To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Arman V. STEALY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Hotater or Steam Boiler, of which the following is specification.
My invention relates to boilers in which Water is heated for the purpose of heating buildings and the objects of my improvement are, first, to have rapid circulation of water through the boiler; second. to make the heating area as large as possible: third, to arrange the tire pot so that the area of the grate can be varied; fourth, to avoid horizontal movement of the water through the boiler: fifth, to use the hot products of combustion, for preheating the water, sixth to provide automatic means whereby the products of combustion will be shunted to the chimney each time the fire door is opened: seventh, to provide automatic means whereby a. flue connecting the ash pit and chimney is opened each time the ash pit door opened: eighth, to make a cheap durable and eflicient boiler and other features to become apparent from the description to follow.
In boilers used to heat water it is very desirable to have the greatest e'l'liciency with the least possible waste of fuel. to avoid dust and smoke in the room when feeding in fuel or removing ashes, to preheat or gradually heat the water, to have the water moving upward during the time it is being heated, to be able to change the size of the grate without changing the size of other parts, to have a large heating area and to have the water circulate through the boiler rapidly. 1 boiler in accordance with my invention contains all these desirable features, and comprises a rectangular trough like water jacket having its two sides flaring outward and up ward so that a grate placed between these side walls can be of any desired width, the
larger being placed higher in the troughlike jacket than the smaller. Suitable intake pipes are connected between the bottom oi. the water jacket and a header and suitable outlet pipes which are arranged in a novel manner are connected between the top of the water jacket and a header.

The inner and outer sheets of the water jacket 3 are secured together by suitable tie bolts 6. Communionting with the interior of the bottom l is a system of pipes or tubes 15 anrauged staggered to admit the passage of hot gases therebetweeu, having their lower ends connnunientirely connected with the lower hcrulcr 1G. 2, the front end anally vorti- Secured to the inside sheet of each side wall near the top thereof are two rows .of tubes which extend a short distance at right angles to their respective sheets, thence upward on an incline toward the center of the firebox and finallyupward substantially vertically to the lower side of the header 11 to which the said tubes are secured. These two rows of tubes are ranged staggered at each end where they are secured. in the sheet metal plates but for the greater portion of their length they lie in the same plane and are arranged close te et-her so as to resent a corru ated sur-v face to the hot gases above the firebox, the back orfupper side of said corrugated surface formed by the tubes 17 is covered by fire-brick 18 which has its lower ends resting on the top of the walls of the water jacket 3. Secured to the bottom plate of the upper header 11 between the double rows of pipes 17 are the upper ends of a center row of tubes 19 which ends are alternately staggered so as to enable securing said tubes to the bottom plate of the npper header ll still have the tubes so close together i that they will substantially touch throughout their greater length where they are formed to lie in the same vertical plane and serve as a central vertical partition extending longitudinally over the center of the grate grate the tubes 19, forming said central partition, are alternately-bent toward either side and have their lower ends secured. to the opposing plates of the upright sidewalls 5 justbelow the tubes 1. The outer walls 18 at the top terminate in curved portion 23 which extend to the sides of the upper header 11 and extend lon gitudinally from the-front plate 9 to the rear plate 12. -The outer side of the frontand back plates 9 and 12 are covered with fire brick 52 1 or other materialwhich is a nonconductor otheat, to prevent the radiation ofheat.
