DISK COLTER.
Specification of Letters Yatent.
Patented Feb, 17, rate.
Application filed June 3, 1912. Serial No. 701,278
Yb all iii/nun it may concern:
lie it known that l, lrlnnny 1. Lauren- BAUEI, a citizen of the United States, residing at l larlx 'ille, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Disk Colters, of which the toll wring is a specification.
My invention relates to disk colters for nioldboard plows, and the leading objectis the provision oi a novel form of connection between the colter disk and the beam of the plow by means of which the colter disk can be quickly attached and adjusted upon either side of the beam of a inoldboard plow.
Another obj ect of my invention is the provision of a disk colter which will permit of the adjustment of the disks to either side of the beam of a moldboard plow and which will locate the cleaning or scraping implement in proper position with reference to the disk to accomplish its purpose upon either adjustment of said disk hanger to the beam of the plow.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a disk colter which in addition to performing the objects stated will possess merit in point of simplicity, durability, and inexpensivencss of production, and will prove thoroughly eflicient and practical.
To attain the desired objects, my inven tion consists of a disk colter embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of one of my colters and a sufiicient portion of the plow beam structure to illustrate its application. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view showing the bracket or hanger in elevation with the scraper adjusted in its relation to the disk. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation oil a modified construction of my disk colter. Fig. trepresents a sectional view of this modified construction showing the scraper and hanger in elevation, Fig. 5 represents a sectional view of a slightly modified 0011- struction of bearing for the disk and hanger.
in the drawings :The letter A designates a sullicient portion of the beam of supporting structure of a plow using a disk colter, which beam has secured thereto the bearing bracket E, in which is adjustably mounted the upright portion C of the disk hanger, which hanger in Figs. 1 and 2 is provided with the inclined lateral arm I), which is formed with the stud or axle E,
upon which the slewe F, threaded at G to receive the threaded dust cap and lubricant holder H, and further formed with the concaved flange J and with the collar J, which fits the split securing collar K, adjustable laterally upon the sleeve to adjust the width of cut of the disk, L, which disk is provided with a central opening L fitting over the sleeve and said disk is in Figs. 1, 9., 3 and l secured to the cupped or concaved flange by means of the belts or rivets M.
From this construction, it will be observed that the disk is properly mounted upon the bearing sleeve and that the bearing sleeve is capable of a rotary motion upon the stud or stub axle of the hanger, and upon the hanger is secured the clip or loop N and is adjustable thereon by means of the adjusting set screw N and has the double bearing face N which through the medium of the pair of adjusting nuts O, is adapted to retain the upper end P of the scraper P in proper re lation to the disk, which scraper in Figs. 1 and 2 is of a certain configuration, and in said figures, the bracket or hanger is dis posed on the outside of the concave portion of the disk.
In Figs. 3 and t, the hanger is disposed opposite the concave of the disk and consists of the vertical arm Q formed with the stud or axle Q, fitting in the bearing sleeve R, which is retained upon said sleeve by means of the collars S, the washers S and the flanges T of the bearing sleeve, said sleeve in this construction being connected to the disk in the same manner as the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, but the scraper T consists of the lower curved portion lying contiguous to the concave face of the disk and formed with the vertical arm T which receives the adjusting nuts U for securing the same to the loop or clip U adjustable by means of the adjusting set screw V upon the hanger.
In the form of invention shown in Fig. 5, the construction is practically the same as is Fig. 2, except that the securing nuts or bolts M are dispensed with and the sleeve ii is threaded tor a partof its length to engage the threaded tightening nut Vi, between the head of which and the flange J, the disk is secured firmly, a dust cap and lubricant holder X being threaded onto the outer end of the sleeve lV.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be observed that the disk hanger can be adjusted upon either side of the moldboard plow beam, and that the split securing collar K is adjustable laterally and the sleeve and disk can be moved either way along the stub axle to provide for the width of cut of the disk.
It will be observed that the peculiar con struction of the support and the arrangement of the hub as well as the location of the scraper, disposes the disk in proper relation with reference to the support as well as the scraper and permits of the adjustment of the scraper in proper manner to cause the scraper to lie snugly against the curved face of the disk, and thereby the disk is properly supported and the scraper is located in the best possible relation to perform its service.
1. In a disk colter, the combination with the frame of the implement, the hanger consisting of the vertical, inclined and axle portion, the disk rotatable on the axle portion, the sleeve fitting on the vertical portion of the hanger and formed with a curved face ravin a pair of screw sockets, a scraper having its lower portion lying adjacent to the face of the disk and its upper portion resting upon the curved face of the sleeve, 0
lower scraping portion in proper relation to the disk.
2. In a disk colter, the combination with the frame of the implement, the hanger having the vertical portion axially and vertically adjustable upon the frame and hav- 1 ing the inclined portion and the axle portion arranged at a right-angle to the vertical portion of said hanger, the disk rotatable on said axle, the sleeve mounted on the vertical portion of the hanger and capable of vertical and axial adjustments and having an outer curved bearing face, and ascraper having its lower scraping portion arranged acent to the face of the disk and its upper end clamped against the curved face of the sleeve by a pair of adjusting screws and adapted to be adjusted by said curved face.
in testi nony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
