LOUIS K. JOHNSON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BURGLAR ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,805, dated November 13, 1888.
Application filed February 14, 1888. Serial No. 264,025. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Louis K. Johnson, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarms, of which the following is a specification, sufficient to enable others to make and use the same.
The object of myinvention is to afford cheap and effective mechanism for giving notice of any tampering with doors or windows to which the device may be connected, the ap paratus being adapted for either temporary or permanent application to an apartment or series of apartments.
The main feature of my invention consists in the special construction and arrangement, as hereinafter set forth,of a spring-bolt arranged with relation to a percussion-cap or cartridge set in such manner that when an attempt is made to open a door or window to which the device is applied the bolt will be released and will fire the fulminate or other explosive Incidentally my invention also includes the combination, with the springbolt, of a tension-wire or suspender to which one or more alarm-bells are attached, the release of the bolt setting in vibration the bells, which are presumably situated in more remote portions of the building.
In the accompanying drawings I illustrate operative mechanism for carrying out my improvements, although I do not wish to confine myself strictly to the identical form and construction of parts herein shown and described, since it is obvious that various modifications may be made without deviating materially from the essential features of my invcntion.
Figure 1 represents the arrangement of the apparatus in connection with a door, and Fig. 2 represents the device as applied to a window.
It is obviously immaterial whether the boltplate A is attached to the door or to its jamb, or to which sash of a window it is secured when applied to the latter.
In Fig. l of the drawings the bolt-plate A is shown as attached to the inner side of the door, while the catch-plate is secured to the jamb.
In Fig. 2 the bolt-plate A is secured to the top of the lower sash, and the catch-plate a to the lower bar of the upper sash.
The bolt-plate A is formed with a flange or hearing, a which is perforated to receive the cylindrical portion of the cartridge B, the onlarged rim b of which holds it in position. The
plate A is also formed with a bolt-standard, (0*, through which the bolt 0 slides longitudinall The outer end of the bolt 0 is formed with a shoulder, c, which engages with the catchplate a upon the jamb of the door or upon the opposite sash, as the case may be.
The spiral spring S is arranged upon the bolt 0 in such manner as to tend constantly to project the inner end, a", of the bolt against the cap or cartridge B.
In the extreme outer end of the bolt G a small book or recess, 0, is formed for the purpose of affording engagement with a vertical bolt, D, attached to the lower end of the suspender E, which is conducted to any desired portion of the building, and is held taut by a retractile spring or springs, F. At a suitable point intermediate between the bolt D and the spring F alarm-bells G are connected with the suspcnder E in such manner that when the bolt 0 is released from any cause, thereby allowing the retractile spring F to suddenly pull the suspender E and bolt D upward, the bells G will be agitated, more or less, and assist in giving the necessary alarm.
The bolt 0 is released either by the opening of the door or window carrying the shoulder 0 beyond the catch-plate a, or in the case of the door by a cam or projection, H, situated upon the door-knob spindle I, which, when the latter is turned, raises the bolt 0 sufficiently to clear the said catch-plate a. In either case the spring S causes the end'a of the bolt to come violently in contact with the cap or cartridge B and discharge it.
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
l. A burglar-alarm for windows and doors, consisting of a bolt-plate, A, provided with a cartridge-holder, a cartridge B, bolt-standard a, bolt 0, and spring S, arranged upon the door or window sash, in combination with a catch-plate, a, arranged upon the door or window frame in such relation to the spring bolt Gas to hold the latter away from the cartridge when the door or window is closed and to release the said bolt against the cartridge when the door or window is opened, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
2. In a burglar-alarm for doors and win- (lows, substantially such as herein shown and described, the eombination, with the bolt plate A, attached to a door and provided with a cartridge-holder, a, cartridge B, holtstaudard a", bolt 0, and spring S, and with a catch-plate arranged upon the door-frame in such relation to the spring-bolt as to hold the latter away from the cartridge when the door is closed, 01' a door-knob spindle, l, formed with a lateral projection, II, by which the springbolt C may be released from the catch-plate a, substan tially in the manner and for the purpose described.
3. In a burglar-alarm for doors and windows, the combination, with the bolt-plate A, arranged upon a door or window sash and provided with a cartridge-holder, a cartridge B, bolt-standard a, bolt 0, and spring S, and with a catch-plate, a, arranged upon the door or window frainein such relation to the springbolt 0 as to hold the latter away from the cartridge when the door or window is closed and to release the said bolt against the said cartridge when the door or window is opened, of a catch-bolt, 1), arranged to engage with the said spring-bolt O, and attached to a suspender, E, provided with a retractile spring, F, and connected with an alarm-bell, G, situated in different compartment for the purpose, and arranged and operating substantially in the manner set forth.
