UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEicE.
RALPH G. SHALLENBERGER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-COUPLING.
Application filed August 6, 1907.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known lthat I, RALPH G. SHALLEN- BERGER, of Pittsburg, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Car-Coupler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view partly broken away, showing a car coupler embodying my invention; 2 is a section on the line IIMII of Fig. 1 g and Fig. 3 is an end view of a portion of a car frame showing the coupler applied thereto` My invention has relation to car couplers, and is designed to provide a simple and efficient coupler capable of general use on cars, but more particularly designed for use on hot metal cars being so constructed that no hot metal can come in contact with the locking member to interfere with its operation.
The invention c onsists in the novel construction of the parts, including means for locking the coupler in engaged position, and for releasing the same.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 2 designates a chambered coupler head which is pivotally attached in any suitable manner to a draw-bar or head 3, which may also be of any suitable character.
4 is the knuckle which is pivoted within the head by the pin 5 upon which it swings from open to closed position.
6 designates a lock consisting of an arm or finger secured to a transverse shaft 6a journaled in the head and depending between the vertical edge 7 of the tail of the knuckle and the opposite wall 8 of a recess 9 formed in the rear wall of the coupler head, the wall 8 formin(r a thrust bearing for the locking arm or nger. The recess 9 is extended rearwardly and laterally at its upper portion, as indicated at 9a, so that when the locking finger or arm is turned upwardly into Specification of Letters Patent.

releasing position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, it may be moved laterally sufficiently to rest sli htly on the outer surface of the tail of the nuckle as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. In this position, it is held in lock-setting position, and will be jarred or dropped into locking position by the act of coupling.
The locking arm of Fig. 6 may be operated by extending the shaft 6a to one side of the car,`or a separate operating crank 10 may be provided, as shown in Fig. 3, with its end arranged to engage the bent end portion 6b of the shaft 6a. 1
The advantages of my invention result from the simplicity of the parts and from the manner in which the coupling knuckle is securely held in coupling position; also in the means whereby the locking member may be held in lock-setting position. The top of the coupler head being entirely closed, no hot metal or slag can enter to interfere with the operation of the knuckle and lock.
vWhat I claim is In a car cou ler, a chambered coupler head, a pivotal lknuckle, a shaft journaled horizontally in said head above the plane of movement of the knuckle, and a locking member carried by said shaft and depending into the chamber of the head, the inner wall of said chamber being cut away to permit the locking member to swing upwardly and rearwardly, and also to move laterally into locksetting position and the locking member being laterally movable in to the cut-away portion of the chamber when said member is swung upwardly and rearwardly, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
