GAS-IGNITER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 9, 1913.
Application filed July 1, 1913. Serial No. 776,876.
To all whom it may concern: p
Be it knownthat I, JOSEPH L. DUCHARME, a subject of the King of England, residing at Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Igniters, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention has relation to gas igniters and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide in combination with a gas fixture including a valve, a burner and a pipe connecting the two, an igniter which is adapted to be operated from the, stem of the valve when the same is turned for the purpose of permitting the gas to flow from the supply pipe to the burner whereby the gas is automatically ignitedat the burner.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a top plan view of the igniter. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detailedview of the same showing parts in section.
The fixture to which the 'igniter is applied includes a casting having a burner portion 1, pipe portion 2 and a bracket 3. A valve 4 is connected with the outer end of the pipe portion 2 and a service pipe 5 connects with the said valve. The stem 6 of the valve is provided with a handle 7 in which is slidably mounted a spring pressed detent 8. A lever 9 is pivoted upon the casing of the valve. 4 or upon the upper portion-of the stem thereof immediately 7, and the outer end portion of thesaid lever projects acrossthe path of mo, ement of the is turned to move the stem of the valve from a closed to an open position. A-stop 10 is mounted upon the service pipe 5 and the said stop is so positioned as to cause the detent 8 to move lever 9 when the handle and the lever are swung toward the said stop so that the lever is released from the handle. An arm 11 is provided upon the lever 9and one end ofa rod 12 is pivoted to the said arm and the other end of the said rod is pivoted to a gear wheel journaled at the side of the pipe portion 2. One end of a spring 14 is connected with the wheel 13 preferably at the point of pivotal connection between the rod 12 and the said wheel and the other end of the said spring 14 is fixed to the burner whereby gas below the handle the upper end of the spring 14 is under tension with a tendency to lower the rod 12 toward the burner port'ion. Therefore when the free end of the handle 7 is swung away from the burner portion 1 the detent 8 engages the lever 9 and swings the free end thereof toward the stop 10. This movement on the part of the handle 7 turns the stem 6 into open position may flow from the service pipe 5 through the pipe portion 2 to the burner portion 1. At the same time the movement of the lever 9 carrim with it the arm 11 as the parts encounter the stop 10 and the lever 9 is released the tension of the spring 14 draws the rod 12 back to its initial position and partially rotates the wheel'13 in opposite direction to that just above stated. A relatively small gear wheel 15 is journaled upon a pin 16 carried by the burner portion 1 and meshes with the gear-wheel 13. The pin 16 carries at its side a spring pawl 17. A wheel or disk 18 is loosely journaled upon the pin 16 adjacent the gear wheel 15 and is provided at its side with ratchet teeth 19 which are adapted to he engaged by the pawl 17.
The wheel or disk 18 is provided upon its periphery with file teeth 20. A guide 21 is carried by the bracket 3 immediately above the Wheel or disk 18 and a spark producing element 22 is slidably heldin the guide 21. The lower end of the said sparking element rests upon the periphery of the wheel 18. flat spring 23 is secured at one end by means of a screw 24 through the bracket 3 and at its other end portion bears against sparking element 22 and serves to hold the said element down hercfore it will be seen that when the rod 12 is moved from the burner portion 1 and the wheel 13 is partially rotated the gear wheel 15 isrotated and the pawl 17 carried thereby engages the ratchet teeth 19 at the side of the wheel'or disk 18' which is also rotated upon the pin 16.
thrown toward the burner portion 1. has much as the gas has been admitted to the said burner portion the gas is ignited by the said sparks. When the wheel 13 partially portion 1 of the casting. The i rotates in an opposite direction the pawl 17 moves along the ratehet teeth 19 and the wheel or disk 18 remains at a state of rest.
Having described the invention what is claimed is: v
In combination with a fixture including a burner portion and a pipe; a valve connected to the pipe and adapted to be connected with a service pipe, a spring pressed detent carried by a'movable part of the valve, a lever fulcrumed upon the valve and extending across the path of movement of the detent, means for releasing the lever from the detent when the valve is opened, a bracket carried by the first mentioned pipe and provided with a de, a sparking element mov'ably mounted within the guide a spring pressing upon said element, a wheel journaled at the burner and provided upon its periphery with file teeth which engage the sparking element,v a train of gear wheels one of which is provided with means for engagement with the first mentioned wheel, a rod pivotally connected with said lever and with one of said gear wheels, a return spring for holding the last mentioned gear wheel in a normal position.
In testimon whereof I aflin my signature in presence '0 two witnesses.
