The boda; A is scored by four lines fr, each of which parallel to one side edge of the body and a distance "ihere'froin equal "zo the desired height of tie box. The crossing of the lines o leaves a gusset 2 at each corner of the hodir section, which is hiseeled by a diagonal scoring TWhen the sides and ends the holitoni section are in upright position the gris- Seis 2 fold iniv'ard, as shown in Fig. and the securing staples, shown in Figs. cover section llA intended to fit down over the hotroni section fr with the iront side and ends of the @over section al; the outer sid-es of the respective side and ends oi? the hottoni section. ln order to proleei' the rear ends' or corriere or the cover ends' from injury and also lo assist in locking the @over in place on the hollom seetion, the ends of the bottoni seo-tion are provided at their out ohliqnely across such corners in position for the lower rear corners or points of the cover ends to he insertedv therein when the box is in closed form, indicated in Fig. 5. The gnssel's Q, which are' disposed at the slit corners of ihe bottoni section, lap the inner' sides oi" ille body ends over ai; least a por lion ol the respective sliis -land coperatie with the ends to forni souliers into which ille rear Corners of the eover ends may be inled when projected through the slits 4. 'lllvhile lhe provision ol" this slit in the 1nanoer and for the purpose described may seem or' lrivial iniporanee iii is found. in prae'riee lo add Very nialerially izo the prao'ieahlliiy lVhen 'the box is in ils set-np forni lheY lower rear corners 'iiih slits el, which are and eilieieney of the hex, as ille rear or irre from injury when inserted within ,the slits '4 but also assist very materially inlocking or securing the 'cover against opening.
The lapping of the gussets 2 over the slits 4 Within the bogrccauses such gussets to cooperate with the'j'respective ends of the bottom section' to grip the inserted corner por- Vtions of the cover and to guide the inserting movementsl thereof to prevent the cover corners from having contact with goods disposed within the box.
The collapsing of the box is accomplished by providing the ends of the bottom section with diagonal scorings d, which extend from the corners of such section in oblique lines to the outer or top edges of the ends, as shown, thus permitting the ends lof the bottom section to have outward collapsing movements andV the sides of such section to have inward collapsing or folding movements over vthe bottom of the section, as indicated'- in Fig. 3. The scoring and ,folding of the front side and ends of the cover section for collapsing purposes are the reverse of that of the bottom section in that the front 7 of the cover section is provided with the score lines e, which extend obliquely from the respective corners in converging relation to the outer edge of such side, as shown in Figs. l, 3, 4.- and 5. This enables the ends of the cover section to collapse inwardly upon the top portion of such section and the front 7 thereof to collapse outwardly, as indicated in Figs. 8 and 4. The cover section is then folded down flat upon the bottom section with its free end projecting beyond the front edge of'tiebottom section, thus placing the box in fiat compact form for shipping or storing. The arrancaing of the collapsing scorings d in the ends of the bottom section and the scorings e in the front side of the cover section, or vice versa, provides an exceptionally strong box, when closed, as the tendency of the ends of the cover section to fold inward opposes the tendency of the ends of thepbottom section to fold or collapse outward, and such opposing action is augmented by the insertion of .the .free ycorners ofl the cover ends into the Aslits 4 of the bottom section. The bottom section in the same manner opposes the co1- lapsing action of the cover section.
VVewish it understood that our invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified-in the claims.
Having thus described our invention,
what we claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is',-
1. A collapsible box having hingedly co nected bottoni and cover sections, the bottom section having` an obliquely disposed slit at each lower rear corner thereof and the cover section having the rear ends of its end walls free to provide corners for insertion into said slits When the cover section is closed over the bottom section.
2. A collapsible box having hingedly connected bottom and cover sections, the b`ottom section having the ends and rear side wall thereof connected at their ends by gussets, which gussets fold inward at the inner sides of the end walls and are secured thereto, and said ends having their lower rear corners provided with obliquely disposed slits which are at least partially covered at,
-their inner sides by said gussets, an'd the cover section having the rear ends of .its end walls free to. provide corners for insertionnected bottom and cover sections in a single piece, one section having its end walls profvidcd with oblique scorings to` adapt such ends to have outward collapsing movements and the connectedside Walls to have inward folding movements, and the other section having its side wall provided with oblique scorings to adapt such wall to have outward collapsing movements and the end Walls thereof to have inward folding movements.
4. A collapsible box having hingedly connected bottom and cover'sections with the en d walls o-f the bottom section adapted to have outward collapsing movements and the sidewalls of such section to have inward collapsing movements to project the hinged edge of' the cover section forwardly over the bottorr fsection, and the cover section having its front wall adapted to collapse outwardly=and its end walls adapted to fold inwardly under the top of the cover section, the cover section when collapsed down upon the bottom section having its forward edge projected beyond the forward edge of the bottom section, and the bottom section having its ends projected outwardly beyond the end edges of the cover section.
In testimony whereof, we sign this speciication in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE LEWELLYN MORRISON. ALEXANDER A. FORDON. Witnesses: f STUART C. BARNES, VIRGINIA C. SPRATT.
