To all whom 'it may concern:
Beit known that I, EMIL BARTELS, of the cityl of New York, in the county and State of New York', have invented new and useful Improvements in Reclining-Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others 'skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
The purpose of my invention is to improve upon tige reclining-chair patented to Hardy, December 11, l 60.
I vwill first describe my invention in connection with all that is necessary to a full understanding thereof, and then point it out in the claim. l
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improvedv former being hollow and jointed to the block, and thev latter being jointed to the posts, 'and sliding in-and out of the parts E.
The said parts h have notches in one side, and the parts E are provided with the spring catches G, for engaging the notches oF and holding the back B high or low, according to the adjust-mentl of the said parts.

In connection with the above I propose tor apply springs, I, to the bottom of the back, as shown, or in any other equivalent way, to assist in raising the back.
Having thus vdescribed my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. rlhe self-raising spring back I B, hinged to the seat, and applied to the arms E F, as and-for the purpose described. l
2. The push-pieces H, 4combined with the4 spring catches G, hollow jointed part E, and sliding notched part F, as and for the purpose'described.
