SHIRT-STUD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn P. RownnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have. invented certain Improvements in Shirt-Studs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of shirt studs represented by the one shown in Reissue Patent No.11878 granted December 18, 1900, to Halsey M. Larter.
The objects of the present improvements are to prevent the force of the spring n returning the plunger to its normal position from being exerted upon the head of said plunger to dislodge the same; to secure a firm and rigid attachment of the head to the plunger; to enable the head to be more accurately and uniformly applied; to effect these improvements without materially changing the appearance of the shirt stud, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures, Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in central longitudinal section of a stud of my improved construction; Fig. 2 is a side vlew of the end of the plunger to which the head is applied, looking toward the front of the button; Fig. 3 is a similar view of the adjacent end of the barrel; Fig. 4: is a side view of the plunger head before it IS applied to the plunger; Fig. 5,shows in perspective a certain filler whlch is placed in the plunger head; Fig. 6 is a cross-section on line AA of Fig. 2, before the plunger head has been applied, and Fig. 7 is a simi lar section on line BB of Fig. 1, after the plunger head has been applied.
In said drawings, 1 indicates the front of the button, which front maybe made ornamental in any desired manner, and 2 indicates the shankprojecting from the back of said front. Said shank is formed from a stem of hollow wire and beyond the shank said hollow wire is bent at right angles to form a barrel '3 lying in a plane parallel to the front 1 of the button, said bend being suitably curved or rounded. At the outer side of said bend at the junction of the shank and barrel is an opening 4 in aline Specification of Letters Patent.

ment with the barrel, and a plunger 5 is adapted to slide in said barrel 3 through said opening 1. Said plunger is hollow and within the same is a spring 6 which bears against a block 71 which lies slidably in the plunger I 5 and is held in fixed position with relation to the barrel by a pin or screw 7 projecting from the wall of the barrel radially into the block 71 through a slot 8 extending longitudinally of the plunger 5. Said tongue andslot are preferably at the side of the barrel and plunger next to the front 1, and serve to keep the plunger from rotating in the barrel while allowing it to slide longitudinally. The spring 6 also bears against the end 9 of the plunger and normally projects the plunger 5 through the opening 4. At the same time said plunger can be slid longitudinally against the power ofthe spring 6 to bring its rear end 9 flush with the shank and barrel at their junction, so that the stud can be inserted in the garment.
The forward end of the plunger 5 is provided at its bottom or side away from the button front 1.with a short transverse eX- terior rib or protuberance 12, which is preferably stamped up from the wall of the plunger. This rib or protuberance engages the edge of the barrel 3 to limit retraction of the plunger to its normal position by the spring 6, a notch 13 being preferably formed in the edge of the barrel to receive the rib or protuberance, as shown in Fig. 3. Adjacent to the said rib or protuberance 12 and at a distance therefrom about equal to the thickness of stock employed in the shirt stud, is a second rib or protuberance'lt, said second rib or protuberance being also at the rear side of the plunger or side away from the front 1 and at a little distance from the extremity of the plunger. A cylindrical filler or solid disk 15 is inserted into the forward end of the plunger, forward of the rib or protuberance 14;, to prevent the said end from collapsing, and a conical head 16 is applied eXteriorly to said forward end of the plunger. The edges of said conical head are curled inwardly against the plunger 5, engaging the same at its rear side between the ribs or protuberances 12 and 1 1, and being pressed or forced so tightly against the plunger as to indent themselves into the wall thereof the rest of the way around the plunger, back of the filler 15. The reference numeral 17 indicates the groove thus indented by the curled edges 18 of the finished conical head 16, in the drawings, and 19 indicates the edges of the conical head 16 before it is applied to the plunger, see Fig. i. A very firm and positive attachment of the head to the plunger is thus effected, and one which can at the same time be quickly and easily made. ger head 16 does not engage the forward end of the barrel 3, in the use and manipulation of the stud, but such engagement is taken wholly by the rib or protuberance 12. There is thus no tendency to dislodge the head by constant hammering of the plunger in springing back to normalposition. On the other hand, the plunger head is positively prevented by the other rib or pro tuberance 14c from pulling off forwardly, as well as by the groove 17 formed in applying the head.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In a stud, the combination of a front, a stem bent to form a shank and a barrel, a hollow plunger in said barrel projecting from the forward end of the same, a head on the projecting end of said plunger, a spring in said plunger normally retracting the same into the barrel, and a stop projecting from the surface of the plunger adjacent its head and positively limiting movement of the head toward the barrel without obstructing its movement away from the barrel, whereby the head is prevented from striking the end of the barrel.
2. In a stud, the combination of a front, a stem bent to form a shank and a barrel, a hollow plunger in said barrel projecting from the forward end of the same, a head on the projecting end of said plunger, a spring in said plunger normally ret-racting the same into the barrel, and a stop projecting from the lateral exterior surface of the plunger adjacent its head adapted to abut against the end of the barrel and positively limit retraction of the plunger into the barrel without impeding its movement in the opposite direction, whereby the head is prevented from striking the end of the barrel.
8. In a stud, the combination of a front, a stem bent to form a shank and a barrel, said barrel having a notch in the edge of its forward end, a hollow plunger in said barrel projecting from the forward end of the same, a head on said projecting end of the plunger, a spring in said plunger nor Furthermore, the plan.
mally retracting the same into said barrel, and a stop projecting from the lateral exterior surface of the plunger adjacent its head adapted to loosely enter said notch and abut against the inner end wall thereof before the head engages the end of the barrel, whereby said head normally lies close to the end of the barrel but out of engagement therewith.
4. The hereindescribed stud, comprising a front, a. stem bent to form a shank and a barrel, a hollow plunger in said barrel projecting from the forward end of the same and having an exterior circumferentially extending groove at a distance from its extremity, the end portion of the plunger between its extremity and said groove being cylindrical, a cylindrical filler fitting inside said cylindrical end portion of the plunger, a conical head inclosing said end portion of the plunger wit-h its edges closed into said groove, and a spring in said plunger normally retracting the same.
5-. The hereindescribed stud, comprising a front, a stem bent to form a shank and a barrel, a hollow plunger in said barrel projecting from the forward end of the same and having a lateral protuberance at a dis tance from its extremity, a filler fitting inside the forward part of the plunger and preventing collapse of the same, a conical head inclosing the forward end of the plunger with its edges closing against the outer surface of the same on the opposite side of said protuberance from the extremity of the plunger, and a spring in said plunger normally retracting the same.
6. The combination of a tubular member, a filler fitting in the end of said tubular member and preventing collapse thereof, and a head inclosing said filler and end of the tubular member and having its edges closed against the tubular member at the opposite end of said filler from the extremity of the tubular member.
7. The hereindescribed stud, comprising a front, a stem bent to form a shank and a barrel, a hollow plunger in said barrel projecting from the forward end of the same and having exterior adjacent transverse bosses or ribs at a distance from its extremity, a head inclosing the forward end of the plunger with its edges gripping the same between said exterior bosses or ribs thereon, and a spring in said plunger normally retracting the same. p
