CLIP FOE WHIFFLETRBES.
No. 452,120. Patented May 12,1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN K. HENDRIOK AND MADDRA J. HEWLETT, OF SMITIILAND, KENTUCKY.
-'CL IP FOR WHIFFLETREES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,120, dated May 12. 1891.
Application filed December 10, 1890- Serial No. 374,202 (No model) To aZZ whom it may concern:-
Be it known that we,JOHN K. HENDRIOK and MADDRA J. HEWLETT, citizens of the United States, residing at Smithland, in the county of Livingston and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clips fol-Single and Double Trees; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apperiains to make and use the same.
Our invention has relation to clips for'single and double trees, and has as its objects the production of a clip which is simple, ef-
fective, durable, and economical, and which may be applied by an inexperienced person with only the aid of a wrench.
To these ends ourinvention consists in certain features of novelty to be hereinafter described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing our clip applied to a singletreeqfj Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the clip.
The clip is composed of two members, one a and another b, respectively provided with longitudinal strengthening-ribs a and b at their backs. The rear ends of the members a b are hinge or knuckle jointed bymeans of a rounded enlargement or bead c on member a, constituting a bearing portion, and a curved or semicircular lip d on 7 member 7), its inner face conforming to and the same fitting on the rounded enlargement or bead c. The inner faces 6 of the two members a b are curved or suitably conformated, so as to fit snuglyon the single or double tree, and are provided with teeth or projectionsf, adapted to diginto the wood and retain themembers. The front end of memberb is formed into a horn g, that extends forwardly and toward the other member, passing through an eye 7L, beveled at h around its opening and projecting from the front end of member a. The horn g is preferably reduced at its end and provided with screw-threads t' to receive a tap or nutj, the reduction of the end of the horn forming a shoulder 71;, adapted to be recived by the beveled side of the opening of the eye h. Z is a hook provided with an eye m, that fits over the horn, the hook being retained on the horn when it is passed through the eye It, and the nut j is screwed on the horn.
Among the advantages arising from our invention are the following:
First. The clip is so constructed that in case of breakage of the hook or a desire to use a lap -ring, clevis, or ordinary ring it may be removed by opening the clip and putting in another hook, clevis, lap-ring, or other ring, as desired, and where lap-rings are to be attached there is no necessity for opening or closing them, as the tap or nut on the horn of the clip may be removed in an instant and the lap-ring put into place without a momeuts delay.
Second. Our clip being in two pieces, be sides the hook and tap, can be molded out of inalleableiron, thus greatly reducing the. cost and preventing the breaking or cracking thereof from a hard blow or sudden jar, and the clip, hook, and tap may be numbered, thereby enabling a person to buy any part of it without buying the entire clip and hook combined.
Third. The clip may be used with either side on top of the single or double tree, and may also be used for the ends of breast-yokes.
Other advantages could also be mentioned.
The clip may be made any size desired, but will be manufactured in three classes, to wit: No. 1 for the ends of singletrees, No. 2 for the centers of singletrees and ends of doubletrees, and No. 3 for the centers of doubletrees.
hat we claim is 1. In a clip for single and double trees, the combination, with one member provided with a screw threaded horn at one end, of the other member provided with an eye at one end, through which said horn passes, a tap or nut screwed onto the horn, and means for hinging the other ends of the members together, sub stantially as set forth.
2. A clip for single and double trees, the same consisting of three parts only, to wit: one member provided with a screw-threaded shouldered horn at one end, another member provided with an eye at one end, through which said horn passes, said eye being beveled around its opening to receive the shoulder of the horn, a tap or nut screwed onto the horn, and means for hinging the other ends lip at the other end of the other of said 1110111- hers, and a tap or nut for screwing onto the horn, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof We ailix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN K. HENDRICK. MADDRA J. HEWLETI.
Witnesses:
R. P. MORRIS, C. C. GRASSHAM.
