SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,875, dated March 8, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HOWARD P. NToHoLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cleaning-Brushes,&c.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accoin panyin g drawing, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The drawing is a representation of this in vention, and is partly a side view, the brush end being in section.

The invent-ion relates to cleaning-brushes; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawing, A designates a hollow handle, its larger end, a, being screw-threaded to engage a screw-threaded ring, I), on the end of the rubber tubing B, which connects the handle with any proper source of water-supply. The outer end of the tubing B is screw-threaded or otherwise constructed to connect with the discharge-tube of a hydrant.

The smaller end, a, of the handle is bent or curved at right angles, and its extremity is provided with one or more sprinklirig-orifices, c, as shown. Secured to and surrounding the bent end a of the handle is a concave plate or cap, 0, to the lower surface of which abrushhead, sponge, or equivalent device is attached. The adding of the bruslrhead orsponge makes the device a complete brush.

D is a valve to control the amount of water admitted into the handle or to cut the water off. The valve may be of any usual construction.

E is a concave deflector surrounding the handle near its brush end to prevent water running down the same when raised.

F is a branch tube standing from the handle ata point between the brush and the deflector 1]. This tube has a side opening,f, around which'is swiveled, water-tight, the sprinklertube G, the inner end of which is enlarged and made into a ring, 9, to surround the tube F. \Vhen the sprinkler-tube is turned outward, as shown in full lines in the drawing, its open end, inside of the swiveled ring g, communicates with the openingf in the tube F, and water can flow through the sprinkler; but when the latter is turned entirely inward the water is cut off from it.

H is a valve in the tube F, of any suitable construction, for cutting water off from the sprinkler in any position. This valve prevents the water from flowing should the sprinle ler he accidentally turned while the device is in use in a place where no sprinkler is wished. The end of the sprinkler-tube is bent downward, and is provided with the convex perforated sprinkler-plate h, surrounded by the concave defiectonfiange h, to prevent water from running on the tube.

By placing a valve, I, on the handle, between the end thereof and the tube F, the water can be cut off from the brush and the device used solely as a sprinkler.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. The combination of the connecting-tubing B, the hollow handle having the sprinkling-nozzle within the cap, the cap for the attachment of the brush, and the swiveled sprinkling-tube attached to the handle, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of the connectingtube B, the hollow handle A, provided with the sprinkling-orifices c, valve D, and branch tube F, the cap 0, the swiveled sprinkler-tube G,

having the sprinkling-plate h and deflectorflange h, and the valve H, substantially as specified.

3. The combination of the conncctingtube, the hollow handle provided with orifices c and valves D and I, the cap 0, the branch tube F, having the valve H, the deflector-plate E on the handle, and the swiveled sprinkler-tube provided with the sprinkling-plate h and deflector-flange h, substantially as specified.
