Description

V M. G. HOFFMANN. COVER OPENER FOR RBGEPTAGLES.
APPLICATION FILED 23.21, 1913.

MorZZm 66 7m MORTON G. HOFFMANN, OF SIOUX FALLS, SOUTH DAKOTA COVER-OPENER FOR RECEPTACLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 3. 1914.
Application filed February 21, 1813. Serial No. 749,938.
To all whom it mag concern Be it known that I, MORTON G; Horr- MANX, a citizen of the llnited States, residing at Sioux Falls, in the county of Minnehaha and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover-Openers for Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full; clear. and exact description of the in vention, Such as will enable others skilled in the 'artto which it appertains to make and use the same. p
This invention comprehends improvements in cans of the friction cover type and relates more particularly to means whereby the covers thereof may be easily removed.
I The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of a cover opener, which shall be of extremely simple construction, cheap to manufacture, and which may be easily embodied in the construction of the common type of cover without materially alteri ng' the same.
It is always a very difficult matter to remore the friction cover of a common type of can or similar receptacle now in general use and this is usually accomplished by prying the same open with some'sort of tool.
lily invention aims to provide a lever which is pivoted to such a cover for engagement with the edge of the can, whereby the cover can be easily lifted and removed.
\Vith thbse and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a, top plan view'of a cancquipped with my improved cover opener,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragn'ientary sectional View taken on the'plane of hue 22 of Fig.
1, and, Fig. 3 is a sectional viewthrough the can, taken on a plane at right angles to the plane of Fig. 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals, l designates, generally, a common type of can having a laterally projecting flange 2 formed about the open end thereof, said flange being turned inwardly adjacent its edge, as indicated at 3. f
4 indicates a friction cover having the upstanding rim 5 which is formed with the outwardly projecting flange 6. As shown in Fig. 2, the rim 5 engages the portion 3 of the flange 2 and the flange Gengages the top of the flange 2.
In the preferred embodiment of my in-' wention. I form the rim 5 with a. circumferential slit adjacent the flange 6 and the ends of said slit are extended downwardly a,
short distance, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The metal inclosed by said slit ishentlatorally. as indicated at 7. thereby forming a slot 8 in the rim. The slot is rectangular in shape and the portion of the fla'ngeb which forms the outer wall thereof is arched as indicated at 9. An opening lever 10 is extended throiigh said slot and is secured therein by means of a suitable fastener 11. The fastener extends through the center of the arched portion 9 of the flange 6, through'an enlarged. opening 12 in the lever, and through the flange 7. The inner end of the fastener bent. as indicated at 13, into enthe lever turns about the edge of the can as a fulcrum and engages the portion 9 of the flange 6, whereby the cover is lifted. The
of friction cover can Which is now generally used.
It is to be understoodpthat while I have shown and described the preferred embodi- 80 gagement with the under side of said flange.
ment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited. to this exact construction, eoin-hination and. arrangement of parts, but may make such changes as will fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim 1s:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a can having a friction cover provided with an upstanding rim, said rim bent laterally to provide a flange and having a circumferential slot formed therein upon one side thereof, of a lever projecting through said slot and engaging said can at its outer terminal, said lever engaging said slot at a point intermediate its ends, means for securing said lever within said slot extending downwardly and inwardly'through said flange and secured to the rim and the inner terminal of said lever terminating at a point near and spaced from the center of said cover whereby the fing'crsrnay be inserted between said lever said cover.
2. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a ca'n having a friction cover provided with an upstanding rim, said rim bent laterally to provide a flange, said rim having a circumferential slot formed therein upon one side thereof, a lever extending through said slot and engaging the can transversely of said cover, an inwardly projecting flange formed adjacent the lower edge of said slot, and means for holding said lever within said slot extending through said first mentioned flange and the lever and engaging said last mentioned flange.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MORTON Gr. HOFFMANN.
