As the door is given l'an opening movement from its closed position, the pawlis shifted and again rides freely over the rack as indicated in Fig. 3. It will be obvious that in the embodiment illustrated the pawl is released at each end of the rack land moves tov a position such that it may freely rideover the rack but will stop the door if given an opening movemen'tfrom 'apoint just short of its @closed position.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, there is provided a surface 2l and a pawl 20a pivoted to the lever. This pawl is, like pawl 20, adapted to engage the surface when the door is given an opening movement short of its closed position, as indicated in dotted lines. Similarly the pawl is released when the door is closed, as indicated in full lines, Vso that atoihitially operates when :the Idoor the pawl freely rides over the surface on the next opening movement. The surface 21 is of such an extent that the pawl is similarly released when the door rapproaches its fully open position, so that the pawl does not prevent the door from freely shllttin'g.
It will be observed that in the embodiment of the invention illustrated the latch which locks the door in its closed position operates to lock the door substantially at the same time as the pawl 2O is released from the rack 21. The pawl is also incapable of checking the opening movement after the latch has been released by breaking the toggle. In tlie embodiment illustrated we have shown the latch so constructed that as the door moves to its closed position the latch is automatically and positively moved to its locked position by the movement of the door. This 1s of an advantage in some instances because it tends to prevent the rebound of the door which sometimes occurs in the use of an ordinary spring-actuated latch on the jamb/ of the door.
, We are aware that various modifications of our invention may be provided without departing from the claims, and wel therefore do not desire to be limited to the particular embodiment shown in the drawings.
Whatwe claim is: c. 1. In combination, a door, automatic means for closing and latching the door, and an automatic stop for 'the door during a portion of its closing movement but inoperative on movement of the door from its closed position. v

In combination, a movable door, means automatically stopping said door against an opening movement at different points during a portion of its closing movement and comprising two parts, one of which is moved by the movement of the door, said parts being freely movable past each other and unengageable during t-he closing movement but arranged to engage 40 automatically and only when said door is given an opening movement from a point short of its closed position.
