Description

5mm/w@ @M555 Uff/k u FETERs, PHDTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHNGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
ALBERT GERDES AND J ULIUS REICHE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED BARBERS'CHAIR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 82,704, dated October 6, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT GERDEs and J ULIUs REICE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and 11nproved Reversible Barbers Chair; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to a new and useful improvement in barbers7 chairs, which are so constructed that by a single movement the seat, back, and head-rest may be reversed simultaneously.
The object in reversing the seat, back, and head-rest is for the purpose ot' giving each new-comer a cool seat, and by thus reversing the parts it will prevent dust and dirt from collecting around the edges as well as airing the parts at the same time, the construction and operation of which will be clearly understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, Sheet I, represents a sectional side elevation taken in the plane a: Fig. 2, Sheet II, is a plan of the same7 parts being broken away to show the construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A in the accompanying drawings represents the frame of the seat of a chair, which is intended to be upholstered on both sides, as clearly shown in Fig. l, Sheet I, the frame of the back of the chair being upholstered in a similar manner.
The shaft C, on which the seat swings, runs square through the seat, and bears in suitable boxes provided for it at cl and e. This shaft is connected with the upright shaft f by 41n eans of bevel-wheels g and h, which are operated in either direction by means of thepinion-wheel h', which is kept out of gear by the spring t', which, at the same time, serves to keep its shaft j locked, as shown in Fig. 2, Sheet II.
k is a grooved collar, keyed to or made in one with shaft j.
To operate this chair, the knob m of the shaft j must be drawn outward far enough to allow the dog a to be free to turn. This will at the same time draw the pinion-wheel h in gear with the bevelwheel g. The levers p, which throw the bolts q, are operated by their ends being held in the grooved collar h. Thus it will be seen by simply drawing the knob m outward and turning it around it will reverse the seat, back, and head-rest simultaneously, the stem of the head-rest being contained in a split tube attached to the upper portion of the upright shaft f, with a loose taper ferrule, r, which serves to clamp and hold the headrest at any desired height.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent, is
l. A barbers chair whose seat, back, and head-rest are upholstered on both sides, the same being so connected by such mechanism that the said seat, back, and head-rest maybe reversed simultaneously in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The split tube and taper ferrule r, for the purpose of adjusting and holding the headrest, substantially as shown and described. y
The above specication of my invention signed by me this 3d day of August, 1868.
ALBERT GERDES. JULIUS REIOH.
