(Cl. 2-16) This invention relates to a wearing apparel accessory, and more particularly to an accessory adapted to enclose and shield articles and simultaneously to protect the hand of a person carrying the accessory.

It is an object of the invention to provide an accessory which is capable of protecting a wallet or pocketbook and other articles of diverse kind against the detrimental effect of atmospheric agents such as rain.

It is another object of the invention to provide an accessory which is not only suitable for receiving and protecting portfolios, parcels, books, magazines, gloves and the like, but is also of pleasing appearance and adapted to be complementary to a female dress.

In accordance with the present invention, the Wearing apparel accessory comprises a bell-shaped flexible container having a lower annular edge portion of larger diameter and an upper annular sleeve portion of smaller diameter and including an annular flexible outer wall and an annular flexible inner wall, the outer and inner walls being superimposed upon each other so as to define a substantially bell-shaped storage space therebetween and being joined at the lower edge and upper sleeve portions. The inner wall is formed with an opening therein, and the upper sleeve portion has a longitudinal slit therein. A first closure means serves for opening and closing the opening in the inner wall; a second closure means serves for closing and opening the slit. When the slit is open, the hand of the wearer may be inserted through the upper sleeve portion downwardly so as to be surrounded and protected by the bell-shaped container, and this container may be carried by the wearer upon closing of the slit in the upper sleeve portion with the latter fitting about the wrist of the wearer.

In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the walls of the accessory consist of a waterproof fabric of flexible, transparent material so that gloves and a wallet carried by the user will be visible therethrough and their aesthetic effect will be maintained. If desired, translucent material may be employed, which will likewise have a pleasing result.

The double wall which forms the protective container has an opening for receiving the articles to be stored therein. Preferably, a zipper serves to close such opening.

The sleeve or cuff portion at the upper end of the container may be inverted or folded and may be arranged so that it permits the fastening of a handle to the interior wall of the bag close to the upper end thereof. The handle may be gripped when the weight of the articles stored in the container renders it inconvenient to rely only on fastening the sleeve or cuff to the wrist of the user. While the handle is normally positioned in the interior of the container, it is arranged so that it may be turned about its points of attachment and positioned outside the container.

The novel features which are considered as characteristic for the invention are set forth in particular in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its construction and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the accessory according to the invention;

FIG. 2 is a sectional front view of the accessory showing articles stored therein and a wallet or handbag carried by the user;

FIG. 3 is a diagrammatic sectional front view of the accessory drawn on a reduced scale and showing its internal slot closed, its sleeve or cuff portion turned down, its handle positioned outside the container, and the walls of the container spread apart to demonstrate the large storage capacity thereof;

FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3 but showing the internal slot open, the cuff portion extended upwardly, and the handle positioned in the interior of the bag;

FIG. 5 shows a detail representing a zipper closing member;

FIG. 6 is a diagrammatic view of the accessory seen from below and drawn on a suitable reduced scale; and

FIG. 7 shows a detail representing the handle.

Referring to the drawings, the container or bag gen erally indicated at 1 is made from waterproof fabric or flexible plastic material which is preferably transparent or translucent and forms annular outer and inner walls 1a, 1b, respectively, connected to each other at a lower annular edge portion 10 and an upper annular sleeve or culf portion 4 of the container. As shown in the drawings, the container is generally bell-shaped so that its lower edge portion 10 has a relatively large diameter and its upper sleeve or cuff portion 4 has a smaller di ameter. Arranged in the center of the upper sleeve or cuff portion 4 is an orifice 2 for the passage of the hand 3 of a user.

The sleeve or cuff portion 4 forming the orifice 2 has a longitudinal slit 4a therein which may be opened and closed by means of a zipper 5. A closing member 6 of the zipper is provided with cords 7 having ornamental tassels 8 thereon.

When the zipper 5 is closed, the upper portion of the container is contracted so as to form a throat portion 9 which serves to hold the container on the wrist of the user.

The walls 1a, 1b of the container define a storage space 11 therebetween where various articles 12 such as parcels, papers, magazines, etc., may be placed. An opening or slot 13 in the inner wall 1b is controlled by means of a zipper 14 having a closing member 15. The slot 13 is spaced from the lower edge portion 10 and upper culf portion 4, but extends substantially in the direction from the lower edge portion toward the upper culf portion and is generally parallel to the slit 4a.

