VApplication led August 2, 1913.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 7, 1914.
Serial No. 782,630.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, OLoF HJELKREM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in shoes and more particularly to means for Ventilating shoes.
The object of my improvement is to provide a simple and effective device of the character mentioned which will cause ventilation of shoes while being worn.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side view of a shoe equipped with Ventilating means embodying my invention, Fig. 2, is an enlarged section taken on line 2-2 in Fig. 1, Fig. 3, is an enlarged view of a closure used in the construction and Fig. 4 is a different form of closure used in the construction.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a shoe of conventional construction having an upper l and a lower portion 2. In the upper 1 I provide perforations 3 in which are secured eyelets 4. The perforations 3 and eye- ,lets 4 are preferably fixed in the upper 1, as
illustrated in Fig. 1 but when so desired may be placed in the lower portion 2. All of the eyelets 4 are of similar form and construction so that the description of one will sufice for all. Formed in the central portion of the eyelet 4 is an annular rib 5 struck up therein forming an annular groove 6 on its inner side. The ends of the eyelet 4 are provided with iianges 7 and 8, the flange 7 serving to bind the lining 9 of the shoe firmly against one side of the rib 5 and the flange 8, which is on the outside of the shoe rmly binds the outer wall 10 of the shoe firmly against the other side of the rib 5 effectively binding the eyelet 4 in the shoe.
In hot weather it is designed to leave the eyelets 4 entirely open, but in cold weather, it is desirable to close said eyelets. For this purpose, I provide closures 11 which are of a resilient material such as india rubber, or india rubber composition which will yield and be easily adjusted to and removed from, the eyelet 4. When only a slight ventilation is necessary, such as in moderate weather, it is desirable to provide smaller openings than the opening' in the eyelets 4, and to accomplish this, I provide closures l2 with openings 13 therein. The o-penings 13 may be made of desired sizes. The closures 11 and l2 are interchangeable and of similar construction.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modiiications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
I-Iaving described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, a shoe having an outer wall and a lining with Ventilating perforations therethrough; and an eyelet in each of said perforations having an annular rib intermediate its ends disposed between said outer wall and said lining and iianges at its ends clamping said outer wall and said lining against said annular rib, substantially as described.
2. In combination, a shoe having an outer wall and a lining with Ventilating perforations therethrough; an eyelet in each of said perforations having an annular rib intermediate its ends disposed between said outer wall and said lining and flanges at its ends clamping said outer wall and said lining against said annular rib, the inner side of said annular rib being provided with an annular groove; and a removable closure in said annular groove, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OLOF IIJELKREM.
