To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL GIER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mount Angel, in the county of Marion and tate of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe- Shields, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to stove pipe shields, and has reference more particularly to a device of this class which comprises a plurality of protective sections, and means for assembling and mounting the sections in posltion.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and durable shield for use with stove pipes and the like, which serves to protect adjacent walls, building trim, furniture and other structures from injury by the heat emanating from the stove pipe or other similar element with which the shield is employed, which can be readily mounted in position and as readily taken down, which comprises a plurality of interchangeable sections, which may be. of any desired number, and which requires no structural change in or addition to the stove pipe or other element with which it is employed.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a stove pipe having an embodiment of my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view showing one of the members for assembling and mounting the sections in place; Fig. 3 is an enlarged,
transverse section on the line 33 of Fig.
1; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary, perspective view showing certain of the details of construction of the lower and upper corners of the shield sections which come together, and Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4:, showing the inner side of the members.
Before proceeding to a more detailed explanation of my invention it should be clearly understood that while I have for want of a better term described the device as a stove pipe shield, and while it is par.
tieularly useful in connection with stove plpes or smoke flues of ordinary heating or cookmg stoves, it can also be advantageously employed with other elements which, owing to the fact that they radiate heat, are liable to injure adjacent structures. For example, the shield could be used with hot air or steam plpes. It will be readily appreciated that if a stove pipe or the like is positioned close to a painted wall, to hangings or to woodwork, etc., there is danger of injury to the adjacent structures, as they may be blistered, discolored, or even ignited.
My invention provides a shield which can be associated with a stove pipe and interposed between it and the adjacent structure to guard the latter from the heat radiated by the stove pipe.
The shield comprises a plurality of sections and means for readily assembling them and holding them in place, as will be pointed out hereinafter.
It is not new to provide a protective guard or shield between the heated member and the adjacent structure, but my shield is novel in that it consists of sections which can be readily assembled or taken down, and which may be of any desired number.
Certain of the details of construction shown for example herewith, form no part of the invention and can be varied in accordance with individual preference and special conditions without departing from the underlying spirit of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have shown for example, a portion of a stove 10 having a stove pipe or smoke flue 11 of conventional form. Mounted upon the stove pipe at suitable intervals, I provide annular collars 12 fashioned from wire or like material and comprising two .substantially semicircular members 13 and 14:. The former has one end downwardly and laterally offset to form a socket 15, and beyond the socket is laterally extended to provide an arm 16 having at the extremity a finger 17. The latter is first downwardly bent, and then upwardly disposed beyond the arm .16. At the opposite end, the member 13 is laterally disposed to prov de an arm 18 provided at the extremity with a finger 19 corresponding to the element 17. The member 14: is, intermediate its ends, twisted into an eye 20 of rounded form, which is extended laterally, and substantially in the plane of the member. At one end the member 14 is creased or decreased, and after it has been suitably positioned upon the stove pipe can be securely clamped in place by tightening the nut.
The shield comprises a plurality of sections 23 fashioned from sheet metal or other suitable material, for example from asbestos board, fiber, or asbestos lined sheet metal and preferably of rounded or semicylindrical form. Each section adjacent to each edge and near the upper end, is provided with a hole 2% and is formed on the outside and inside with grooves or channels 25 and 26, leading, respectively from the hole 2a to the upper edge, and from the opening, diagonally, to the lateral edge. The lateral edges of the sections, for the purpose of stiffening them, may be turned back upon the sections. The lowermost section 27 has in addition to the holes 24 and the grooves 25 and 26, openings 28 near the lateral edges, and adjacent to the lower portion of the section. In addition, it has diagonally disposed grooves 29 leading from the openings 28 to the lateral edges. Each section 23 has at the lower edge and adjacent to the lateral edges, a groove 30 extend ing a comparatively small distance upwardly from the lower edge, and adjacent to each lateral edge and forming a bulge 30.
The supporting members formed by the collars 12 have the fingers 17 and 19 downwardly offset as has already been described, to form the seats 31 upon which the lower edges of the sections 28 rest when the latter are mounted in place. Each section is positioned with its lower edge supported by the fingers of one of the members 12 and held at its upper portion by the next higher supporting member, the fingers of which are disposed through the openings 2st and received in the grooves '25. Owing to the vertical and diagonal grooves being on opposite sides of the sections, the metal at the openings will be bent in opposite directions, so that when the fingers are bent laterally and engaged in the diagonal grooves, the openings will be substantially in alinement with the direction of the fingers, so that the fingers readily enter the openings. It will thus be seen that the diagonal grooves 26 and 29 facilitate the mounting and dismounting of the sections. The lower section 27, instead of being supported by its lower edge on the fingers 17 and 19, is provided with openings 28 similar to openings 24 engaging the fingers, while the lower edge of the said section is resting on the top of the stove. It will be understood that the upper end of each section is received within the lower end of the next higher section. The members thus serve the dual purpose of supporting the sections and holding them in their assembled relation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A device of the class described, comprising a plurality of protective sections, and members adapted to be removably secured to a stove pipe or the like, said members having parts adapted to support said sections at the lower edges thereof and to engage others of said sections at the upper ends thereof, whereby said sections are supported and held assembled with their upper and lower ends respectively, overlapping.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a plurality of protective sections having holes near the upper ends, and annular members clamped upon a stove pipe or the like, and each having laterally disposed parts each provided with a finger, said parts serving to support said sections at the lower ends thereof, and said fingers being adapted to enter the said holes of said sections to hold them in position.
3. A device of the class described comprising a plurality of protective sections having holes near the upper end, and annular members adapted to be clamped upon a stove pipe or the like, and each having laterally disposed parts each provided with a finger, said parts serving to support said sections at the lower ends thereof, said fingers being adapted to enter the said holes of said sections to hold them in position, and said sect-ions having grooves extending diagonally from said holes to each side of said sections to guide said fingers when entering into said holes and to facilitate the mounting of the lower ends of said sections upon said parts.
4. A device of the class described, comprising a plurality of protective sections of rounded cross-section, and members adapted to be adjustably and removably mounted upon a stove pipe or the like, said members having parts adapted to support said sections and hold the same in assembled relation, each of said members furthermore, having intermediate said parts an extension engaging one of said sections intermediate the edges of said section.
5. In a device of the class described, a supporting and assembling member comprising a part having the ends laterally disposed and formed into supporting fingers, one of said ends having an offset constituting a socket, the other of said parts having one end secured to said other part at the end thereof remote from said socket,
said other part having the opposite end received in said socket and provided With means for varying the compass of said member.
6. In a device of the class described, a supporting and assembling member comprising a part having the ends laterally disposed and formed into supporting fingers, one of said ends having an offset constituting a socket the other of said parts having one end secured to said other part at the end thereof remote from said socket,
said other part having the opposite end received in said socket and provided With means for varying the compass of said memher, said second part, intermediate its ends, being formed into a substantially radial extension for the purpose specified.
