Be it known that I, JAMES C. Snnosso v, a CItlZBIlf of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented a new and useful Shuttle, of which the following is a 7 specification.
' sents a. side elevation of the f My invention consists of a loom shuttle which is provided with plates for the frictional engagement therewith of the yarn or thread passed between the same, the upper or outer plate thereof being subjected to pressure which may be varied so as to adjust the tension on the yarn or thread to the re quired extent. in running it out of the shuttle for service in the loom.
It further eonsists also of details ofeonstruction as will be hereinafter set forth.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but the i1npoi-taut instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.

Referrin to the drawings :1 designates the body oi: a loom shuttle, and 2 designates the nose portion thereof. In the side of said body near said portion is the recess 3 which is occupied by the friction plates 4, which are imposed one on the other, the upper plate having bearing upon it, the spring 5 which'occu nes a position in the opening 6 in the nose portion 2, said opening being at a right angle to the. recess 3 andcontains also the screw 7 which passes through said spring and opening 8 in said plates 4 and has its threaded portion engaging with the body or nose portion below said recess. lsfdesignates a finger which occupies the recess 16 in the side of the nose portion 2 and has a shank or limb 16 which extends transversely into said nose portion, and is tightly engaged therewith, thus firmly retaining said finger in position. The recess 16 is in communication with the diagonally extending throat 17 in the top ofthe nose portion 2, said throat being in communication with the longitudinally-extending passage 18 which is in the side of said nose portion, said passage 18 extending to the recess 3 and communicating therewith at the rounded ends 12 of the plates 4 It will be seen that when the yarn or thread from the bobbin is to be threaded on the shuttle, it is directed behind the linger l6 and drawn forwardly whereby it enters the throat l7 and passage 18 and so reaches the ends 12 of the plates 4: and when it enters between said ends and lifts the upper plate 4, passes around the limb 16" of 'the.finger 6' asa post therefor and also around the unthreaded portion of the screw post while beingbetween said plates 4 when it plays out from the plates, through the throat 14- to the loom, it being evident that said plates' l impart. the proper tension to the thread or yarn. as the thread or yarn runs between the same, the upper plate yielding to the thread or yarn as oocasion may require, while the tension there eiopenings 10 which re- 1 plate, said upper on may be adjusted by the spring 5 due to the proper-rotation of the screw 8 as hereinbefore-referreddo. It will be seen also that the yarn or thread in its motion retained in the throat 14 and so guided by the horns 13, whereby it will pass through the plates 4 Without liability of entering the recess 8 or contacting with the Walls thereof.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a loom shuttle, a body having a reoess'in the eye thereof, friction plates therein and imposed one on the other and one having on its side separated depending horns forming a throat'therebetween, said horns freely embracing and receiving the other plate.
2. In a loom shuttle, a body having a recess, friction plates therein and imposed one upon the other and one having on its face dependin horns forming a throat therebetween, said horns freely embracing and reoeiving the other plate and said plate being further provided with a depending horn on the face opposite the first-named horns.
3. In a loom shuttle, a body having a recess, friction plates therein and imposed one upon the other and one having on its face separated depending horns forming a throat therebetween, said horns freely embracing and receiving the other plate and said plate being further provided with a depending horn on the face oppositethe first-named horns, said plates having their ends rounded.

In a loom shuttle, a body having a recess therein in the eye thereof, friction plates in said recess, one plate being imposed separately on the other, means for adjusting pressure on said plate, means in addition to said adj usting neans for guiding said plates on each other, and a finger in said bodyadjacent to said plates, said linger having a limb at an angle thereto on said body.
