JOSEPH W. DIXON AND JOHN D. DEVINE, OF OONNELLSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
DOUBLE-HEADED BOLT AND LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,913, dated May 12, 1903. Application filed May 27, 1902. serial No. 109,205. (No model.)
1'0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH W. DIXON and JOHN D. DEVINE, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Oonnellsville, in the 5 county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Headed Bolts and Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the ac- IO companying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bolt-locks, and relates more particularly to a double-headed bolt and lock.
The object of the present invention is to provide a threadless bolt and also dispense with the use of a nut.
Our present invention further con templates to provide a device of the above-described class that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient in its use.
- With the above and other objects in View 2 the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to theaccompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure l is a plan view of our improved bolt and lock. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the bolt. Fig. 4 is a like view of the washer.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 represents the piece of material, or it may be two or three pieces of material that are to be locked together by means of our improved bolt and lock, and 2 represents a bolt carrying a small head 3 and a largehead 4, said' bolt having also formed therein a contracted neck or shank portion 5. The reference-numeral 6 represents a washer, the central opening 7 of which is suificiently large to pass over the smaller head 13 of the bolt.
8 represents a locking-plate having its cention bent outwardly, as at 11. A circular opening 9 is formed in the plate to one side of the said central portion which communioates with a slot 10, formed in the outwardlybent portion'of the plate. Said locking-plate 5 '5 is preferably constructed of spring-steel. The operation of our improved bolt-look is as follows: The. bolt is inserted through the raised portion 11 will form a locking engagement'that will prevent the bolt from turning or jarring loose.
When it is desired to remove the bolt, the locking-plate is operated in the reverse direction, when the bolt may be easily removed after the locking-plate is disengaged from the head 4 of the bolt.
The many advantages obtained by the use of our improved device will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction with out departing from the general spirit of our invention.
. Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Lettom Patent, is ,7
1. In a bolt-lock, the combination with a double-headed bolt, of a resilient lockingplate in engagement with one of the heads of said bolt, said plate having flat end portions, and an outwardly curved central portion formed with a longitudinal slot, and a-washer arranged in the outwardly-curved portion of the said plate for preventing the accidental displacement thereof, substantially as described. I
2. In a bolt-lock, the combination with a double-headed bolt, of a resilient lockingplate provided with an outwardly-curved central portion, said outwardly-curved portion being slotted to receive one of the heads of the said bolt, and a washer encirclingthe said/ bolt, said washer having its edges beveled and being arranged in the outwardly-curved portion of the said looking-plate.
3. In a bolt-lock, the combination of a bolt provided at each end with a head, said heads being of different diameters, a locking-plate provided with an outwardly-curved portion having a longitudinal slot terminating in an enlarged circular opening in one end of the plate, and a Washer encircling the bolt, and normally in engagement with the curved portion of the said plate, substantially as described.
4:. In abolt-lock, the combination of a bolt having a head, an engaging means at the end opposite to the said head, a resilient lookingplate in engagement with the said means, said plate being provided intermediate its ends with an outwardly-curved portion, and a-Washer arranged in the outwardly-curved portion, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof We affix our signatures in the presence of two Witnesses.
