To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, VILLIAM H. Rocnn and FREDERICK F. PoNTrUs, citizens of thc United States of America, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Alarms, of which the following 1s a full, clear, and exact de- Y scription.
Y. which can be used on sliding doors and one which may be operatively set before the door is closed, without danger of tripping or discharging the same.
Another object has been to provide a device, the tripping mechanism of which, shall be set in its operative position by the closing of the door.
Another object has been to provide a device which shall be cheap to manufacture, of
few parts, and easily installed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several f views of which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the tripping mechanism of our device, showing the trip arm of the same in the position occupied when closing the door. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same and shows the trip arm in its operative position. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the discharge mechanism of our device, and shows the hammer thereof in its operative position. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the discharge mechanism of our device. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of our device attached to a sliding door and shows it set in its operative position.
Referring now to Figs. 3 and 4 which show the discharge mechanism of our device, 10 is the base thereof which is provided at one end with an upward rightangled bent portieri 11. 12 is the cartridge anvil, which is preferably secured to the bent portion 11 and the base 10. Through the anvil 12 and the bent portion 11 is provided an aperture in which the alarm cartridge 13 is disposed. 14 is a lock plate which is pivotally secured to the anvil at 15 and has its free end disposed behind a lug 16, also carried by said anvil. This lock plate is provided with a central aperture 17 which registers with the center of the cartridge and is adapted to hold the same in its place against the anvil. 37 is a latch plate pivotally secured to the anvil 12 and bent portion 11, which retains the lock plate 14 in its position. 18 is the hammer of the discharge mechanism which is slidably supported in line with the cartridge by the standards 19, 19, which are secured to the base. The hammer 18 is provided at its outer end with a right-angled arm 20 and a cam-shaped trigger arm 21, which is bent so as to lie in a plane at right angles to the arm 20. 22 is a helical spring which is disposed about the hammer 18 and between one of the plates 19 and a pin 28 carried by the said hammer. 24 is a detent pin which is carried by the base 10 and disposed preferably at right angles to the same. This pin is adapted to engage the arm 20 of the hammer when the same is drawn back against the tension of the spring 22, as shown in the drawings.
Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2 where the tripping mechanism of our device is shown, 25 is the base thereof, which is provided with an upwardly bent end portion 26. 27 is a bearing plate which is secured to the base 25 and which is arranged to pivotally carry the lower end of the trip arm 28. 29 is a helical spring which is secured at one end to the upwardly bent portion 26, and at the other end to the trip arm 28, whereby the said trip arm is normally held at right angles to the base 25. 30 is a Z-shaped bearing standard which is secured to the base 25 and which pivotally carries one end of the lock arm 31.
This lock arm is arranged to swing in a plane at right angles to the path of rotation of the trip arm and is adapted to hold the said trip arm in its inoperative position, when the sliding door to which our device is attached, is open. 32 is a release rod, which is provided with an enlarged head 33, and which is slidably carried by the upwardly bent end portion 26 and the bearing standard 30. This release rod is normally held in the position shown in the drawings by the spring 34, which is disposed about the same. This rod is so arranged that its rear end is engageable with the lock arm 31.
In Fig. 5 where we have shown our device in position, 35 represents a fragmental portion of a sliding door and 36 a fragmental portion of the casing thereof. As shown in this figure the discharge mechanism of our device is secured in the position shown, to the casing 36, on the inside of the door. The tripping mechanism is preferably set in the door with the upwardly bent end portion 26 flush with the front edge of the door so that the trip arm will project inwardly when it is in its operative position, as shown in this igure.
When our device has been attached to-a sliding door, as for instance, a boX car door, and it is desired yto load and set the same, acartridge or percussion cap is placed in the aperture provided through the anvil l2 and bent portion l1 and locked in place. The hammer 18 is then drawn back and the arm 20 thereof hooked over the detent pin 24.y y This will bring the cam-shaped trigger arm 21 in the path of travel of the trip arm 28 oi' the tripping device, when said trip arm is in yits `operative position.
After the discharge mechanism has been loaded and set, the trip arm 2S of the trippingmechanism is pulled down to the position shown by the dotted lines (Fig. 2) and the lock varm made to engage with the same andhold it in place. It is to be seen that when the trip arm is in this position the sliding door may be closed without interference with the discharge mechanism or danger of tripping the same. v
When the door has been entirely closed, the head 33. oit' the releasey rod will engage with the door j amb and will be pushed back flush with the face of the bent end portion 26 and against the tension of the spring 34. As the release rod is pushed inwardly by theclosing of the door, its inner end will engage withlthe lock arm 3l and move the samesubstantially to the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. l, Which releases the trip arm from its inoperative position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, and allow the same to be drawn by the spring 29 toL its operative position as shown in Figs. 2 and 5. 7When the door is then opened by anyiinauthorized person, the trip arm will engage with the cam-shaped trigger 2l of the discharge mechanism and partially rotate the saine, thus releasing it from the detent pin 24 and allowing it to be driven forward under the tension of the spring 22, thereby discharging the cartridge and giving the alarm.4
