HENRY G. FISK AND THOMAS J. FLAGG, 'OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 73,790, dated January 28, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-TIES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAYOOIfTGERN:
Beit known that we, HENRY G. FIsK and'lnonins J. FLAce, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mcns Scarfs; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which wit! e nahlc others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective under side view of our improved scarf, part of the knot being cutaway to show the construction. I
' Figure 2 is a cross-section of thesame, taken through the line :v :v, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Our invention has for its object to furnish an improved scarf, so constructed that it may be worn with a standing or tui'neldown collar, that it will fitall sizes of necks, and may be secured in place without hooks and eyes, buttons, or any other fastening; audit consists in forming an el asligpggketwithin the manufactured knot, for receiving and securing the free end of the scarf, and in securing the scarf about the neck by passing its free end through the elastic pocket and under the apron, so as to be entirely concealed from View, the whole being constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the manufactured knot, the form or style of which is immaterial, provided it is so formed as to have a passage-way through it for the passage of the free end of the partB of the scarf that passes around the neck. The knob should be made river a band or foundation of sufficient stiffness to keep the knot in proper form. The interior of the knot A should be padded or stuffed, so as to leave sufiicient space for the passage of the end of the scarf B. The upper. part of the rear side of the knot A maybe sewed or otherwise formed, so as always to remain in the same position but the lower part of the said rear side is left unfasteued, and is held together by a rubber or other elastic strap, the ends of which are secured to the unfastened parts of the knot, thnsforming an elastic space or pocket within the knot, which will expand to-allow of the passage of the free end of the part3 of the scarf, and then contract to hold the scarf securely in place when adjusted to the neck of the wearer.
We do not wish to confine ourselves to the exact manner herein described for forming the elastic pocket, as it maybe formed in various ways, without departing from our invention, which is the formation of an elastic pocket within the knot A, which will expand to permit the scarf B to pass through, and contract to hold said scarf in place.
One end of the part B of the scarf is securely fastened to the interior of the knot A, and its other end is stifl'eued for a distance equal to or a little greater than thelcngth of the knot A, for convenience in passingthe end of said part through the elastic pocket in said knot. After passing through the knot A, the free end of the part B descends into and hangs in or under the apron C, so as to be entirely concealed from view, said end hanging down for a greater or less distance under said apron, accordingto the size of the neck about which the scarf is adjusted.
Having thus describedour invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is As a new article of manufacture, a scarf, constructed as described, consisting of the cylindrical knot A, to which the scarf Band apron C are attached, said knot provided with an elastic pocket, which expands to permit the scarfB topass through, and contracts to hold it in place, as herein shown and described.
HENRY G. FISK, T. J. FLAGG. Witnesses2' Jason GRAM,
FRED. 0. Jonas.
