Description

rrnn snares CHARLES J. NASH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR, BY
MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO
WILLIAM H. MINER, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 3, 1914.
Application filed February 10, 1908. Serial No. 415,019.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARL'ss J. NASH, citizen of the United States. residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Draw-Bar Yokes and Draw- Bar-Yoke Connections for Draft-Rigging, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft, rigging .for railway ears, and more particularly to improvements in the-construction of the draw-bar and draw-bar yoke and draw-bar yoke connection. Its object is to provide an improved construction of draw-bar yoke and means for connecting the same o the draw-bar, and which, at the 'same time will enable the new construction of draw-bar yoke to be replaced by the old or ordinary construction of draw-bar yoke whenlnecessary for repairs.
The invention consists in a draw-bar fur nished on its upper and lower faces with recesses having curved or concave wedging or hook-shaped gibs or shoulders at their rear ends adapted to receive corrcspondiugly shaped circular bosses on the inner side of the upper andlower members of the yoke, thus giving the yoke a limited flexibility in respect to the draw bar, while atv the same time affording a very secure and strong attachment of the yoke to the draw ba against pulling strains, combined with upper and lower front abutment or filler blocks fitting in the recesses on the upper and lower sides of the draw bar and overlapping the flanges of the circular bosses on the upper and lower members ofthe draw bar yoke, and thus affording a very strong and secure attachment of the yoke to the draw bar againstbulfing strains. The inclined or wedging form of the nnderface of the curved gib or shoulder on the draw bar at the rear end of the recessth erein. in connection with the correspondingly shaped flange of the circular boss on the inner sides of the upper and lower members of the yoke, causes the yoke members to bug or clamp the draw bar and thus to increase the strength and security of the attachment of the yoke to the draw bar. The yoke is preferably made of malleable iron and provided with integral. transverse webs at its middle portion for engagement with the middle followers, these transverse webs also serving to strengthen the yoke and to prevent its upper and lower members from buckling under heavy blows or stra1ns. Int-the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of a draft. rigging draw-bar and yoke embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan View; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective V1W showing one of the front abutment or tiller blocks employed with the new or im-, proved construction of yokes. In the drawing A represents a draw-bar, B the improved yoke. and D, D the front abutment or filler blocks employed with the improved yoke.
The draw bar A is provided at its rear end on its upper and lower sides with recesses A to-receive the filler blocks D, D. These recesses A have, preferably, straight square shoulders (a at their front ends and circularly curved undercut or hook-shaped gibs or shoulders a at their rear ends, the
under faces a of which clined or wedging.
The draw bar yoke "B is preferably cast and of malleable iron and has its upper and lower members 6 and Z furnished on their inner sides at the front ends thereofwith integral circular bosses b having curved flanges. 5 adapted to fit the curved and undercut gibs or shoulders (1. of the draw bar A and snugly engage the same. The draw bar yoke 1-3 is also preferably fnished with integral transverse webs 71* at its mid dle portion for engagement with the two middle followers of the tandem spring draft rigging.
the trout abutment or tiller blocks i) which may be removed or replaced tit in the recesses A of the draw bar between the front, shoulders (4 thereof and the circular curved front face of the yoke bosses b and each has a square shoulder 1/ at the front end thereof to abut against the front shoulder (1 of the draw bar recess A and a circularly curved concave rear shoulder (Z to fit against the ,correspoiuling convex yoke boss 6 The concave shoulder Z has a concave undercut or shoulder with an inclined face (Z to overlap the flange b of the circular boss?) of the yoke. The front abutment or filler blocks D D in connection with the shoulder a of the draw bar and the curved bosses Z)" of the yoke, thus afford a strong, safe and secure connection between the draw bar and yoke in resisting bnlfing are preferably in swing laterally as required in passing around curves.
A rivet or bolt E passing through the connecting blocks D D and draw oar secures the connecting blocks D in place. The rivet 8: may be preferably also inserted centrally through the yoke bosses b and the draw bar, the draw bar having suitable holes a a to receive said rivets or bolts. The draw bar is also preferably provided with a further rivet hole a for use when the ordinary construction of yoke is employed, as occasion may require for repairs or other purposes.
I claim: 7 v
In combination: a draw bar provided with recesses on its upper and lower sides having eoncavely curved, rear shoulders, each shoulder being provided with a beveled undercut portion; a yoke having inwardly Projecting circular bosses at the front ends of the up per and lower members, snugly fitting said concavely curved shoulders, each of the bosses belng provided with a circular flange beveled to cobperate with the beveled. undercut portions of the draw bar shoulders; and
removable upper and lower front fillerblocks 1 I having concavely curved, rear shoulders snugly fitting the c rved end bosses of the yoke, each or the :3 ler block shoulders be 'ing provided with beveled, undercut portions corresponding-to the beveled flanges of the bosses, the beveled, undercut ortions of the draw. bar shoulders, and t .e filler block shoulders, and the beveled boss flanges, 'cooperating under culling and pulling strains to draw the ends of the upprrand lower yoke members inwardly, substantially as specified.
