Description

WILLIAM eALLoWAY, lor PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
, Letters Patent No. 109,507,A dated November 22, 1870.
-nvlPRovEwnanr m `siaeunlnc THE roPsoF FRUIT-JARS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
- I, WILLIAM GALLOWAY, of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented an improved Fruit-Jar, of which the following is a specification.
Nature cmd Object of thc Invention.
My invention consists in the combination, lwith a detachable rod adapted to an extension of the body of the jar, and with the cover, of anarin, having cam-like projections, the whole forming a cheap and effectual fastening device, as will be fully described hereafter.
Description of the Accompany-ing Drawing. Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper'port-ion of my improved fruit-jar;
Figure 2J a plan viewof the same; and Figure 3, a sectional view on the line 1 ,2, fig. 2.
General Description.
The: body A of the jar has an extension, a, which projects above the neck l), the cap or cover c, andthe fastening devices above the latter.
A packing-ring, d, is placedv vertically outside the neck b, so as to project above the latter, and the cover cr, which maybe of metal or other material, bears directly upon this packing, and has, in the present instance, a il: nge, c', extending over the saine.
The fastening device consists otra detachable rod,
j, which is passed through holes in the extension a of the body of the jar, and of angarin, h, provided, at its opposite ends, with cam-like projections, t' fi. To t-ighten the cover, thc arm h is laid across the detachable rod in the manner shown in gs. 1 and2,
' while its cam-like projections are inserted beneath the rod, andbetween the same and the cover. The arm is then turnedin the direction of the arrows, until -the cam-like projections are tightened between the,
rod and the cover, and the latter is forced down onto the packing.
To remove the cover it is only necessary to turn the arm in the contrary direction, in order to loosen the cam-like projections and enable the rod f to be detached.
lThe extension of' .the body of the jar, q'so as to' protect the cover and fastening devices, and enable the jars to be packed closely together, is applicableto jars having tsteniugs different from that above described. It might be used, -for instance, in connection l with the cam-fastener for which Letters Patent 'were l granted me on the 5th day of April, 1870.
I prefer, however, to use the arm with its cam-like projections in connection with the detachable rod f, as a fastening device, on account of its simplicity and the readiness with which it can be manipulated.
In combination with the detachable rod f and cover, the arm h, with its wedge-like projections .i i.vv In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. v
WM. GALLOWAY.
lVitnesses 'Wim A. STEEL,
FRANK B, RICHARDS.
