HENRY MANNEOK AND CHARLES STROHMENGER, 0F NEW YORK, Y.
Letters Patent No. 109,435, dated November 22, 1870; antedated November 5, 1870;
IMPROVEMENT IN CMBlNED MUFFS AND PORTE-MONNAIES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that we, Hunan' Malvxnci'i and 'CHARLES S'rnoinirnscrin, both ofthe city, connty,
1t consists in the construction and arrangement of4 parts as hereinafter described.
The portcmonnaie being secured within a receptacle in the exterior of the muti', and rendered accessible or capable of being opened, when rcvquired, for the abstraction ot' money, and also capable of heilig very readily detached and removed from the mutt, when the latter is not required for use, so that the porte-monnaie may be carried in the hand or pocket, as it now ordinarily` is by iadies.
The invention also embodies an improved device for releasing the catch ot' .the' porte-monnaie from the de of the niui, said device forming at the same time the fastening of the covering-flap, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a muli", made according t0 our invent-ion, the iiap heilig opened to show the receptacle, in which the porte-momiaie is placed. A
Figure 2 is' a detached view, showing the portemonnaie in the rcceptaclci in the metallic frame, and the devices for releasing the catch ot' the flap, and also the fastening of the porte-monnaie.
Figure 3 is transverse section of the muti'. and receptacle, ,the iiap and portc-monnaio being both open.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view, showing the fastening of the porte-monnaie.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures. A, figs. 1 and 2, represents a muti", which may be of ordinary construction, and has an opening made in its exterior, (the fur portiom) so as to form a flap, 1%,which-.1nay be opened and closed likea hinged door.
This flap may be strengthened or rendered suliciently stift' by a sheet-metal back.
The tlap is secured, in a closed state, by a catch, o, which projects downward iiom its `inner surface near its outer edge, (see figs. 1 and 3.)
C is a frame, which mag,r be constructed of slicetw metal, swagcd in angle form, as shown bya transverse section ot' it in tig. 3, and ot" such dimensions as to receive the porte-monnaie D, and form a bed or bearing for the same, the porte-monnaie resting upon a ange, l1, of the frame, as .shown in iig. 3.
The porte-monnaie isretaincd in place within the frame U by means of two pins, c o, which project from said fra1ne,and pass into Aholes in thc frame E of the porte-monnaie, as shown in iig. 2.-
Thc catch a of the fiapmvhen the latter is closed, passes down through a slot, d, in the frame C, and engages with a button, c, having a spring, f, acting upon it to keepit engaged with the cat-ch, (see figs. i and The button c is at the' outer end. of arod, g, which extends through the mutt, as shown in fig. 3, and has a small thumb-wheel or button, 71, at
its inner end, for the convenience of turning the' button from the inner side of the inuit by the hand of the lady nsingthe saine, thereby liberating the catch n., when itis desired to raise the liap B.
The direction of the increment ot' the button c, to liberate the flap, is shown by the arrow in iig. 2.
'lhc fastening for the porte-momiaie frame E, constructed in muchthe ordinary way.
A catch, i, (see ligs. 2 and 4,) is attached lo a spring.r j, secured to the inner side of one of the parts k of the frame E, the catch Apassing through a slot, l, in the outer part m ot' thc frame, and kept engaged with one edge of said slot by the spring j, thc latter having a rod, n, attached, which passes up through the part 7.', and has a plato, o, on its outer end, which plat-c i'sv flush with -the outer surface of frame E, to admit of the-'latter iiting snugly within frame C.
The 'plate o has such a position, relatively, with the button c, that, when the latter is turned so as to strike the catch a and liberate the ilap B, it will, on being turned a little liirther in the direction of the arrow, strike thc plate 0, and admit of' the porteinounaie being opened.
Thus, by turning the thumb-wheel 7:,both the flap and porte-monnaie may be opened.
Having thus described our invention,v
What wc claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-ent, ism
1. A mutt1 provided with a frame, (l, covered .by a hinged flap l5, said frame being provided with devices to secure a porte-monnaie within it, in suoli a manner that the latter may he detached` when desired, as herein set forth.
2. The arm o on the rod y le, forming the locking device' for lthe iiap B, and adapted to re.- lease the catch ot' the porte-monnaie, as herein dcscribcd.
The above specitication ot our invention signed by us this 30th day of March, 1870'.
HENRY MANNEGK. C. L. STROHMENGER.
