WILLIAM H. SCHAEFFER, OF TULPEHOCKEN, PENNSYLVANIA.
TRACE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 17, 1914.
Application filed June 17, 1913. Serial No. 774,186.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IVILLIAM H. SCHAEF- FER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulpehocken, in the county of Berks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trace- Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in trace holders, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which is exceedingly simple in construction, and one by means of which a trace can be quickly attached or released as the occasion may require.
\Vith this and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the device. Fig. 9. is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4% of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the whifiietree, to the end of which is secured a plate 2, said plate being provided upon its outer face with corrugations 3, the purpose of which will appear later.
Connected to the upper and lower surfaces of the whiiiietree 1 are arms &, the outer ends of which are connected by a vertical bar 5, said bar being greater in width than the arms 4, thereby producing shoulders 6.
The bar 5 is provided with a screw threaded opening 7 in which operates the thumb screw 8, the inner end of which bears against the plate 9, said plate having its upper and lower ends provided with spaced ears 10. The spaced ears 10 span thearms 4L, and are adapted to engage the shoulders when the plate 9 is resting against the bar 5.
The inner face of the plate 9 is formed with diagonally disposed corrugations 11, which coact with the corrugations 3 of the plate '2 to firmly grip the trace end 12.
From this construction it will be seen that when it is desired to attach a trace it is only necessary to place the end thereof between the plates 2 and 9, whereupon the thumb screw 8 is manipulated so as to force the plate 9 inwardly, thus firmly gripping the trace end. It is obvious that the operation is reversed to release the trace.
It will be noted that by providing a trace holder constructed in this manner the necessity of forming eyes in the traces is eliminated.
lVhat is claimed is A trace holder comprising a pair of arms adapted to be secured to the whiffietree, said arms having their outer ends connected by a vertical bar, a plate connected to the outer end of the whiflietree, a second plate having its upper and lower ends provided with spaced ears adapted to span said arms, said bar having a threaded opening formed therein, a thumb screw operable in said opening, said screw having its inner end bearing against the second named plate, and adapted when moved inwardly to force the second named plate toward the first named plate to clamp a trace therebetween.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
WVILLIAM H. SCHAEFFER.
