IMPROVEM-ENT IN PORTABLE GARDENSPRINKLERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent N o. 129,125, dated July 16, 1872.
v Garden-Sprinkler; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sufficient to` enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention and improvements without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to an improved portable garden-sprinkler of that class known as revolving sprinklers, in which the force of the Water, in turning a right angle, acts upon the nozzle to cause it to travel around in a circle.
In order to explain my invention so that others will be ableA to understand its construction and operation, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my sprinkler. Fig. 2 is a plan of the rim and vanes.
A represents a vertical pipe, which can be mounted upon a portable frame or stand 'and is connected with the main water-pipe. At the upper end of this pipe is secured horizontally a circular ange, B, and above this ila-n ge is secured the horizontal revolving nozzle C. The nozzle is secured by a loose joint or coupling, so that the force of the water through the pipe will cause it to travel around or revolve in a circle. Secured to the nozzle, just above the flange B, is a projecting arm,

e, depends, so as tobear upon the ilange. In a working machine I prefer to construct the flange of some flexible material, and employ setscrews at intervals apart, which can be turned up from beneath against it, so as to provide an up-anddown or undulatory track, upon which the extremity of the pin or rod e will travel. The object of this arrangement is to permit the -stream to be regulated so as to water any particular spot of ground inside or outside of any fixed or intermediate circle. The extremity of the nozzle C is bent slightly to one side, as shown, and a plate, h, is secured to its underside so as to extend horizontally beyond its extremity, at the outer end of which is secured adjustably a vertical knife or blade, 7', directly in the line of the stream as it issues om the nozzle. This block can be set at an angle to the stream so as to scatter it as desired. It can also be adjusted across the stream so as to catch more or less of the water and scatter it. The head K, upon which'the nozzle is screwed, is made double, as shown, so that two nozzles can be used, if desired, one opposite the other; but generally I shall employ but one nozzle, and secure upon the opposite screwr a notched arm, l, upon which a pea or Weight, m, is employed to balance the nozzle. .By moving the pea back and forth the elevation of the stream from the nozzle can be regulated. N is a thin annular rim, or disk, if preferred, the outer edge of which is split at intervals, so as to form leaves o. The rim is-large enough to extend slightly beyond and above the circle described bythe revolving nozzle, and it is secured in the head K, so as to be permanent while the head revolves with the nozzle independent of it.
When the nozzle or sprinkler has been planted at the desired spot in the garden or yard, the spread or sweep ofthe stream can be regulated by simply turning down the leaves o so as to cramp it in the desired space or direction.
Each leaf can be given a different inclination, so as to throw the water in any desired .irregular circle.
By this means I provide a novel arrangement for a gardensprinkler, which will be quite effective Aand ornamental.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the revolving head K, the sprinkler C with' its plate h and the adjustable blade j, substantially as`and for the purpose above described.
2. The revolving sprinkler C, in combination with the rim N, or equivalent, device, having adjustable leaves o, as and for the purpose specified.
3. The horizontal circular flange B, in combination with the arm d with its pin or rod e, and the revolving nozzle C, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
