Description
G. P. KUEHN.
FASTENER FOR GARTERS.
APPLICATION FILED APR.8,1912,
Patented May 12, 1914.
NI ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES P. KUEHN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO A. STEIN & COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION.
FASTENER FOR GARTERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, 1914.
To an whom it may concern I Be'it known that I, CHARLES P. KUEHN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in-Fasteners for Garters, of which I do declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description, re erence being had to the'accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a mans garter having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail view of my improved fastener.
My improved fastener is more especially designed for use in connection with mens garters of the kind shown in the accompanying drawing. In this class of garters it is customary to provide upon the front pad of the garter a fastening plate carrying a stud or projection adapted to engage a fastener loop upon the free end of theleg encircling band of the garter. As heretofore made the pad memberof the garter fastener has comprised a stud-carrying plate having a long slot formed therein to permit the plate to be united by stitches to the face of the garter pad. In practice it is found that after the garters have been worn sometimethe strain upon the stud-carrying plate tends to loosen the stitches somewhat, thereby permitting the late to slide more or less through the 'stitc es and to be drawn-out of parallelism with the adjacent end of the pad. Moreover, when the stitches become stretched, there is a tendency of the plate to turn too freely within the St1tCh S, so that the late does not remain flat against the face 0 the P My present 1nvent10n 1s deslgned to overcome theseobjections and consist in the features of novelty hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and particularly pointed out in-the claims at the end of this specification.
A designates the'pad of the garter and B denotes the leg encircling band. The leg encircling band is connected to the garter pad by means of the fastened members D and E.
The fastener member D is connected to the front face of the garter pad at a distance from the corner thereof, so that when the member E has Its loop a in engagement with the stud d of the member D the underlying corner portion of the pad A will prevent the metal of the fastener members from contactmg with the skin or garment of the wearer. The member D is shown as formed of thin plate metal with a slot d forming a bar (I that will be united to the garter pad by means of cross stitches f.
In my improved fastener I reduce the width of the bar d at its ends preferably by formin notches d and cl adjacent the ends of the ar. By this means the end stitches of the row of stitches 7 will fall within the notches (Z and (l and will prevent the slipping of the fastener member D within the row of stitches f. At each side of the fastener member D, adjacent the ends of the bar d, are formed the projecting portions d". The purpose of these projecting portions is to prevent the up-turning of the fastener member D and thus insure that the fastener member shall lie flat against the surface of the pad A. a
The novelty of my present invention consists in reducing the ends of the bar d preferably by the notches d and d, and in providing the lips orextensions to prevent the accidental overturning of the fastener member D.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fastening member for arter pads formed of a thin sheet metal plate slotted adjacent one edge to form a straight attaching bar extending from side to side of said fastening member and adapted to engage a row of stitches extending over said ar throughout the length'thereof, the ends of said bar being reduced in width where it joins the side portions of said plate, the reduced end portions of said bar being adapted to receive end stitches to prevent the slipping of the fastening member.
2. The combination with a garter pad, of
a fastening member formed of thin sheet or moire project-ions d at the ends of said metal slotted adjacent one edge to form an bar.
attaching bar adapted to receive a row of CHARLES P. KUEHN. stitches extending thereover to secure said Witnesses: 5 fastening member snugly against the face of GEORGE P. FISHER,
the pad, said fastening member having one KATHARINE GERLAOH.
