FREDERICK V. ETTLINGER, OF IVEST BRIGHTON, NEW YORK.
BOX-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,453, dated June '7, 1892.
Application filed January 30, 1892. Serial No. 419,756. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK V. ETT- LINGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vest Brighton, in the county of Richmond, State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box- Oovers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in jewelry-boxes; and the object of my invention is -to provide a new and improved jewelry-box the cover of which is finished in such a manner as to make the name of the dealer selling the jewelry or the manufacturer of the same very conspicuous, at the same time rendering the appearance of the box very handsome.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improved jewelry box. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view on theline 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig.3 isaplan view of the under side of the top plate of the cover. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the said top plate on line I 4 of Fig. 3. Fig.5 is a plan view of the body, and Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same on line 6 6 of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The box A is made in any well-known manner and is provided with a cover B, said box and cover being both made of pasteboard or similar material. the side pieces a, the top plate 5, the reinforcing'plate d, and the usual lining a, as provided in all jewelry-boxes. The top plate I) of the cover is provided with an opening 0, which is made oval, elliptical, elongated, or of similar shape. To the under side of said top plate a piece of satin D is applied in such a manner that the finished side of said satin appears in the opening 0. A pad E of the same shape as the opening 0 and composed of a layer f of'cotton fleece, cotton-batting,
wool, or like material secured on the oval' base-plate g is placed against the under side of the piece of satin D in such a manner as The cover is composed of to press said satin D up through the opening 0, so as to form a raised cushion on the upper face of the top plate I) of the cover, the height of said cushion gradually increasing from the edges toward the center. Previously to applying the piece of satin D to the under side of the top I) of the cover the name of the firm selling or manufacturing the jewelry, &c., can be printed or embossed on said piece of satin, as shown by the letters X Y in Fig. 1; or said name or other ornamentation can be produced on the satin by handpainting, decalcomanie, or any other suitable manner.
For the purpose of holding the pad E in place the reinforcing-plate cl is glued to the under side of the top plate I) of the cover. The raised satin piece on the face of the cover enhances the appearance of the same and also permits of producing the name of the dealer or manufacturer in a more conspicuous manner.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with a jewelry-box cover having an opening, of a piece of satin placed in said opening, which satin bears an inscription on its face on that part within the opening, the edges of said piece of satin being glued to the under side of the top plate of the cover, a pad inserted in the opening of the cover below the piece of satin and pressing said satin upward slightly through said opening, and a reinforcing-plate on the under side of the top plate of the cover for the purpose of holding the pad in place, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myinvention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK V. ETTLINGER.
