Description

UNITED STATES PATENTl OFFICE.
ELBRIDGE Gr. MATTHEWS, OF OAKHAM, ASSIGNOR TO FRANKLIN F. HOLBROOK, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SW-IVEL-PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l0,9l9. dated November 1, 1870.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELBRIDGE G. MAT- THEWS, of Oakham, in the county of Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swivel-Flows, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a side View of my irnproved swivel-plow, and Fig. 2 represents a transverse sectionv of the point or share. l
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination, with the point or share in a swivel-plow, of steel wings or cutting-edges, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, the part marked A is the beam, B the mold-board, and C C the standards, which connect the beam A and bed D, all of which may be constructed in the ordinary manner, and therefore require no further description.
The point or share E is provided with steel wings F at each of its sides, as shown in the l drawings. The upper surface of the point is recessed to a sufficient depth to receive the thickness of the wings F, and they are secured in place by rivets or bolts a. The front ends of the wings F rest or abut against 1 shoulders b b on the point,- as indicated in the drawings. By combining the wings F With the mold-board B and point or share E, as above described, the front ends of the wings are protected by the shoulders b bfrom injury while in use.
In the operation of the plow the Wing which is uppermost acts as a sward-cutter, while the one which is in a horizontal position cuts the roots under the furrow-slice, thus insuringthe' perfect separation and turning of the sod.
Having described my improved swivelplow, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, .and desire to secure by Letters Paten, is-
The combination, with the swiveled moldboard B and point or share E, of the wings F F, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
E. G. MATTHEWS.
