 30, the one 29, of which may be straight and the other terminating Coiled upon the inner ends of the handles are springs 34 and 35, against the outer ends of which slidable collars 36 and 31, are adapted to seat. Pivotally connected to the opposite sides of these collars are the terminal ends of the arms 42 and 43, are hooks 44 and 45, which are adapted to engage over the upper edge 46, of the crucible I2. The arms I8 to 2I, are of such length that their heads 41, 48, 49 and 50, project above the belly portion 5!, of the crucible I2, or other member to be carried upon the device.
Projecting horizontally out from each of the heads 41 to 50, are the upper ends of vertical retainer arms 53, 54, etc., Within which the hoop 26, passes when the arms 29 and 30, are lifted up. These arms 53 and 54 which may be somewhat resilient, will hold the tapered hoop secured against the sharp incline of the arms l8 to 2I, and in case the device should accidentally overturn or be turned up, the hold back clamps 55 and 55, will prevent the member I2, from becoming detached from the carrier II). The inclined or tapered wall 51, of hoop 26, acting upon the quick inclines of arms I8 to 2|, will securely bind the crucible I2, in the carrier and prevent movement thereof and also in case of a cracking of wall 25, as frequently happens while being used, the parts of said wall can not spread to allow the contents of the crucible to escape with probably injury to the carriers of the device. Being carried by the handle 29, and the U-shaped hand grips 3|, will prevent the device from toppling over.
It is to be noted that the hoop 26, does not come into contact at any point with the crucible and is therefore air cooled, thus avoiding carrying heat to the handles.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practica if desired.
Having nowidescribed'my inven'tionrtlratwhich 10 I claim as new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
1. A handling device for containers comprising a base for a container, arms hinged *to the base for pivotal movement relative to the icnntai-ners on said base, a hoop surrounding said arms for retaining said arms in a raised position against the container, handles carried by said hoop for raising the same, collars carried by said handles, hold back clamps ,pivoted on said collars for engaging the upperedge of the container "on .sa'idhasaand resilient means between said hoop and said collars for .normally holding said collars outwardly fromsai'd hoop.
4 2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said arms include inclined outer surfaces, said hoop having a tapered inner periphery for hearing against the outer surfaces of said arms.
