'1 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE M. CHENEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Southbridge, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Loom-Shuttles, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to improvements in hand threading or automatic loom shuttles and particularly to means for providing an adjustable tension for the running thread.
Various attempts have been made to provide suitable adjustable tension devices for the thread eye of loom shuttles but so far as I am aware no hand threading or automatic shuttle has yet been produced which has an adjustable tension of as satisfactory character as that provided in the old Thompson eye which was applied to suction shuttles and which is described in Patent No. 284,089 granted Aug. 23, 1883 to John P. Thompson. The thread eye in that shuttle comprised a screw threaded cylindrical metallic piece bored longitudinally and provided at right angles to the longitudinal bore, the led through the transverse and longitudinal openings. This thread eye was so placed in the shuttle that the transverse aperture was upright so that the thread running from the cop or bobbin would pass over the same with little or no friction. By turning the eye piece however, by means of a screw driver inserted in the notch in the end thereof the thread eye might be rotated so that the thread would be caused to pass over a more or less abrupt angle to reach the opening and would also ride upon a greater extent of the outer cylindrical surface of the thread guiding member so that the tension on the thread might be considerably increased.
The object of the present invention is to provide a structure which will embody the principle and ease of operation of the Thompson thread eye in a thread eye adapted to be applied to a hand threading or automatic shuttle.
In fact the invention comprises broadly the provision of relatively movable thread 7 thread guiding member,

Another object of the invention is to provide adjustable thread guiding means of the character above described which may be eas ly assembled in the shuttle and readily replaced when broken or worn out. i

Fig. 8 illustrates a third form of thread eye embodyinginy invention being placed in reversed position to illustrate more clearly the interlocking portions of the delivery member and thread guiding member.
The hand threading loom shuttle illustrated in the drawing comprises a body portion l.,having a transverse aperture preferably extending entirely through the shuttle body, one end providing athread delivery eye hole. The shuttle body is provided with the usual cop or bobbin chamber 8 having a throat 4. leading to a vertical well 5 which communicates with the shuttle eye. In order to permit hand threading of the shuttle a vertical threading slot 6 is provided whi preferably is merges into a preferably horizontal threading slot 7 which leads preferably to the under portion of the shuttle eye 2.
As above stated the object of the invention is to provide thread guiding and delivery member for the shuttle eye which may be easily threaded and to provide means to adjust the tension upon the thread as it passes from the filling carrier into the thread eye. In the illustrative embodiments of the invention disclosed herein this is accomplished by providing a stationary delivery member fitting in the eye hole of the shuttle and a relatively movable member adapted to engage the thread as it passes through the throat of the shuttle into the thread delivery member, the adjustability of the thread guiding member being adapted to cause a variation in the abruptness of the angle formed by the thread in passing over the thread guiding portion of the thread eye.
In one form of shuttle eye as illustrated herein, the eye hole is fitted with a delivery member 8 which may be of metal, glass, porcelain or other suitable hard material and which preferably is of substantially cylindrical form having however an extension 9 adapted to be seated in a slot 9 in the wood of the shuttle body. The cylindrical portion I of the'delivery member is provided with a longitudinal slot 10 leading to a preferably cylindrical aperture 11 extending longitudinally through said delivery member. The slot 10 in which the extension 9 is seated preferably extends nearly to the central vertical plane of the body of the shuttle where it terminates in an abrupt shoulder 12 adapted to engage the inner end of the de llvery member when the same is in position in the shuttle.
A staple 13 embedded in the wood of the shuttle and bearing against the outer wall of th delivery member serves to retain the same in place and also overlies the end of the slot 10 in such a manner as to prevent the ballooning of the thread out of the eylindrical aperture 11 after it has been once introduced in the same.
' The upper portion of the delivery member cut away or milled from the inner end to form a curved or partially cylindrical recess 14 extending part way across the length of the delivery member leavinga full cylindrical portion 15 of the delivery member tocompletely fill the outer portion of the shuttle eye, and also leaving shoulders 16 and 17 to limit the adjustability of the thread engaging member herein-- after to be described so that it cannot be turned to close the threading slot 10.
In order'to impose an adjustable tension upon the thread a cylindrical screw threaded member 18 is screwed into. the aperture which forms a continuation of the shuttle eye hole said screw threaded member being provided with a narrow preferably integral tongue 19 which enters into the recess 14 to a point well beyond the wall of the throat leading to the shuttle eye.
The tongue 19 preferably is curved to fit the convex surface 20 of the delivery member and is of such a width that it is capable of being moved through a considerable are by rotation of the member 18 in the seat which is accomplished by introducing a screw driver into a slot 21 in the outer end of the member 18. The walls 16, 17 of the recess however prevent a sufficient rotation of the member 18 and its tongue 19 to interfere with the threading slot.
In threading the shuttle the thread is drawn from the cop, carried through the throat 4, and the threading slots 6, 7 and 10 into the longitudinal aperture of the de-- livery member 8 at which time the thread passes over the edge of the adjustable thread guiding member 19 being turned therebv to a position substantially at right angles to the direction in which it leaves the cop or bobbin as illustrated in Fig. 5.
By adjusting the thread guiding member rotarily the thread is caused to pass over a more or less abrupt angle to reach the opening 11 through the delivery member 8 and any desired tension may be placed upon the thread by increasing or decreasing this angle.
