OF'ALBANY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO CHAR-LE ,GANTZ 0F SAME PLAGE.
`Lattea Patent Np. 112,531,11ated March 14,1871..
L 1 IMPRoyEMENr 1N TEA-KETTLEs.
` Schedule referred to these Letters Patent and making pari: of the same.
` To allwhoin 'it may concern:- y. Beit known thatLlnTER Y. B. GANTZ, ofthe city `and county ofi lbany,"State -of N ew York, have 'invented certainnew and` useful Improvementsv in A Tea-Kettles, and I do" hereby declare that the following is a description thereof', reference being had to i the accompanying"drawingLfol-ming a part of this p i f vtion of a miter-gear, E, as shown, which miter-gear speciiication, in which-#- Figure 1 represents a vertical viewof a" tea-kettle embodying the improvements in this invention.
Figure 2 represents a section of a teakettle, and illustrates one operation of the invention.
Figure 3 represents a section of atea-kettlefand illustrates another operation of the invention.
` `Figure 4 is` aV side elevation of a section of a' tea,- kettle and the invention.'
Myinventionrelates tothe combination of mitergears `o`r sections of the saine, attached one to a wing of a lidand' `the other to the bail, by which the said lid is made to cover lor nncover the opening in the teakettle; and consists, in thepresent case,of a section of a mitere'gear attached to or made with a projecting i wing starting out Afrom one `side of the lid or cover, which isA pivoted to the kettle opposite one of the bailears in such a manner that thesad cover will be capableot swinging on the said pivot to one side. The said gear thus attached, is-0peratedjupon by a second gear i `or: section of the same, attached in a proper manner 4 `to the bail, so ithat when the said bail is Vturned in one `direction the gear; `attached tothe same will operate fthe gear attachedjtoone `side, and when the bail is t Iturnedin an opposite direction the operation will be J reversed.:
My inventionfnrther `relates to the combination ot' lapressing-"finger with the bail, and consists in a metal 'piece "attached directly with -the bail, at right angles to thesame, by Whichthe handle of the bail will be supported from contact with the body of theV kettle f and .thus prevent the said handle being heated, and
y at` the "same l,time`,.by contact with the gear on thc "cover,"will keepthe-said cover closed over the opening in the kettle.
llote'nablefothers skilledin the art to make and use l mynvention,I will proceed to describe it` in reference lto the `drawin'gandthe letters of reference marked thereon, the `same lettcrsvindicating like parts.
`In the drawing-f- A represents the body of'fa tea-kettle.
'B'. `is the lid or cover. G Gare the' earsto receivethe' bail'. Distlehail-handle.
Qn'one side of he: vbodyA of the `kettle I build a V i platform ortlat `portion, A(,joppositeone of the bailears,`0 as shonniunV fiigs'.L liand 4, the top' 'surface of. f which is on' the same plane withthe .top edgejc ofthe I make, with the lid or cover, B, .a wing or projec-v tion, B, the lower surface of which is onthe same -`vplane as the lower edge ofthe cover B.
The cover B is, by its wing B', pivoted to the plat- 'forni A', as shown in iigs. 1, 2, and 4, from which the said cover can swing.
To the wing B otlthe coverB is attached the seccan, in castfiron covers, be cast with the said covers.
Tothebaii-handle D, by means of the sqnare rivet AS,fis Aattacl'ied the section of a miter-gear, E, in such almanner that, when the hail'D is thrown from one side to the other, the said gear F is carried with it. And I do not confine myself t-o the particular manner of attaching the said gear 11 to thc bail D, as the squared rivet Sinny be dispensed with, andthe bail itself may be turnedat an angle and passed through its ear O, and squared to receive the said gear 11,
which gear would then be riveted down.
I also attach to the bail D, at right angles with the same, the pressing-finger G. The saidpressing-fnger may be made with the gear F, or may heV asepa'rate piece, 'though Iwould. prefer to make the said iinger with the said gear, as being least expensive.
It is not necessary in allcases to make thepressure. finger fast to the bail at the ear,as shown, but it` could be attached atother places, Vas-atGr', in tig.' 3, shown by dotted lines.
The said pressing-finger G I prefer to place so as to strike against the side oi' the gearE, as shown in iig. 3, for when so placed a double use of' the said pressing-finger G is obtained; that is, the said finger G is made not only tohold the bail up from Y contact with the body of the kettle, which ywill insure the Y i handle of the bail against being heated by such contact, but will at the same time act with the weight of the bail to keep .the cover B over the opening A", as shown in iig. V2. l i
The manner in which the several parts of my invention operate is 'as follows:
When the bail-handled) stands vertical, as in g. 4,.
the cover B. is free to tnrn'on itspivot to be thrown ofi' to one side or back over the opening by hand, without the aid of' the gears, which is desirable for filling the kettle from a hydrant or pump or elsewhere where it is desirable to suspend the kettle by its bail whilebeing lled.
` When the handle D is thrown to one side, as in figs.
i 1 and 2, the gear F `will -be caused to turn and operate the gear-E attached to the cover B, and turn it to,V
one Vside to uncover'the opening A. f-'lhisl isdesirable, especiallyvwhen it is necessary to refill the kettle while hot, and insures the operator from being scalded by the steam or being burned by the heat of the cover.
" 4After being-.lled, if the-handle D is thrown over j to the opposite'sde, asin fig. 3, the' gear will' turn 'vent the cover turning too far toward that side.
The pressing-hoger G, striking the said gear E or any other equivalent place, prevents the bail-handle from resting on the side of the kettle and from be# coming hot. s
The several parts of this invention are simple andVv not liable to get out of order, and its adoption would dispense With the necessity of using wooden-handled hails, which are somewhat expensive, for it is readil seen that, by preserving the handle from contactnivit y the body ofthe kettle, the -said handle will not become unduly heated, so as to burn the hands of the operator; and also that the cover, being capable of being removed from over the opening A", or closing over the same by the movement ofthe handle, will nasal 'the same, with the cover B, when the said cover is pivoted to the body of the kettle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the bail-handle D, the gear F,-or a section of the same, substantially as .and for the purpose set forth.
3. In ombmannnmth nl@L gem n and ban-handle D, the pressing-linger G, when all are arranged sub stantially as and for the purposeset forth.
'4. Operating the cover B to uncover lor covelover the opening A,`by the movement of the handle or bail D, when the means used are the gears E and F, or sections of the same, combined with the cover B, arranged to swing on a pivot, the bail-handle to be operated substantially in the manner as set forth.
