To CLZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD P. EASTWICIK, Jr., of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a' new and useful Improvement in Car-Couplers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in car-couplers, especially that class of carcouplers provided with knuckle connectinglinks, and has for its object to provide a means whereby the strain on the draw-head caused by a buffing blow is made much less than is usual in couplers of this type, and also to provide a means whereby the lockingpin may be raised from the side of the car in a simple, expeditious, and convenient manner.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts and the special construction of the knuckles and draw-head, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming-a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 a perspective view of the coupler and device for elevating the pin applied to a car. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the knuckle, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the draw-head.
The prime object of the invention is to pro vide a stop for taking the buffing strain, and to so locate the said stop that its bearing side will be coincident, or approximately so, with .a radial line from the center of revolution of the knuckle, and wherein the distance of the stop from the said center of revolution is made as great as practicable.
I11 couplers of this type heretofore constructed, the stop receiving the buffing strain has been located so near the center of revolution of the knuckle that the buffing strain on the end of the knuckle has been greatly multiplied at this point, thus causing a great and unnecessary strain on the draw-heads.
In carrying out the invention the drawhead 10 is essentially hollow, and I HfOYlLlQLl with a curved front face, ll, and a horn, 12, at one sideof said face, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The knuckle 1 3 is held to laterally revolve within the draw-head, and consists of an outer curved locking-section, 14:, from the inner face of which the revolving or body section 15 is projected, curved in a direction opposite to the curvature of the said lockingsection. The face of the locking-section from which the body-section is projected is preferably straight and made to extend above and below the latter section, as best shownin Fig.
The bod y-section is entered into the drawhead at one side through an opening in the front, and ,is revolved therein by'means of cylindrical shoulders 16, integral with the top and bottom, closely fitted in corresponding grooves formed, respectively, in the top and bottom walls of the draw-head, thereby constituting a channel guiding the movement of said knuckle. Sufficient play only is allowed the body of the knuckle or link to admit of easy lateral revolution.
A wing, 17, is formed integral with, the circular vertical side of the bod y-section 15 near the inner end and about midwaybctwccn the top and bottom. The wing 17 extends horizontally from the body or at a right angle thereto, and is provided with a horizontal recess, 18, extending from the inner end longitudin all y to a point near the outer end, whereby a lengthy chamber is formed between the top and bottom of the wing, open at one end and closed at the other, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The wing is also provided with a lug, 19 upon the upper face at the inner end,whereby the outward movement of the knuckle is limited.
A locking pin, 20, is passed downward through the d raw-head and adapted to be supported in an elevated position by the knucklewing 17, as fully described in aprior application, filed September 19, 1.888, SerialiNo. 285,793, in which application the special c011- struction of the body of the knuckle and also the peculiar arrangement of the draw-head to receive the said body-section is set forth and claimed. The recess 18 in the wing of the knuckle is adapted to receive a stop, 21, integral with the inner rear wall of the drawhead, which stop, as illustrated in Fig. 3, consists of a lug extending horizontally within the draw-head projecting within the said winged recess, one face of the lugs being preferably Ice beveled, as at 22, to have a firm bearing against the end wall of the recess when the outer or looking section of the knuckle is in engagement with the equivalent section of an least interfere with the free manipulation of the knuckle.
In Fig. 1 I have illustrated a simple, convenient, and effective means of elevating the locking-pin from the side of the car, the prime object of the construction set forth being to provide a device which will ride with the draw-head and be in position at all times to engage with the bottom of the pin.
To that end .I fulcrum an elbow or angled lever, 24, beneath the draw-head, at one side of the same, the horizontal arm of the lever being made to extend transversely beneath the draw-head a sufficient distance to permit. the extremity to come in contact with the lower end of the locking-pin when in a locked position.
The vertical arm of the lever is passed upward at one side of the draw-head between guide-lugs 25, and to the upper extremity of said vertical arms a rope, rod, wire, or chain, 26, is secured, which rope is carried across the end of the car through eyes or equivalent guides 27 to the side.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with adraw-head, of a buffing-stop which is integral with an inner wall, and whose bearing-surface is coincident with the radial line from the center of revolution, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a draw-head, a knuckle-link revolubly held therein, and a wing provided with a central recess attached to said knuckle, of a buffing-stop projection within the draw-head capable of entering the recess of the wing, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with a draw-head, a knuckle-link revolubly held therein, and a wing extending at an angle from said knuckle provided with a longitudinal recess open at one end, of a butting-stop projecting Within the draw-head coincident, or approximately so, with a radial line from the center of revolution, substantially as shown and described.
, 4. The combination, with a link-knuckle for draw-heads, consisting of an outer lockingsection and a pivotal body-section, of a wing projected from the body-section provided with a longitudinal recess, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. The combination, with a draw-head provided with a pin-opening, of an angled lever fulcrumed upon the draw-head having one arm extending beneath the pin-opening and the other extending upward, and a chain or equivalent device attached to said upper arm of the lever, and all arranged to operate substantially as shown and described.