In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown a modified form of thread guiding instrumentality in which the thread delivery member is made of sheet metal doubled upon itself and bent into substantially cylindrical form to provide parallel walls 31, 32 spaced apart from each other to form a curved recess 33. These walls may be elongated to form extensions 34 corresponding to the extension 9 in the shuttle eye disclosed in Figs. 1 to 5. The outer end of the recess 33 may be filled with solder or other suitable material to give rigidity to the construction, unless the delivery member is drawn from a single piece of sheet metal.
The thread engaging member 35 preferably is in the form above described comprising a screw threaded stem having a curved tongue 36 extending into a slot at the inner end of the delivery member 30 and adjustable therein in the manner above described. In such case the movement of the tongue 36 is limited by the wall 37 which closes the end of the curved recess adjacent to the threading slot.
The embodiment of the invention disclosed in Fig. 8 comprises a delivery member having a substantially cylindrical portion 40 with an extension 41 adapted to fit in the slot 10 in the shuttle body, said delivery portion being provided with a longitudinal slot 42 leading to a cylindrical thread delivery aperture 43. The inner end of the extension ll is adapted to be seated against the shoulder 12 at the end of the slot 10 and the said member is retained in place by the staple 18 in the manner above described. In this embodiment of the invention the inner end wall of the delivery member 4 1 is cut away to form a recess a l adapted to receive an interlocking projection upon the thread guiding member and thereby limit the extent of its movement. The thread guiding member in this embodiment of the invention may comprise a screw threaded stem 45 adapted to be seated in the extension of the transverse aperture which forms the shuttle eyehole. This guiding member may be hollow or may be provided with a central passage leading only a portion of the way therethrough to connect with the transverse aperture l? through which the thread may be led from the cop into the chamber 43 of the delivery eye. In such construction the thread guiding member will be provided with a longitudinal slot 48 communicating with the slot 42 to permit the introduction of the thread. The end wall of the thread guiding member which lies adjacent to the inner wall of the delivery member is provided with an extension or lug l9 narrower than the width of the recess 4A and adapted to be seated therein. These inter-engaging parts therefore provide means for limiting the rotary ad justment of the thread guiding member and to prevent such adjustment thereof as to close the threading passage.
When in position in the shuttle the end portion 50 of the thread guiding member will lie beyond the vertical slot 6 and will engage tightly against the wood of the shuttle body so that there will be no opportunity for the thread to be caught.
in assembling all the thread eyes disclosed in the shuttle the thread guiding member will first be introduced into the shuttle and positioned so that the thread guiding tongue is substantially in its proper place. The delivery member will then be introduced and secured in place by the staple 13 which is driven across the end of the thread eye. The thread guiding member may then be adjusted rotarily to impose the proper tension upon the thread.
It will be understood that the embodiments of the invention disclosed herein are illustrative merely and that the invention may be embodied in other forms within the meaning and scope of the following claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a shuttle having one Of its walls apertured to form an eye and slotted to provide a. thread passage leading thereto, thread engaging instrumentalities in said eye comprising a hollow thread delivery member slotted to permit the introduction of the thread through said threading pas sage and a thread guiding membehaving an extension engaging the said delivery member and adapted to be adjusted rotarily in respect thereto to vary the abruptness of the angle formed by the thread in passing over said thread guiding member and thereby to modify the tension upon the running thread.
2. In a shuttle having an eye and slotted to provide a thread passage leading thereto, thread guiding instrumentalities in said eye comprising a hollow thread delivery member slotted to permit the introduction of the thread through said threading passage and a rotarily movable thread guiding member adapted to be adjusted to vary the tension upon the running thread, said members having interlocking means adapted to limit the adjustment whereby the thread guiding passage may not be closed.
3. In a shuttle having an eye and slotted to provide a threading passage leading thereto, a thread eye comprising a hollow substantially cylindrical delivery member having a longitudinal threading slot to per mit the introduction of the thread and a recessed portion, and a relatively movable member having athread guiding tongue seated in said recess adapted by adjustment to vary the tension upon the running thread.
4:. In a shuttle having an eye and slotted to provide a threading passage leading to the under portion of said eye, thread guiding instrumentalities comprising a curved delivery member presenting a longitudinal opening communicating with said threading passage and having an extension embedded in the wood of the shuttle and the wall thereof recessed to receive the cooperating thread guiding member and a relatively movable thread guiding member having a tongue seated in said recess and adapted to be adjusted to vary the tension upon the running thread.
5. A shuttle comprising a body portion having an aperture extending transversely thereof through the shuttle body to form an eye hole and slotted to provide a threading passage leading to said eye hole, a thread delivery member fitting in said eye hole and having an extension embedded in the body of the shuttle, the wall of the delivery portion opposite the threading slot being cut away to form a recess, a screw threaded member mounted in the aperture forming an extension of the eye hole and having a thread guiding tongue seated in the recess of. said delivery eye.
6. 7. A thread delivery eye for loom shuttles comprising a hollow, substantially cylindrical, longitudinally slotted thread delivery member, and a cooperating screw threaded cylindrical member having a thread guiding tongue rotatably engaging the thread delivery member.
8.