A handle 16 is fastened to the inner wall 1b adjacent the throat portion 9 and serves for carrying the container 1 when desired. The handle is disposed in the interior of the container when the sleeve or cuff portion 4 is arranged as shown in FIGS. 2 and 4, but may be positioned outside the container when the sleeve or cufi portion 4 is inverted or folded as shown in FIG. 3. A commodity 17 such as a pocketbook, wallet or handbag (FIG. 2) may be carried inside the container 1 so that not only the articles 12 but also the commodity 17 will be protected from rain or the like.

It will be clear from the foregoing description that the container or bag may be used either to shield articles 12 and a commodity 17 under unfavorable weather conditions, with the handle 16 being positioned inside the container, or simply to carry articles 12 in the storage space 11 in which case the sleeve or cuff portion 4 is preferably folded and the handle 16 is disposed outside the container.

To further improve the appearance, the walls of the container may bear printed or stamped ornamentations thereon.

It will be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together, may also find a useful application in other types of accessories diflering from the types described above.

While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodied in a container, it is not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention.

Without further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can by applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various applications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention and, therefore; such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalence of the following claims.

What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:

As a wearing apparel accessory adapted to enclose articles to be protected and simultaneously to protect the hand of a person carrying said accessory, in combination, a bell-shaped flexible container having a lower annular edge portion of larger diameter and an upper annular sleeve portion of smaller diameter and including an annular flexible outer wall and an annular flexible inner wall, said outer and inner walls being superimposed upon each other so as to define a substantially bell-shaped storage space therebetweenand being joined at said lower edge and upper sleeve portions, said inner wall being formed with an opening therein, and said upper sleeve portion being formed with a longitudinal slit therein; first closure means for opening and closing said opening in said inner wall; and second closure'means for closing and opening said slit, whereby when said slit is open the hand of the wearer may be inserted through said upper sleeve portion downwardly, so as to be surrounded and protected by said bell-shaped container, and said container may be carried by the wearer upon closing of said slit in said upper sleeve portion with the latter fitting about the wrist of the wearer.

Claims (1)

1. AS A WEARING APPAREL ACCESSORY ADAPTED TO ENCLOSE ARTICLES TO BE PROTECTED AND SIMULTANEOUSLY TO PROTECT THE HAND OF A PERSON CARRYING SAID ACCESSORY, IN COMBINATION, A BELL-SHAPED FLEXIBLE CONTAINER HAVING A LOWER ANNULAR EDGE PORTION OF LARGER DIAMETER AND AN UPPER ANNULAR SLEEVE PORTION OF SMALLER DIAMETER AND INCLUDING AN ANNULAR FLEXIBLE OUTER WALL AND AN ANNULAR FLEXIBLE INNER WALL, SAID OUTER AND INNER WALLS BEING SUPERIMPOSED UPON EACH OTHER SO AS TO DEFINE A SUBSTANTIALLY BELL-SHAPED STORAGE SPACE THEREBETWEEN AND BEING JOINED AT SAID LOWER EDGE AND UPPER SLEEVE PORTIONS, SAID INNER WALL BEING FORMED WITH AN OPENING THEREIN, AND SAID UPPER SLEEVE PORTION BEING FORMED WITH A LONGITUDINAL SLIT THEREIN; FIRST CLOSURE MEANS FOR OPENING AND CLOSING SAID OPENING IN SAID INNER WALL; AND SECOND CLOSURE MEANS FOR CLOSING AND OPENING SAID SLIT, WHEREBY WHEN SAID SLIT IS OPEN THE HAND OF THE WEARER MAY BE INSERTED THROUGH SAID UPPER SLEEVE PORTION DOWNWARDLY, SO AS TO BE SURROUNDED AND PROTECTED BY SAID BELL-SHAPED CONTAINER, AND SAID CONTAINER MAY BE CARRIED BY THE WEARER UPON CLOSING OF SAID SLIT IN SAID UPPER SLEEVE PORTION WITH THE LATTER FITTING ABOUT THE WRIST OF THE WEARER.
