To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD S. ToADvrN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar- Alarms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to alarms and more particularly to the portable type which may be conveniently placed on the floor to receive engagement from an inwardly swinging door.

An object of this invention is the provision of a compact unit having a spring mechanism to sound the alarm and a movable portion actuated as by a door for starting and maintaining the spring mechanism for sounding the alarm.

A further object of this invention is the provision of an attachment to enable the alarm being used on windows.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a base having spurs struck therefrom for engagement with the floor and some of said spurs serving as a fulcrum for said base should the door pass over the movable member and engage the alarm to actuate said movable member.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a yieldable trip to be actuated by a door or the like which controls the operation of a spring motor, said trip maintaining said motor in operation until manually released, when said trip has been actuated.

Further objects will be apparent from the following specification, appended claims and drawings in which Figure 1 isa perspective View showing the alarm applied to a door and window, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the alarm, Fig. 3 1s a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing an attachment on said alarm.

This invention provides an alarm which may be conveniently carried as by a traveler and which may be placed on the floor adjacent the door sill so that as the door is opened, it contacts w1th a yieldable portion of said alarm, starting a spring motor to sound the alarm and furthermore to look a trip in a position to maintain the spring motor in operation until manually released. This construction will be appreciated when it is considered that when the door is partly opened, the alarm is set into operation and contlnues to sound even though the door he closed again. In this invention the alarm continues to sound after once having started.

Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 indicates the interior of a room having a door 10 and wlndow 11 in the wall thereof and showing the alarm placed before the door and in engagement with the two sashes of the window. The alarm comprises a plate 12 which has

13 and 14 formed thereon by bending portions of said plate from the plane of the major portion thereof and to this plate is attached a bell 15 which forms part of a casing to include a spring motor of the usual type having a push pin 16 to free the action of the spring motor and sound the alarm. This push pin has a head 17 and the bell 15 with its associated parts is of common construction, commonly used for bicycles and the like. The plate 12 has a leaf 18 attached to the underside of the forward end and from this leaf extends a spring 19 which is bent as at 20 to allow. the spring to extend over the plate 12.

The end of the spring 19 is bent downwardly as at 21 and has a lip 22 formed at the end thereof which lip engages the head 17 when the spring 19 is depressed, pushing said head inwardly to liberate the spring motor and said lip engaging under the head to maintain the push pin in inward position and to lock the spring 19 in depressed position until otherwise released. The spurs 13 are disposed under the bell 15 and serve as a fulcrum upon which the base and bell may be swung should the door pass over the spring 19 without operating the alarm so that continued inward movement of the door engages the bell to swing the alarm on the fulcrum and thereby cause the forward end of the plate 12 to rise when the spring 19 will be actuated in the usual manner.

\Vhen it is desired to use the alarm on a window, an attachment comprising a U- shaped clip 23 is placed on the alarm to re ceive the forward end of the plate 12 and spring 19 in the ends of the U-shaped clip and a spur 24 is formed on this clip so that said spur may engage one sash of the window or frame while the spurs 13 engage a portion of the other sash.
