LAWN-SPRINKLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 581,252, dated April 20, 1897. Application filedvMarch 2,1896. Serial No. 581,608- (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM QUAYLE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn Sprinklers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in lawn-sprinklers; and it consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a front View of the device with the base broken away. In this view the spray-disk is adjusted to cocupy a position to one side of the nozzle-openin g. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken through the device, the base being broken away. Fig. 4: is a fragmentary View of the bracket-arm shown on a larger scale. Fig. 5 is an underneath view of the spray-cone.
Similar reference-characters, indicating corresponding parts in the views, let the numeral 5 designate the base, which comprises a spiral coil of pipe lying in a horizontal plane. To the outer extremity of this coil is attached a swiveled nut 6, forming a couplingfor the hose connected wit-h the hydrant or other source of supply. At the inner extremity of the pipe forming the base-coil the latter merges into an upright arm 5 formed integral with the base-coil. To the upper extremity of the arm 5 is attached the nozzle 7, provided with an upwardly-curved bracketarm 7, whose outer extremity 7 is provided with shallow notches adapted to engage and temporarily lock the adjustable spring-holder 8 of the rotatable spray-cone 9. The part 8 comprises a piece of spring-wire shaped substantially as shown in the drawings and having its lower extremity threaded to engage a threaded aperture formed in the shank of the bracket-arm 7 From this threaded extremity the part 8 curves outwardly to engagement with the notched'extremity 7 of the bracketarm, thence upwardly, over, and downwardly, terminating at a suitable point above the nozzle, its upper extremity occupying such a position that when the part 8 is turned in the threaded aperture of the bracket-arm the arc described by its upper extremity will intersect a perpendicular line passed through the center of the aperture in the nozzle and produced or carried upward to the plane of the arc.
The spray-cone 9 engages the upper extremity of the holder 8 and is adapted to rotate freely thereon. It also has a limited vertical movement on the extremity of the holder which forms its axis. The spray-cone 9 .is provided with a central recess, which the extremity of the holder 8 engages, said recess being open above to receive the depending extremity of the holder. The lower surface of the spray-cone terminates at the center in a conical point 9, while from the base of this point spiral grooves lead upwardly and outwardly to the circumference of the cone. These grooves increase in depth as they extend outwardly, being deepest at their outer extremities.
As shown in the drawings, the spiral grooves of the spray-cone are of unequal depth and graduated, there being two series of these grooves, diametrically opposite and correspondingly arranged in such a manner as to balance the cone or dispose its weight equally about its axis.
The object of graduating or varying the depth of the spiral grooves in the spray-cone is to cause an equal or approximately equal distribution of the water over the entire surface or area bounded by the outer limits of the spray. For instance, the water which engages the deepest groove will rise highest and be thrown farthest, while that which engages the shallowest groove will fall close to the discharge-nozzle 7, while that which engages the intermediate grooves will be distributed between these limits in the order of the depths of the grooves.
As shown in the drawings, the upper extremity 7 c of the bracket-arm is provided with a central notch A and two notches B O on each side thereof. (See Fig. 4.) Theholder 8 is screwed into the threaded aperture in the bracket-arm until the holder will rest tightly in any one of these notches, the construction being such that it may be easily shifted from one to another, according as it is desired to regulate the spray to produce the several results hereinafter specified.
If the holder 8 engages the central notch A, the perpendicular center of the spray-cone will be directly in line with the center of the aperture in the nozzle 7, and when the water is turned on its force will raise the cone to the position shown in the drawings and cause the same to rotate, producing a full-circle spray. Again, if the holder 8 be adjusted to engage either notch B the outer edge of the spray will describe an are equal to about threefourths of a circle and predominating 011 that portion of the adjacent area corresponding with that part of the cone which is the more exposed to the action of the water. Finally, if the holder is shifted to engage either notch C the area covered by the resulting spray will be equal to a half-circle. Hence by this adjustment a particular portion of the area surrounding the device may be kept dry or exempt from the action of the water distributed by the sprinkler.
The base 5 of the device is large enough to form a stable support therefor and at the same time permit the sprinkler to be moved or drawn about at pleasure while the device is in operation.
hen not in operation or when the water is shut off, the cone, if the holder 8 is in the central notch A of the bracket-arm, will drop to engagement with the nozzle 7 and form a valve, effectually closing the nozzle (see dotted lines in Fig. 3) and preventing the accidental stoppage of the passage-way until the water is again turned on, when its force immediately raises the spray-cone to the position shown by full lines in the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a lawn-sprinkler, the combination of the base comprising a pipe-coil and the upright arm, the nozzle attached to the upright arm of the base and provided with the bracketarm having its free extremity notched, the spring holder having its lower extremity threaded and engaging a threaded aperture formed in the bracket-arm, said holder being bent outward to engagement with the extremity of the arm, and thence upward and downward, terminating at a suitable point above the nozzle, and the spray cone rotatably mounted on the spring-holder and provided on its under surface with spiral grooves, substantially as described.
2. In a lawn-sprinkler, the combination of a suitable base and nozzle, the latter being provided with a bracket-arm having its free extremity provided with a number of notches, the spring-holder movably attached to the bracket-arm, and the spray-cone rotatably mounted on the depending portion of said holder above the nozzle, the under surface of said cone having a series of spiral grooves, substantially as described.
3. In a lawn-sprinkler, the combination of a conduit provided with a nozzle, and having a lateral arm, the holder mounted on said arm and terminating at a suitable point above the nozzle in a depending vertical portion, and the spray cone rotatably mounted on the holder, said holder being mounted uponthe lateral arm at a point to one side of the nozzle, to rotate thereon in a plane transverse to said nozzle, whereby the spray-cone holder may be so adjusted that the axis of said cone may be made to occupy a position to one side of the or center of the nozzle.
4-. In a lawn-sprinkler, the combination of a conduit provided with a nozzle and having a lateral arm, the holder mounted on said arm and terminating at a suitable point above the nozzle in a depending vertical portion, and a suitable spraying device rotatably mounted on the holder, said holder being mounted upon the lateral arm at a point to one side of the nozzle, to rotate thereon in a plane trans verse to said nozzle, whereby the said device may be so adjusted that its axis may be made to occupya position to one side of the axis of the center of the nozzle.
5. In alawn-sprinkler, the combination with a suitable nozzle, of a holder attached to the nozzle and terminating in a depending arm above the nozzle, and the spray-cone rotatably mounted on the holder, the under surface of the cone being provided with graduated spiral grooves, or grooves of unequal depth, as and for the purpose set forth.
6. The rotatable spray-cone having its under surface, or that exposed to the water, provided with a series of grooves varying in depth, as and for the purpose set forth.
7. The rotatable spray-conehaving the surface exposed to the water provided with two series of spiral grooves the several grooves of each series being unequal in depth, and the two series diametrically and correspondingly disposed about the axis, as and for the purpose set forth.
8. In a lawn-sprinkler, the combination with a suitable conduit provided with a nozzle, of a lateral arm also attached to the conduit and havin its outer extremity notched, the holder movably attached to said arm and adapted to engage the notched extremity thereof, and a spraying device rotatabl y attached to the depending extremity of the holder, substantially as described.
0. In a lawn-sprinkler,the combination with a suitable conduit provided with a nozzle, of a lateral arm also attached to said conduit and having its outer extremity turned upward, the gooseneck-holder movably attached to said arm and adapted toen gage its outer extremity, and the spraying device rotatably attached to the depending extremity of the holder, substantially as described.
