Description
A. J. BAZBLBY. UNOOUPLING MECHANISM FOR CARS. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 1'4, 1911 1,090,591, I Patented Mar.17,1914L UNITED STATES PATENT orr cn ARTHUR J. BAZELEY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR 'IO, NATIONAL MALLE- ABLE OASTINGS' COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
UN COUPLING MECHANISM FOR CABS.
Specification of Iietters Patent. Patented Mar. 17,1914. Original application filed Kay 9, 1810, Serial No. 560,127. Divided and this 14,1911. Serial No. 649,336.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. BAZELEY, a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Uncoupling Mechanisms for Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-'- v Figure 1 is a side view of a coupler partly broken away and showing the application of my invention thereto; Fig. 2 is an end view of the coupler and uncoupling mechanism showni i1l*ig.1.' y The present application is a division of my pen ing application, Serial No. 560,127, filed May 9, 1910.
The invention has relation to uncou ling mechanism for railwa cars, and is designed to'provide means 0 simple and efiicient character for operating the lock-lifting and knuckle-throwing elements of a bottomoperating coupler. t
The nature of my invention will 'bebest understood by reference to the ,drawings which will now be described, it being pre mised, however, that various changes maybe made in the details of constructon and arrangement of the parts by those skilled in the art, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as defined in the claim.
In these drawings, the numeral 2 designates the end sill of the car, and 3 a'coupler head having the usual pivoted knuckle 4.
5 is a lever for operating the lock-lifting and knuckle-throwing elements of the coupler, and is preferablyof the character more fully described and claimed in my; ending application, Serial No. 539,258, filed Ianuary 21, 1910. This lever is pivoted at 6 .to lugs 7 depending from the bottom of the coupler, and extends. longitudinally and rearwardly below the coupler head, its rear end terminating in an upwardly extending finger or pusher portion 8, which is arran ed to eI.t-' gage and operate the lock-1i ing and knuckle-throwing elements of the coupler, as
and exact description,
ing from the under side of the coupler This actuatingmember extends transversely more fully described in said application. This lever is prevented from falling below its normal position by means'of the lug or projection 9, thereon, which engages the cooperating lug or projection 10 on one of the lugs 7. u I
r The numeral 11 designates an actuating member having a hooked end portion 12,
which pivotally engages an eye 13, deplendcad.
underneath the head through an eye 5 .of
the lever 5, and its free end. is connected by,
application filed September suitable means, such as the link and-clevis 14, with an uncoupling rod 15, which is supported in suitable bearings, (not shown) on: the end sill of the car. The rotation of the pulls on the link and uncoupling. rod 15 clevis 14;, thereby liftmg the actuating member 11 and raising the lever' 5, to operate the lock-lifting and knuckle-throwing elements 1'6. I
The invention provides means of simple 'and-efiicient character for operating the locklifting and knuckle-throwing elements of a bottom-operating coupler from the side of the car.
I'claim: In a car cou knuckle pivotal y connected to said coupler by means of pivot ears, lugs connected to one of said pivot ears, an arm pivoted to said lugs and extending rearwardly and 1ongitudinally of said coupler, said arm having a'neye therein intermediate its ends and becrate the coupler look, a
ing'adapted to o lever pivoted to t e guard arm of said coupler and extending transversely of said con ler of the M. o. B. type, a
pler andthrough the eye of said arm, said lever] being arranged so as to always act against the upper s de of said eye, and means to move said lever so as, to revolve said arm about its pivot to unlock'the cou ler.
In. testimony whereof, I have erunto set my hand,
ARTHUR J. 'BAZELEY. 'Witnessesi v HARRY E. ORR,
CHns'rER K. Bnooxs.
