JACOB LEUKART AND VALTER V. OWEN, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNORS TO THE NEW COLUMBUS \VATCH COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
WATCH-MOVEMENT BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,534, dated January 7, 1896.
Application filed May 18, 1895. Serial No. 549,732. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JACOB LEUKART and XVALTER W. OWEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Columbus, inthe county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Display and Shipping Cases for WVatch-Movements, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to the im rovement of display and shipping boxes for watch-movements, and the objects of our invention are to provide an improved box or case of this class of superior construction and arrangement of parts; to so construct and arrange the same as to provide" for the proper support and retention. of a watch-movement Within the box; to prevent the marring or injurious marking of the watch-dial by the bearing of one of the case-sections thereon or by the rotation of one of said sections, and to produce other improvements the details of construction of which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects we accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which--- Figure 1 represents a face View of our improved box, showing a watch movement supported therein. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar side elevation with the lid-section removed. Fig. 4 is a central transverse section of our improved box, showing a portion of a watch-movement supported therein, said view being enlarged for the purpose of more clearly illustrating the invention, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the box with the lid-section removed.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
I11 carrying out our invention we employ a cylindrical cup or casing a, preferably formed of a suitable metal, the lower side of said section consisting of a glass disk, as indicated at a. The band or side wall of the box-section thus produced has formed therewith at desirable intervals upwardly-extending springcatch tongues Z), the latter being formed integral with said box wall or band and having additional length imparted thereto by the production of vertical parallel cuts 0 formed in said box-band. The upwardly-projecting portion ofleach of these spring-tongues is provided with an outward and thence inward and upwardbend to form a clamping-hook, asindicated at d. Between the tongues h and at a distance from the latter the upper edge of the box-section ais provided with inwardlyprojecting flanges e, the inner edges of the latter being curved in parallel alignment with the box-section top. Through the vertical wall of the box-section a and adjacent to the upper sides thereof is formed at a desirable i point a small opening f.
g represents the cover-section which, as shown in the drawings, is of a substantially cap shape, this wall or band being of such circumference as to be adapted to fit snugly over the wall or band of the section a. The upper side of the section g also consists of a glass disk. The downward movement of this cap or cover section is limited by contact of its lower edge with a circumferential shoulder or bead g formed at the base of the section a. The cover or cap section is provided in its side wall with an opening 72. which corresponds in size with the opening f of the section a and which is so located as to admit of its being made to register with said opening f by proper rotation of the lid-section.
In utilizing our invention, the watch-movement is inserted in the box-section a dial up- So ward until the projecting edge of the pil1arplate iof said movement bears on the inturned flanges e of the box. The cap or lid portion a is then placed in position over the wall of the box-section a, as indicated in the 8 5 drawings. This operation results in the inner wall-surface of the lid-section pressing the clamping extensions (:1 of the tongues 12 inward over the edge of the dial 70. By the spring action of the clamping projections of the 0 tongues b the watch-movement is held firmly in place against the supporting-flange c. It will be observed that the movement-supporting parts of our improved box are so arranged as to result in the suspension of the movement 5 between the glass end plates of the box-sections,thereby preventing any contact of either the upper or lower surface of the movement with said box-section. It will also be ob served that the movement is so supported within the box as to prevent the scraping or frictional contact of the dial-plate with either of the box-sections, thereby insuring said dial against injury.
In case it is desired to wind the watch contalned in the boX without removing the move- 5 ment from the latter, the lid-section may be rotated until the two openings h and fregister with each other and a key or other suitable winding device may then be inserted through said openings.
Having now fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. I11 a watch movement displaying box the combination with the boX section a, the latter I 5 having upwardly extending and inwardly turned spring tongues projecting at intervals therefrom, of a cap or cover section adapted to inclose said section a and impart an inward pressure on the clamping portions of said 20 tongues, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a watch movement display box the combination with the section (0 having the upwardly projecting and inwardly turned spring clamping tongues Z) and inturncd edge flanges 6 arranged between said tongues, of a cover section g adapted to engage with said section a and impart an inward pressure to said clamping tongues, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In awatch movement displaying box the combination with the section to having upwardly extending and outwardly and inwardly bent clamping tongues, inturncd edge flanges e and a wall openingf, of a cap or cover section 9 adapted to inclose the wall of said section a and an opening it in said section 9 adapted to be made to register with the opening f, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
