Description

vHENRY LARENCE, OF'NEW ORLEANS, yLOUISIANA.
Letters Patent No. 109,133, dated November 8, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-TIE RETAINERS.
.The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and niaking part o! the same.
To all whom it may concern Y Beit known that I, HENRY LAURENCE, of the city of New Orleans, inthe parish of Orleans and State-of Louisiana, have invented a new and` nsei'ul Improvement in vCravat or Neck-Tie Retainers, ot' which the following is a full, clear, and lexact description, vreferenee being had to the accompanying drawing of the same, which makes a part of this specification, and in which- 'Figure l represents the parts ofthe neektie re- 'tainer before being connected.4
Figure 2 represents the parts of the retainer connected and in a position ready for use.
My invention relates to the formation of cravat or neck-tie retainers for turn-down collars andv` It consistsin constructing the tuck-piece or retainer of twoseparate parts or' plates hinged or pivoted together and provided with an elastic connection, so
that the wings which underlie the turned-down portion ot' the collar will Hex and thus be more easily manipulated in applying it, reducing the strain on the button of the neck-band ot'the shirt4 while adjusting the retainer.
In the accompanying `drawing the foundation or tuckepie'ce is composed ot' two separate plates, ot' any suitable material.
Each parthas a skeleton wing, A A, made to lit the curve of the collar, and a tongue, B, which laps over the other, and pivoted together so asfto form a hinge, a, upon whioh'each partor wing. A. is free to ilex so as to bring the inner upper ends b of the wings together and allow of' their separation.
The parts thus connected have the proper shape upon which to form the cravat or neck-tie.
The inner ends b of the wings are iliade to abut against each other', and are held in such position by an elastic connection, O, secured to each by grooves, e, or tongues, d, so as to admit the wings' to open to facilitate their adjustment under the turned-down portion of the collar, and be drawn and held together when so adjusted, as shown in g. 2.
To the inner side ofthe hinged ears B of the retainer, I attach, by means of hooks e, or other device, an elastic cord or band, D, so as to leave a space, g, between its lower portion'and the ears B, and thus form a loop through which the fabric of the ornamental bow is passed in forming it into any desired tasteful style around the retainer, and thus hold it in place. l
This holding loop or cord D also rorms the means ot' attachment for a ling or loop, i, by which the retainer is fastened to the button of the shirt-neck band.
This button-ring or loop t', may he of any suitable material, and the elastic` loop D, for securing the fah-` ric to the retainer, is widened by its connection with the ears B'to readily insert through it the material for the how.
Theelastie hands or cords are so attached as to allow them to he easily removed and replaced by others when necessary.
Neck-tie retainers, as heretofore constructed, have been found more or less defective iu not affording a proper degree ot" elasticity to the parts which underlie the collar and facility for opening the supporting and holding wings to apply themY under the collar; and in these and other respects my improvements differ es sentially from the neck-tie retainers heretofore patented.
Having thus described my invention,
I claiml. A cravat or neck-tie retainer made of separate plates, A B A B, hinged together and connected by au elastic loop, C, so as to admit of flexion in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
2. A cravat or neck-tie retainer hinged as described, in combination with the elastic loop D, which secures the how fabric and forms a support for the button-ring Ii, as herein shown and described.
' HENRY LAURENCE.
