IMPROVEMENT IN DlTCHlNG-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLARD PIERCE, of Truxton, in the county of Cortland, andin the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ditching-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and general arrangement of a ditchingmachine, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a rear View. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view.
A represents themain beam of the machine, having at its front end the clevis B, to which the beam may be attached at any height desired. From near the rear end of thebeam A extends a bar, 0, downward and forward, formbottom, G. Atthe front ends of the sides F F are pivoted side wings, H H, which extend outward at their rear ends, and are adjusted to the sides at any angle desired by means of a bolt, a, and nut, the bolt passing through curved slots in the sides FF, as seen in Fig. 1.. The handles I I are secured between the sides F F at their rear edge, one on each side of the beam A. At the front end of the beam A,and under the same,is pivoted a curved bar, J, the front end of which can be raised or lowered at pleasure. This bar is provided with a roller, K, which moves on the ground in front of the point D, and by the raising or lowering of the bar J the depth of the ditch is easily regulated.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The arrangement of thebeam A, beveled bar 0, with plow-point D, sides F F, and bot tom G,allsubstantially as shown and described.
2. The arrangement on the front end of the beam A, of the clevis B, and adjustable curved bar J with roller K, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The adjustable side wings, H H, pivoted to the sides F F,and made adj ustable bymeans of the bolt a, passing through curved slots in the sides, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination and arrangement of the beam A, olevis B, bar 0, point D, cutter E, sides F F, bottom G, wings H H, handles I I, curved bar J, and roller K, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of August. 1869.
WILLARD PIERCE.
