UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB SMITH, OF MUNOIE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO LAVVRENOE GOOD, OF CONVERSE, INDIANA.
LAWN-SPRINKLER.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,042, dated December 30, 1902.
Application filed November 23, 1901. Serial No. 83,435. (No model.)
To all whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muncie, in the county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Lawn-Sprinkler, of which the following isa specification.
My invention is an improved lawn-sprin kler, and has for its object to provide a device capable of ready attachment to the ordinary garden-hose. In carrying out this object I provide a base-section, to which is at: tached the sprinkling-section having a valve arranged therein by which the flow of water may be controlled. The base -section and sprinkling-section are provided with semicircular recesses, in which the hose is adapted to fit, the latter being provided with an opening registering with the valve-controlled opening in the sprinklingsection and through which water passes.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in certain peculiar features ofconstruction and novel combination and ar rangement of parts, as will be fully described in the following specification, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a section of a garden-hose with several of my improved sprinklers connected thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional View of the sprinkler. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same, taken about on the line. of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the sprinkler, and Fig. 5 is a section about on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention I employ a base A, comprising the'central portion A, having a semicircular recess A arranged therein, and the lateral extensions or foot portions A as clearly shown. Upon the base A is arranged the top section B, whose extreme upper end terminates in a bowl B, in which is held the perforated concavo-convexed disk B which may he held in place by any suitable means. The lower portion of the top section B is provided with lateral extensions B perforated and adapted to receive screws by which the base and top sections are securely clamped together. The lower portion of the top is also provided with a semicircular recess 13 that is arran ed o osite the e PP designed to fit a short pipe-section b, which projects from theupper end of the semicircular recess B This pipe-section communicates with an opening I), which enters the bowl B, and interposed in the section B between the pipe-section b and opening I) is a valve D, by which the flow of Water may be controlled, as will be readily understood.
By arranging the base and top sections as described the sprinkler may be readily attached to a hose, it being only necessary to cut a small opening in the hose into which the pipe I) is adapted to fit, after which the sections are clamped together by the screws, which also securely fastens the hose in position.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I provide a very simple and efficient lawnsprinkler and one in which any number may be placed upon a hose and used simultaneously, if desired, and thus covering a large area at the same time.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A lawn-sprinkler comprising a base-section having a semicircular recess produced therein, a top section arranged upon the said base and having a semicircular recess arranged opposite the recess in the base and also having a discharge-opening arranged therein, the lower end of said discharge-open ing terminatingin a pipe-section which projects into the said semicircular recess, a hosesection arranged within the said recess and having an aperture arranged therein in which is adapted to fit the pipe-section, and a valve arranged within the said topsection, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a lawn-sprinkler, the combination of a base-section and a top section, said base section having a central recessed portion and cess substantially as described.
I gral with the top and extending into the re- JACOB SMITH.
