Description
Patented Feb. l3, I900. S. HARRELL.
N U T L 0 C K.
(Application filed Oct. 18, 1899.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMPSON HARRELL, OF WHIGHAM, GEORGIA.
NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,500, dated February 13, 1900.
A li ti fil d October 18, 1899- Serial No. 733,958. (No model.)
T0 to whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, SAMPSON HARRELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whigham, in the cbunty of Decatur and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain novel improvements in nut-locks as applied to the meeting ends of railroad-rails and the object of the invention is to provide asafe and positive lock for the bolts connecting the fishplates at these joints. v
To this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several elements of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved nut-lock as it appears in use. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the members of the locknut separated.
1 1 denote the bolts, and 2 2 the nuts.
3 denotes a tie-bar which is provided with eyes 3 3 to receive the bolts, and its position is between the fish-plate and the nuts, as shown. This tie-bar is also formed with lateral studs 3 3 which in turn are formed with slots 3 3 to receive the taper-keys 4 4.
5 denotes the keeper, and it is formed with sockets 5 5 (which may be rectangular or polygonal to conform to the shape of the nuts, which they encompass) and with a tailpiece 6, provided with an orifice 6. The central ject.
the distance between the nut-sockets 5 5 to be increased or diminished to conform to the distance between the bolts, and when this distance does not conform to the keeper a very convenient way is to place the end socket 5 over a nut and insert the end of a crowbar in the orifice 6 and by using the crowbar as a lever increase or diminish the distance be tween the said sockets until they do conform to the relative position of the nuts.
The manner of applying and removing th look, as well as its function, will be readily understood by reference to the drawings, taken in connection with this specification.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me;
but many changes in the details might bemade within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claim at the end of this specification.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
. The combination with the meeting ends of the rails and the headed and threaded bolts seated therein; of the tie-bar 3 provided with the eyes 3 3 resting against the webs of said meeting rail ends and formed with the lateral studs 3 3 provided with slots 3 3 the keeper 5 formed with the sockets 5 5 and the tailpiece 6 having an orifice 6, the central portion of said keeper 5 being bent out of plane to form the slotted bow 5 5 and the taperkeys 4 4 fitted to the slots 3 3 substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit nesses.
SAMPSON HARRELL.
