NUT-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 3, 1911. Serial No. 636,563.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CONRAD C. BUTTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to nut locks and provides means whereby a nut may be locked against movement after the same has been screwed upon a bolt.
An object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive nut lock constructed of a single piece of metal.
A further object of this invention is to provide a nut lock which may be easily unlocked when it is desired.
With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention reference will be had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters denote like or corresponding parts through the several views and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrative of an application of one form of my invention to a nut and bolt. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a blank form of nut lock. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of my nut lock. Fig. 4: is a perspective View of my nut lock, shown detached from the nut and bolt.
In the drawings I have shown a bolt 1 having the usual head portion 2 formed thereon. Formed upon the other end of the bolt 1 are the screw threads 3. Cut within one end of the bolt 1 is a longitudinal groove 4 which is preferably V shaped in cross section. The locking means which I provide comprises a section of sheet metal or the like as shown at 5 which has the opening 6 formed therein. Formed on one edge of the opening 6 is a tongue or lip portion 7 which when in operation engages the longitudinal groove 4 which is formed in a mold. Cut near one end of the body portion 5 are the slits 8. One end of the body portion 5 is preferably made smaller than the other end so when the same is folded on the dotted lines as shown in Fig. 2 the portion 9 forms a suitable locking member for a nut. The other sections 10 are adapted to be bent backwardly so as to engage a suitable support and keep the portion 9 from being bent downwardly.
It will be seen from the foregoing that when the body portion 5 is inserted over the end of the bolt and the tongue portion 7 inserted into the longitudinal groove the body portion will be fast upon the end of said bolt. However when the portion 9 is bent upwardly as shown in Fig. 1 and the sections 10 bent baokwardly the nut may be securely looked upon the end of said bolt.
It will be seen from the foregoing disclosure that the nut lock described therein is very simple and that it is efficient and inexpensive to manufacture and it is thought that the advantages and novel features of the same will be readily appreciated.
I desire it to be understood that 1 may make slight changes in the construction without deviating from the spirit of my invention provided such changes fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
It will be seen that I have provided a one piece washer having a tongue 7, for pre venting the rotation of the washer on the bolt, and a portion 9, engaging the nut to prevent rotation of the same, the portion 9, having two members 10, for bracing such portion 9, to maintain engagement thereof with the nut.
Having thus fully described by invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1, In a nut look, a bolt and a washer nonrotatably connected with each other, a nut on the bolt for clamping the material to be held, and said washer having an integral strut portion in abutting relation against the nut and the material to be held and disposed in a manner to take strains compressively, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, a bolt having a longitudinal groove formed therein, a section of sheet material disposed over the end of said bolt having an integral tongue projected into said groove, a nut turned on said bolt said nut adapted to engage said section of material, a portion of said sheet material being bent upwardly to engage one side of said nut, and means formed integral with said upwardly bent portion and bent baokwardly, whereby said upwardly bent portion may be braced and held into engagement with said nut for the purpose described.
3. In a nut lock of the character described, the combination of a longitudinally portion with the nut, substantially as degrooved bolt, a nut therefor and a one-piece scribed.
