Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known. that we, JOHN MGNEIL, CHAnLns MGNEIL, B. So, and WILLIAM An- .xo'r'r MGNEIL, subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residents of Govan, in the county of Lana-rk, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydraulic Pressure-Regulating Gear for Sugar-Cane Mills and the like, of which the following is the specification.
The invention relates to that type of hydraulic pressure-regulating gear for sugarcane wills and the like in which the cylinuer is in the form of an aperture in the roll. housing cap, which cylinder'aperture is closed at its upper end by a plug-like cover fitting within it and packed in any convenient manner.
The invention has for its object to provide improved, simple and effective means such that the plug-cover may be readily and effectively secured in place and equally easily removed.
The usual ram acting upon the upper block of the roll bearing works in the lower part of the cylinder. The upper end of the cylinder is closed by an annular plug-like cover fitting within it. According to the invention, above the annular part of the plug-cover within the cylinder and at oppo site sides thereof, there are outwardly projecting lugs the peripheries of which are curved to a radius struck from the center of the plug-cover and merge into the other two sides of the upper part of the plug-cover, which latter sides are parallel to each other. The upper part of the plug-over is thus of oblong shape in plan with rounded ends and of a width between its parallel sides less than thewidth of an opening formed across or in the upper part of the roll housing cap to permit of the insertion and withdrawal of the ram and plug-cover. At opposite sides of the upper part of the roll housing cap which is above the cylinder, recesses are formed of an internal diameter equal to the external diameter of the curved lugs on the plug-cover, so that the latter is held in place when the lugs are engaging in the recesses and readily freed by turning the plug-cover to bring the parallel sides of the upper part of the cover opposite the recesses and thus permit of the cover being with drawn through the opening in the upper part of the roll housing cap. If preferred,
the recesses in the opposite sides of the upper part of. the roll housing cap instead of being curved counterpart to the lugs on the plug-cover, may extend straight across the cap.
In order that the invention and the mannor of performing the same may be properly understood there is hereunto appended a sheet of drawings showing in Figure 1 in plan and in Fig. 2 in sectional side elevation part of a mill roll. housing cap with hydraulic gear of the type referred to and embodying an example of the invention, while Fig. 3 is a plan showing slight modifications of the roll housing cap.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings the roll housing cap A has formed through it the usual aperture, the lower part of which forms the cylinder for a usual ram B acting upon the roll bearing. The upper end of the cylinder is closed by an annular plug-like cover C. Above the annular part of this cover and at opposite sides thereof the plug-cover has 011 it outwardly projecting lugs D, the peripheries of which are arcs struck from the center of the plug and merge into the other two sides of the upper part of the plug-cover, which latter sides are parallel to each other. The upper part of the plug-cover is of a width between its parallel sides less than the width of an opening which extends across the upper part of the roll housing cap, so that this part of the plug-cover is of oblong shape in plan with rounded ends.
Recesses E are formed in the upper part of the roll housing cap and at opposite sides of that part. These recesses are of an internal diameter equal to the external diameter of the curved lugs D. The recesses may either be curved counterpart to the curved lugs or, as shown by chain lines K in Fig. 1, they may extend straight across the cap.
To secure the plug-cover C in the upper end of the cylinder, it is passed through the opening across the upper part of the roll housing cap A with the parallel sides of the upper part of the cover opposite the recesses E, and then given a quarter turn to cause the lugs D to engage in the recesses. Conversely the plug-cover is readily freed by turnin it back to its first position so as to withc raw the lugs D from the recesses E, when it may be lifted out through the opening across the upper part of the roll 7 housing cap. Eye bolts G are screwed into the upper surface of the plug-cover C to facilitate handling of the cover, and a central aperture H is formed through the cover for pipe connection.
The usual bolt receiving apertures L in the cap permit the passage therethrough of securing bolts in well known manner, so that the usual washers and nuts on the up per ends of the bolt overlie and engage the upper face of the cap to hold the latter in position. The upward strain transmitted by the plug to the cap after the hydraulic pressure is applied, is thus taken in large part by the housing bolts themselves to which the thrust is transmitted through the adjacent portion of the cap body. The ear ample shown in the top part of Fig. 3 only differs from that hereinbefore described in that the opening extending across the upper end of the roll housing cap is bounded at its ends by a curved strengthening rib J which joins the upstanding parts of the cap, while the lower part of Fig. 3 only differs in that the strengthening rib J is straight instead of being curved.
' lVhat we claim is 1. In a hydraulic pressure-regulating gear for sugar-cane and like mills, a roll-housing cap with cylinder aperture and boltreceiving apertures lying on each side of the latter, a plug cover for closing said cylinder aperture, an upper part on said plug cover of oblong form in plan with rounded ends, an opening in the upper part of the body of the roll-housing cap above the cylinder aperture, recesses at opposite sides of this opening and lying below the level of the bolt heads, to receive and engage with the rounded ends of the plug cover, whereby the upward thrust of the plug cover is in part transmitted to the bolt heads.
2. In a hydraulic pressure-regulating gear for sugar-cane and like mills, a roll-housing cap with cylinder aperture and bolt-receiving apertures lying on each side of the latter, a plug cover for closing said cylinder aperture, an upper part on said plug cover of oblong form in plan with rounded ends.
an opening in the upper part of the body of the roll-housing cap above the cylinder aperture, said opening being bounded at its I ends by strengthening ribs which join the parts of the cap above the cylinder aperture, recesses at opposite sides of this opening and lying below the level of the bolt heads, to receive and engage with the rounded ends of the plug cover, whereby the upward thrust of the plug cover is in part transmitted to the bolt heads.
3. In hydraulic presslire-regulating gear for sugar-cane and like mills, a roll-housing cap with cylinder aperture and boltreceiving apertures lying on each side of the latter, a plug cover for closing said aperture, an upper part on said plug cover of oblong form in plan with rounded ends, an opening in the upper part of the body of the roll-housing cap above the cylinder aperture, recesses at opposite ends of this opening and lying below the level of the bolt heads, the upper part of the plug cover being of a width between its parallel sides less than the width of the opening which extends across the upper part of the rollhousing cap vand the recesses at opposite sides of the opening being of an internal diameter substantially equal to the external diameter of the curved ends on the upper part of the plug cover, substantially as described.
4. A roll-housing cap of the character described, comprising a body generally oblong in plan, vertically apertured centrally to form a plunger well and at each end to permit the passage of securing bolts therethrough, in combination with a plug cover having a lower portion fitting within said plunger well to form a closure therefor and an upper winged portion of greater diameter, recesses in the body of the cap below the level of the bolt-heads and opening from the well toward the opposite ends of the cap to receive the wings on said plug cover and a transr'erse aperture in the face of the housing communicating with the said longitudinal recesses to permit the plug wings to be passed into the latter, substantially as described.
