Description

J. R. VALLIANT.
IGNITING DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED Anejzz, 1913.
1,093,217. Patented Apr. 14, 1914.
0 3 Fir/Zia??? IGNITING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES R. VALLIANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlantic City, in the county of Atlantic, State of New Jersey, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Igniting Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to im provements in igniting devices for gas burners, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character that the same may be easily and quickly applied to the usual gas burner tube.
A further object of the invention is to so construct a device of this character that when operated the spark will be produced to ignite the gas flowing from the burner tip.
lVith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4- is a detail perspective view of the disk.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a burner tube having inserted in its upper end the lava tip 2, both of which are of the usual construction. The vertical arm 3 is connected to the burner tube 1 by band clamps 4:, said arm having secured thereto a tube 5, the bottom of which is provided with a removable cap 6 so that the spring 7 may be readily placed in the tube and the tension thereof regulated upon ro tation of the cap 6 owing to its threaded connection with the tube.
Pivotally connected to the arm 3 is one end of the lever 8 having pivotally connected intermediate its end the lower end of the rack bar 9, said rack bar being in mesh with the pinion 10 which is journaled on the Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 786,051.
shaft 11 mounted transversely of the upper end of the tube 5. To hold the rack bar 9 in mesh with the pinion 10 the upper end of the tube 5 is provided with a guide 12. A steel disk 13 is also journaled upon the shaft 11 and has one face thereof provided with ratchets 14L which are adapted to be intermittently engaged by the radial tongue 15 formed upon the resilient washer 16, said washer being fixed to one face of the pinion 10 so as to rotate therewith, whereby when the pinion is actuated, the disk 18 will be rotated and in the same direction at all times owing to the engagement of the ratchets let and tongue 15.
The disk 18 is prevented from rotating in a reverse direction by the friction occasioned by the pyrophoric element 17 which has its upper end bearing against the periphery thereof, said element having its lower end engaged in the tube 5 and held in yielding contact with the periphery of the disk by the coil spring 7. The periphery of the disk 13 is roughened, as at 18, so that when the same is rotated a spark will be created at its point of contact with the pyrophoric element 17, which spark ignites the gas flowing from the tip 2. A spring 19 is suitably connected to the arm 3 and lever 8 and serves to automatically return the lever to its normal position after the chain 20 has been pulled to rock the same, said chain being connected to one end of the lever.
hat is claimed is The combination with a gas burner, of an arm clamped thereto, a tube carried by the arm, a spring actuated lever having one end pivoted to the arm, a shaft supported by the upper end of the tube, a steel disk rotatably mounted upon the shaft and having one of its faces provided with ratchet teeth, a pinion supported by said shaft, a resilient washer interposed between the disk and pinion and fixed to the latter, said washer having a tongue for intermittently engaging said ratchet teeth. to rotate the disk in one direction only, a guide carried by the tube, a rack bar slidably engaging the guide and in mesh with the pinion, said point of yielding engagement of its peraek bar having its lower end pivot-ally conriphery and the pyrophoric element. 7 10 nected to said lever, a spring mounted in the In testimony whereof, I affix my signatube, a pyrophoric element having its lower ture, in the presence of two witnesses.
